ABSTRACT

Aim of this presentation is to familiar ourself

with the mysterious period of Indian
Mathematics ever.

Here we shall discuss briefly about historical

Work of some Mathematician during ancient and
classical period.
INTRODUCTION

• India had glorious past in every walk of science. Ancient India was a
land of sages and seers as well as a land of scholars and scientists.
• However, contribution of ancient Indians to the field of mathematics
are not so well known.
• Mathematics took birth in India before 2000 BC i.e during Indus
valley civilization.
• SULVASUTRA period Starting roughly from 800-200 BC and
Astronomical and mathematical period from 400-1200 CE.
SIGNIFICANCE
“We owe a lot to the Indian, who taught us how to
count, without which no worthwhile scientific
discovery could have been made.”
~ Albert Einstein

Study of this topic reveals glorious past of Indian Mathematics And

get many idea for Research in this area.
Many mathematical work and significance will be known.
ACHIEVEMENT OF
ANCIENT INDIA IN
THE FIELD OF

MATHEMATICS
• Author of the earliest Sulba Sutra.
• The original founder of Pythagoras’s
Theorem.
• First Mathematician to compute the value
of mathematical Constant Pi(π).
• Found answers to the questions like
Circling the Square or vice-versa.
Baudhayana • Also calculated approximate value of √2.
(800-740 BC)
TH
PANINI(4 CENTURY BC)
• In “Ashtadhyayi",beautiful mathematical
concepts like modern days algebra has been
found.
• Known as world’s first Informatician.
PINGALA(300-200 BC)
• Well known for
“Chandahsutra”, earliest
known sanskrit treatise on
prosody.
• He gave basic ideas of Fibonacci
• Made a valuable contribution through his
“Aryabhatiya”.
• Approximation of Pi(π) which is an
irrational number, π≈3.1416.
• Place value system.
• Inventor of ZERO .
Aryabhata
(476-550 CE)
• Calculated circumference of Earth to
99.8% accuracy.
• Gave scientific explanation of solar and
lunar eclipses.
• His name , given to the India’s first
BRAHMAGUPTA(7th CENTURY)
• He was the first to use ZERO in a significant way.
•• Gave formula for area of a cyclic quadrilateral.
• Gave the rules to deal with the negative numbers.
• Contribeted much to solve equations involving zero.

BHASKARACHARYA (1114-1185
•CE)
In Siddhanta Shiromani He developed spherical
trigonometry.
• He was the first to find derivatives and calculus , and
introduce the concept of Infinity.
• In his another book Karna Kautoohala he already said
about forces like Gravity.
Some Other Mathematician during ancient and classical
period:

• MANAVA(750-650 BC)
• APASTAMBA( 600 BC)
• KATYAYANA(300 BC)
• BHARAT MUNI (300-200 BC)
• VARAHAMIHIRA(505-587 CE)
• SRIDHARACHARYA(Between 650-850 CE)
• MAHAVIRA( 9th Century)
CONCLUSION

Although they made virtually no contributions to theoretical

mathematics, their discovery of place value system,
invention of Zero, solution for quadratic equations, brilliant
knowledge of astrology change the world.
It helps to the development of new branches of
mathematics, astrology, engineering etc.It placed India as a
special field of knowledge to the world mathematics
