FOR CITING SOURCES

Prepared by: Mrs S. Byfield

WHAT IS MLA?
MLA is a widely used referencing style in the
humanities, particularly in literature, languages, and
cultural studies.
It provides guidelines for citing sources within your
paper and creating a Works Cited page to acknowledge
the sources you've used.
Formatting Basics
In MLA style, your paper should be double-spaced and use a legible font like Times
New Roman, size 12.
Include a header in the upper right corner with your last name and page number.
Title your paper using standard capitalization, centered at the top of the page.
In-Text Citations

In-text citations are used to acknowledge the source of information within

the body of your paper.
Use the author's last name and the page number in parentheses after the
borrowed information.
If the author's name is mentioned in the sentence, only include the page
number in parentheses.
If the there are multiple authors, use all their last names separated by
commas and end with the page number if available.
If the source is an online source and does not have a page number used the
authors name only in parentheses
Works Cited Page
The Works Cited page is a list of all the sources you've referenced in your paper.
Arrange entries alphabetically by the author's last name.
Include full bibliographic information for each source, following MLA formatting
guidelines.

medium of publication.

number, publication year, page range, and medium of publication.
