What comes into your mind when you hear the word
response?

Anyone? (Student raised hand)

Ma’am, when I hear the word response it is the reaction to
Yes, Claire. a question or you experience.

Very Good! That’s a good answer.

Now let us first have a little background of the proponent

of Reader Response approach.

Reader-response theory is pioneered by Louise

Rosenblatt (1993), an American professor emeritus and
researcher. Rosenblatt (1982) describes reading as a
transaction and a two-way process with the involvement of
text and reader at a specific time under certain conditions.

Reader-Response Literary Approach

- Reader-Response Criticism is an approach to

literature that focuses on the reader, rather than the
work itself, by attempting to describe what goes on
in the reader's mind during the reading of the text.

+ =

- It recognizes that different people view works

differently and that people’s interpretations change
over time.

- Literature may be judged according to how the

reader perceives it instead of what the author
intends.

- The text itself has no meaning until it’s read by a

reader. The reader creates the meaning.

- Reader-response theory does support the idea that

all interpretations are correct.

- Readers must justify their reactions based on

evidence from the text.

Class, do you think reader’s understanding of a text may

change from time to time? Why?
(Student raised hand)
Yes, Jamie. A reader’s understanding of a text may change from time
to time due to his or her experiences and readers from
Very Good! different generations, culture and places.

Reader Response Criticism aims to:

➢ explain why you like or dislike the text;
➢ explain whether you agree or disagree with
the author;
➢ identify the text's purpose; and
➢ critique the text.

So, based on the definition and the aims of this approach.

What is the main goal of reader response approach?
(Student raised hand)
Yes, Angel.
Its goal is to read first the text, comprehend and analyze
every detail of the text and produce meaning based on our
Very well said Angel. comprehension and experiences.

there are more important things in life than money and
fame. To show that you should care for people no matter
what and take life as an opportunity to make the people
around you happy and to help make yourself happier
through the process.
