1
CIRCLE
What I Need to Know
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. identify Inscribed angles and their intercepted arcs;
2. find the measure of an inscribed angle and its intercepted arc; and
3. find the measure of an inscribed angle given the measure of a central
angle intercepting the same arc.

What’s In

Refer to the figure at the right, find

̂ if ∠𝐵𝐴𝑋 = 400
m∠𝐵𝑂𝐶 and 𝑚𝐵𝐶

and ∠𝑋𝐴𝐶 = 300

How will you determine the measures
̂?
of ∠𝐵𝑂𝐶 and 𝐵𝐶

What’s New
Refer to the figure at the left, the triangle inside
the circle is equilateral.

Are the angles in the triangle congruent?

What is the measure of each angle?

What is the measure of the arc intercepted by

each angle?
Fig. 1
∠𝐶𝐵𝐷, ∠𝐶𝐷𝐵 and ∠𝐵𝐶𝐷 are inscribed angles.

What is an inscribed angle?

What Is It
Definition of Inscribed Angle
An inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex lies on the
circle and whose sides contain chords of the circle.

5
The intercepted arc is the arc that lies in the interior of
an inscribed angle and has endpoints on the angle.

Example 1 Identify the inscribed angles and the arc intercepted by each.

Solution:
Inscribed angles
̂
∠ 𝐶𝐴𝐵 and ∠ 𝐶𝐵𝐷 intercept 𝐶𝐷
̂
∠ 𝐴𝐶𝐵 and ∠ 𝐴𝐷𝐵 intercept 𝐴𝐵

Inscribed Angle Theorem

The measure of an inscribed angle equals
one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.
1
𝑚∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = ̂
𝑚𝐴𝐶
2
or the measure of the intercepted arc is
twice the measure of the inscribed angle.
m ̂ = 2 𝑚∠𝐴𝐵𝐶
𝐴𝐶

Example 2 What is the measure of ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 ?

Solution:
1
𝑚 ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 = ̂
𝐴𝐵
2
1
𝑚 ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 = (1240 )
2
𝑚 ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 = 620
Example 3 ̂ ?
What is the measure of 𝑋𝑌

Solution:
̂ = 2 𝑚 ∠ 𝑋𝑍𝑌
𝑚 𝑋𝑌
̂ = 2 (700 )
𝑚 𝑋𝑌
̂ = 1400
𝑚 𝑋𝑌

6
Example 4 Find the measures of angles CBD, BCD and BDC and
measures of arcs CB, CD, and BD.

Solution:

∆𝐶𝐵𝐷 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒.

The lengths of the sides are equal so therefore the measures
of the angles are also equal.

𝑚∠𝐶𝐵𝐷 = 𝑚∠𝐵𝐶𝐷 = 𝑚∠𝐵𝐷𝐶 = 600

measure of intercepted arc = 2 (measure of inscribed angle)
̂ = 2 𝑚∠𝐶𝐵𝐷
𝑚 𝐶𝐵
̂ = 2 ( 600 ) = 1200
𝑚 𝐶𝐵
̂ = 𝑚 𝐶𝐷
𝑚 𝐶𝐵 ̂ = 𝑚 𝐵𝐷 ̂ = 1200

Lesson PROVING STATEMENTS

2 RELATED TO INSCRIBED
ANGLES
What I Need to Know
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. determine the measure of an angle inscribed in a semicircle;
2. find the measures of the angles of an inscribed quadrilateral; and
3. determine the statement and reason in a two-column proof of a
theorem.

What’s In
LEARNING ANCHOR

1. Name two inscribed angles.

2. Name two central angles.
3. If 𝑚∠ 𝐶𝐷𝐵= 1100 , what is 𝑚 ∠𝐶𝐴𝐵?

What’s New
The following corollaries tell us how the measure of an inscribed angle
is related to the measure of the intercepted arc.
What are Corollaries?

In mathematics, a corollary is a theorem connected by a short proof

to an existing theorem.

Here are the different corollaries related to inscribed angles.

8
What Is It
Corollary 1 of the Inscribed Angle
An angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle.

In the figure at the right, ∠𝑄𝑃𝑅 is

̂ , a semicircle of ⨀ 𝑂.
inscribed in 𝑅𝑆𝑄
̂ is a semicircle whose degree
𝑅𝑆𝑄
measure is 1800 . Thus,
𝟏 𝟏
m∠𝑸𝑷𝑹 = ̂ =
m𝑹𝑺𝑸 (𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎 ) = 𝟗𝟎𝟎
𝟐 𝟐

Example 1
̂ = 1100 , find
In circle C, m 𝐴𝐵
̂ and m ∠DAB
m 𝐴𝐷
Solution:
∠DAB is inscribed in a semicircle, so
∠DAB is a right angle whose measure is 900 .
m ∠𝐃𝐀𝐁 𝟗𝟎𝟎 =
̂ = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎 − 𝟏𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟕𝟎𝟎
m 𝑨𝑫

Proof of Corollary 1

Given: In circle C, ∠𝐷𝐴𝐵 intercepts a semicircle BGD.

Prove: ∠DAB is a right angle.

STATEMENTS REASONS G
∠𝐷𝐴𝐵 intercepts a Given
semicircle BGD
̂ = 1800
m𝐵𝐺𝐷 The degree measure of a
semicircle is 180o.
1 The measure of an
̂
𝑚∠𝐷𝐴𝐵= 2 m𝐵𝐺𝐷
inscribed angle is one-
half the measure of the
intercepted arc
1 Substitution
𝑚∠𝐷𝐴𝐵= (180o) = 90o
2

∠𝐷𝐴𝐵 is a right angle. Definition of right angle.

9
Corollary 2 of the Inscribed Angle
Angles inscribed in the same arc are equal.

Inscribed angles AEB, ADB, and ACB intercept

the same arc AB, thus

m ∠𝐀𝐄𝐁 = 𝐦 ∠𝐀𝐃𝐁 = 𝐦 ∠𝐀𝐂𝐁 = 𝟑𝟎𝟎

∠𝐀𝐄𝐁 ≅ ∠𝐀𝐃𝐁 ≅ ∠𝐀𝐂𝐁

Example 2

In circle O, 𝑚∠𝑄𝑂𝑆 = 1000 , name

two congruent angles and give its degree measure.

∠𝑄𝑂𝑆 is a central angle and its intercepted arc is QS,

̂ = 1000
thus, m𝑄𝑆
Inscribed angles QPS and QTS intercept arc QS
therefore, 𝒎∠𝑸𝑷𝑺 = 𝒎∠𝑸𝑻𝑺 = 𝟓𝟎𝟎

∠𝑸𝑷𝑺 ≅ ∠𝑸𝑻𝑺

Corollary 3 Angles of an Inscribed Quadrilateral

If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then both pairs of
opposite angles are supplementary.

Quadrilateral ABCD is inscribed in circle E.

∠𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠𝐶 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 also

∠𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠𝐷 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑦. Thus,

𝒎∠𝑨 + ∠𝑪 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎
𝒎∠𝑩 + ∠𝑫 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎

Example 3

Quadrilateral ABCD is inscribed in circle E.

What is the measure of angle BCD?

Solution:
1
𝑚∠𝐵𝐴𝐷 = ̂+
(𝑚𝐵𝐶 ̂)
m𝐶𝐷
2
1
= 2
(1150 + 860 ) = 𝟏𝟎𝟎. 𝟓𝟎

𝑚∠𝐵𝐶𝐷 = 1800 − 100.50 = 79.50
