Technique is the manner in which artists use and manipulate materials to achieve
the desired form effect, and communicate the desired concept or meaning according
to his or her personal style (modern, neoclassic, etc.). The distinctive character or
nature of the medium determines the technique. See for example above:
Technique involves tools and technology, ranging
from the most traditional (For example: carving, silkscreen,
analog photography, and filmmaking) to the most
contemporary (digital photography, digital filmmaking,
music production, industrial design, and robotics).
Traditional Techniques
Wood Carving
Wood Carving is an art that has been practiced all
over the world but very avidly in Southeast Asia
where great pieces of woodwork have been
crafted throughout the ages. Siem Reap was a
center of arts for many years during the Angkor
Empire, with sculptures of Apsara, Angkor tales
and other stories regularly adorning the royal
compounds. Today, these very same sculptures
are made by craftsmen and placed in hotels all
over Siem Reap.
Traditional Techniques
Silk-screen printing Is one of the most popular printing techniques,
and is most-used by companies when printing design onto
products of different sizes and materials. It has been use for more
than 100 years in the commercial and artistic sector and is mainly
used for printing images and designs on T-shirts, and other
materials. Tote bags,. paper, wood, ceramics and other materials.
Analogue Photography
Filmmaking
Film production is the process of making a film. The direction or
production of films for the cinema or television. It is a visual
story telling. Film making involves a number of discrete stages
including an initial story, idea, or commission, through
screenwriting, casting, shooting, sound recording and
reproduction, editing, and screening the finished product before
an audience that may result in a film release and exhibition.
5 Stages of Filmmaking
1st, Development - the first stage in which the ideas for the film are created, rights to books/plays are bought
etc., and the screenplay is written. Financing for the project has to be sought and green lit.
2nd. Pre-production - Preparation are made for the shoot, in which cast and film crew are hired, locations are
selected and sets are built.
3rd, Production - The raw elements for the film are recorded during the film shoot.
4th, Post production- The images, sound, and visual effects of the recorded film are edited.
5th, Distribution- The finished film is distributed and screened in cinemas and released to home video.
Filmmaker is the one who takes the onus of a feature film from beginning to end, and most commonlv fulfills
the dual role of producer and director (or more).
Contemporary Techniques
Digital photography
These are the important components of form through actual and hands-on activities. Medium
and techniques involves all our senses (sensing), which enable us to understand or make sense of
a work of art;
Medium and techniques are not neutral or accidental but are part of the meaning of the work.
They also determine, to a very large extent, the ways in which we experience and respond to the
artwork. In contemporary art, medium has become increasingly independent of conventions;
artist explore and invent new medium and techniques, thereby expanding the range of artistic
resources.
The choice of art materials is a vital part of the artist's
approach to his or her work and it is important to pick
the right kind of materials. As a new or budđing
student-artist, any artwork that you will be creating is
considered as contemporary art provided that it is an
original concept. It should be conceived by the artist
humor her self. Call it reproduction or personal
rendition, copying somebody else's work is short of
making some kind of artistic plagiarism. It's duplicating
an original artwork with or without insignificant
changes. In creating a unique and original
contemporary artwork, many artists rely on the
appropriate and adequate supply of art materials. Local
art materials are locally available materials from the
region, province, city or town. The availability and
accessibility of local art materials make them
convenient and easy to use in creating art. Local art
materials in combination with the tools and equipment
used to create art are referred to collectively as art

material, and brush is the tool, together they make art
media.
Local and Indigenous Art
Materials
It is important to distinguish the difference between indigenous art materials and
local art materials. Anything indigenous naturally comes from the place or
locality. It is not introduced to the place or imported from somewhere else.
Where as, anything local also comes from the place or locality but may or may
not be originally part of that place or locality. It could have been introduced to the
place or locality by colonists or settlers from other places. Indigenous art
materials are materials that are natural or inherent from the place or locality. It
has been there right from the start. All indigenous art materials are local materials
but not all local art materials are indigenous. Local art materials could be a mix of
indigenous art materials and introduced art materials.

Application of Traditional Techniques to
Contemporary Arts.
The table shows how traditional techniques are applied to contemporary arts. In these examples you will see
how the techniques are modified to create another artwork.
▪ Your Bedroom
▪ Living Room
▪ Kitchen/Dining area
▪ Front Yard
▪ Back Yard
1. Based on the list of available local art materials from your home (from Activity 2),
make a secondary list from these local art materials that you can readily and freely use
without any hassle or concerns from your family members.
2. Based on the secondary list of local art materials, what kind of artwork can you
create from those materials?
3. Give the steps you will take in creating your artwork concept (Create Step 1, Step 2,
Step 3 and so on).
ACTIVITY 4: Creating Mini Art Using
Local Art Materials
Searching and finding potential local art materials at home will be all
for naught if they are left where they are and stay unused. Finding time to
create a mini art using the materials you have found and listed will give you a
sense of fulfillment as you put the artist inside you at work. Try doing the
following steps:
