CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Confidence is a valuable trait as it can lead to improvements in one’s performance, better

decision-making, increased resilience, and is a great ability to possess. Confidence is the power

to not be frightened and control oneself. Self-confidence serves a significant role in learning and

performance. It is a predictor of academic success in order to improve students’ academic

performance, learning capacities, self-esteem and confidence. A student's motivation to learn is

increased when they have self-confidence. It plays a vital role for the students. However, Low

self-confidence can disperse their significant challenge to their personal growth as well as to

their academics. It gives them social pressure and struggles.

A lot of students struggle with low self-esteem. Every student who experiences it suffers

from it in many ways, including making progress in their academic achievement, speaking with

confidence, friendless, and other negative effects. Being anxious or lacking confidence can be

difficult to deal with on a daily basis when one lacks the courage to view other people as equals.

Lack of confidence is one of the hardest things to deal with in life, especially when one is

studying, and those who suffer from it occasionally end up choosing to trust other people instead

of submitting to their own abilities. Students who lack confidence encounter several challenges.

Be aware that one of the biggest challenges that students still encounter is their low self-esteem

and lack of confidence, which might hinder their learning. they may become sidetracked from

their studies.
A lot of students experience a lack of confidence or low self-esteem. Palavan (2017)

states that “students’ lack of self-confidence can cause students’ lack of motivation, which in

turn can cause education to become compulsory and make students show a negative attitude

towards learning.” Some students would rather stay silent than face something that they think

will just humiliate them; for example, most students who lack confidence would not participate

in class, not because they do not know the answers but because they are insinuating that others

would make fun of or mock them. If ever they get the answers wrong, fear gets over them.

This study aims to look at the situation of Grade 11 Students; how to deal with those who

experience a lack of confidence during school, to bring some ideas from researchers who are

interested in knowing the main reason why students often experience this feeling. In analyzing

and recognizing the main causes and improving the target solutions, parents and teachers can

help the students develop trust in their abilities and improve self-esteem. By conducting this

study, researchers can implement a better environment for the students so that they will not

hesitate to engaged in their academics and excel in performances.
