I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;
a) identify the stages of infection;
b) apply basic health habits to prevent disease contamination;
c) value the importance of disease prevention and control.

Direction: The students will identify the statement based on the definition provided.

1. It is used to protect yourself from the rain.


2. It is a part of the body that pumps blood through the body.
3. It is a part of the body that is one of the entry points of a virus and bacteria.
4. It is used to clean your body to remove germs, dirt, and impurities from surface.
5. The largest organ in the body and covers the body’s entire external surface.

Direction: Students will try to fill in the missing letters with the help of the pictures and definitions
that serves as clue until they come up with the correct answer.

This stage includes the time between exposure to an infectious disease and the start of symptoms.

A. When a person is sick, the first stage of infection is incubation. It is the period starting from the
entry of the pathogen until the appearance of the first sign. For example: chicken pox, it takes 2-3
weeks of incubation. For common cold, 1-2 days of incubation, influenza takes 1-3, days and 15-18
days for mumps.

This stage starts from the onset of nonspecific signs and symptoms such as fever.

B. The second stage is called the prodromal stage which starts from the onset of nonspecific
signs and symptoms such as fever.

During this stage, the infection reaches its peak. Symptoms are typically more severe and specific
to the infection.

C. Illness stage begins when more specific signs and symptoms appear. For example, common
cold is characterized by sore throat, sinus congestion, rhinitis, mumps manifested by earache, high
fever, and salivary gland swelling.

This stage is when the body starts to heal, and symptoms gradually subside.

D. The last stage of infection is an interval when acute symptoms of infection disappear. The
length of recovery depends on the severity of infection and the sick person's general state of
health. Recovery may take several days to months and is called the convalescence stage.

When a sick person acquires an infection, he or she must observe signs and symptoms of
infection, and take an appropriate action to prevent the spread like staying away from the people
and taking the doctor’s advice seriously.

The teacher will ask the following questions:

1. What are the stages of infection?


2. How will you apply the basic health habits in daily life to prevent the disease contamination.
3. Why you need to know the importance of the disease prevention and control?

Direction: Identify situations if it is incubation stage, prodromal stage, illness stage or


convalescence stage. Fill the answer on the designated space.
