Theorems on Secants, Tangents,
and Segments of a Circle
About the Module
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the skills in proving secants, tangents and segments. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes your diverse vocabulary level as a student. The lessons are arranged
to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module is divided into four lessons, namely:

Lesson 1 – Theorems on Angles formed by Tangents and Secants of Circles
Lesson 2 – Theorems on Secant Segments, Tangent Segments, and External
Segments (Power Theorem)
Lesson 3 – Proving Theorems on Secants and Tangents
Lesson 4 – Solving Problems Involving Tangents and Secants of Circles.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. demonstrate understanding of key concepts of circles;
2. prove theorems on tangents and secants of a circle; and
3. solve problems involving tangents and secants of circles.

Lesson Theorems on Angles

Secants
What I Need to Know
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• solve angles formed from intersecting secants and tangents of a circle.

3
What’s In
Previously, you were able to identify and describe terms related to circles
and use these mathematical concepts to solve problems in real life. This week,
you will take a closer look at some theorems and use these theorems to solve
problems involving tangents and secants of a circle.

What’s New
Theorems

A theorem is a statement that can be demonstrated to be true by accepted

mathematical operations and arguments. In general, a theorem is an embodiment
of some general principle that makes it part of a larger theory. The process of showing
a theorem to be correct is called a proof.

The knowledge and the skills learned in the preceding module will help
you understand the relationships of tangent segments and secant segments. As

Lesson Proving Theorems on

3 Secants, Tangents, and
Wednesday
Segments

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• prove some theorems.

What’s In
Understanding theorems on secants, tangents and segments is key to
finding out if geometric relationships are true. In this lesson, you will be proving
geometric relationships involving tangents and secants. A good grasp of this learning
will help you make wiser decisions in real life.

What’s New
Proving Theorems
Euclid is famous for giving proofs, or logical arguments, for his
geometric statements. What is a “proof”? We may have heard that in mathematics,
statements are proved to be either true or false, beyond any shadow of a doubt.

https://www.math.uga.edu/sites/default/files/inline-files/10.pdf
A two-column proof is one common way to organize a proof in geometry. Two-
column proofs always have two columns: one for statements and one for reasons.
The best way to understand two-column proofs is to read through examples.
When writing your own two-column proof, keep these things in mind:
• Number each step.
• Start with the given information.
• Statements with the same reason can be combined into one step. It is up to
you.
• Draw a picture and mark it with the given information.
• You must have a reason for EVERY statement.

10
• The order of the statements in the proof is not always fixed, but make sure
the order makes logical sense.
• Reasons will be definitions, postulates, properties and previously proven
theorems. “Given” is only used as a reason if the information in the
statement column was given in the problem.
• Use symbols and abbreviations for words within proofs.
