What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written to help you master the core concepts and
principles of Measurements and Calculations to simple task.

The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning

situations. The language used recognizes a diverse vocabulary levels of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course but the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the text book you
are now using.

This module comprises the lesson;

Lesson 1: Carry Out Measurements and Calculations on simple task in

Household Services

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. differentiate the two system of measurements – English and Metric;
2. identify basic ways on how to use these measurements on household
services; and
3. appreciate the use of measurement and calculation procedures in the
performance of simple tasks.

What’s In

Let’s take a look at the previous lessons we had on:

 Proper care and maintenance of cleaning tools and equipment

 Safety Precautions to be observed in handling tools or equipment

Now is the time to move on to our next lesson which is How to carry out
measurements and calculations in performing simple household services.
We all know that measurement is one of the most important and widely used
applications of mathematics. Children must understand the importance of
measurement and be familiar with their use in everyday life. Parents can help
children see the relevance of measurement in the real world by pointing out it’s
applications in real life situations. Example situations are: time management,
preparation of food, taking medicines, sizes of furniture/space/area, and etc.

What is It

Metric System of Measurement

The MetricSystemis a measurement that uses the meter, liter, and gram as base
units of length (distance), capacity (volume), and weight (mass) respectively. To
measure smaller or larger quantities, we use units derived from the metric units.
These includes the following:

Length: Millimeter (mm), Decimeter (dm), Centimeter (cm), Meter (m), and
Kilometer (km) are used to measure how long, wide or tall of an object by using
ruler, yardstick and meter stick.
Examples: measuring the thickness or length of debit card, length of cloth, piece of
wood for furniture making.

Weight: Gram (g) and Kilogram(kg) are used to measure how heavy an object,
using instruments such as portion and weighing scale.
Examples: measuring weight of fruits or, our own body weight.

Capacity: Milliliter (ml) and Liter (l) are used to measure how much quantity of
liquid an object can hold through the use of measuring cup, glass or gallon.
Examples: measuring the amount of juice in a juice can, or amount of water in a
water tank.

Time: Second is the base unit of time.

British System of Measurement

The BritishSystem is also known as the English system of measurement. Defined

as the measurement system used in many countries including the United States
using feet, pounds and seconds. These includes the following:

Length: Inch (in), Foot (ft.), Yard (yd). Example: A man being six feet tall.
Area: Acre (acre or ac). Example: The house sits on two acres of land.
Volume: Pint (pt.), Quart (q.), Gallon (gal.) Example: The ice cream comes in
pint.
Weight: Ounce(oz.), Pound (lb), Tons (ton) Example: Manny Pacquiao weighs
145 pound (lb)

2. 4 meter = _______ decimeter A) .4 B) .004 C) 40
3. 2 centimeters = _______millimeter A) 2 B) 20 C) 200
4. 7 gallons = _______quarts A) 28 B) .028 C) 280
5. 1500 gram = _______kilogram A) .15 B) 0.150 C) 1.5
6. 10 yard = _________ feet A) 3 B) 30 C)300
7. 5 kilograms __________grams A)50 B) 500 C) 5000

What I Have Learned

Activity 3: It’s Experiment Time!

Directions: Do the DIY furniture/surface polish in your home. Use the following
materials and follow the procedures listed below. You will be rated based on the
provided scoring rubric.
Materials Needed:Substitute:
 olive oil - coconut oil
 white vinegar - vinegar
 lemon juice - calamansi juice

Note: Substitution will do if the given materials are out of hand.

How it works: The olive oil/coconut oil nourishes and prevents the wood from
cracking, while the acid of vinegar cleans and lemon/calamansi adds citrus aroma.

Procedures: Combine ¼ cup or 8 tablespoons of each material/substitute needed.

Pour some onto a soft cloth. Spritzing the solution directly onto furniture can
discolor it. So you can spray or pour small amount in your cleaning cloth first and
apply it. Gently polish surfaces like table, chairs, cabinets and other items made of
wood.

Ask any adult family member to guide you and give you an honest score. Copy the
scoresheet in your notebook.

What I Can Do

Activity 4: I Beat Covid!

As we work together to combat the novel coronavirus that causes the pandemic
commonly known as COVID-19, it’s essential to know how to create and use
effective cleaning solutions. Cleaning and sanitizing regularly can help prevent the
flu, food borne illness, and more which in return can help decrease other infections
and can lessen the burden on our healthcare systems.
Directions: Do DIY Disinfectant Solution following the procedures given below,
with the guidance of an adult family member. Copy the score sheet in your
notebook for your evaluation.
You will need:
 1 teaspoon or 5 ml. of liquid bleach
 1 cup or 240 ml. of cool tap water
 gloves
 measuring devices including cup and teaspoon
 a container such as a bowl or a spray bottle
Procedures:
Step-1: Wear the gloves, then carefully measure the bleach and add it to the
water.
Step-2: With the gloves on, apply the solution to the hard surface, such as
doorknobs or non-porous countertop. Examples of non-porous surfaces
include glass, plastics, metals, and varnished wood.
Step-3: To properly disinfect, the solution needs to be in contact with the surface
for at least 5 minutes.
Step-4: Discard the solution by adding water and pouring it down the sink drain
after 24 hours as it can lose potency quickly.
