Crop Integration Report for Gulayan sa Paaralan

Reporting Period: September 2023-February 2024

Objective: To optimize crop integration within the school garden to maximize yield,
biodiversity, and sustainability.

Key Integration Strategies:

1. Companion Planting: By strategically planting compatible crops together, we aim

to enhance growth, repel pests, and improve overall garden health.
2. Succession Planting: Implementing successive plantings ensures a continuous
harvest throughout the growing season and maximizes space utilization.
3. Crop Rotation: Rotating crops in different garden beds helps prevent soil
depletion, reduces pest and disease pressure, and promotes balanced nutrient
uptake.
4. Vertical Gardening: Utilizing vertical space for crops like upo, beans, and squash
optimizes space usage and increases overall productivity.

Crop Integration Highlights:

1. Tomato-Basil Companion Planting: Planted basil alongside tomatoes to enhance

flavor and repel pests. This integration has been successful, with both crops
thriving and minimal pest damage observed.
2. Lettuce and Radish Succession Planting: Following each lettuce harvest,
radishes were planted in the same beds. This approach maximized bed usage and
provided a continuous supply of salad ingredients.
3. Bean-Corn-Squash Three Sisters Planting: Utilized the traditional Native
American planting technique of intercropping beans, corn, and squash. This
symbiotic relationship improves soil fertility, minimizes weeds, and maximizes
yield per area.
4. Herb Spiral Vertical Gardening: Constructed an herb spiral to grow a variety of
herbs vertically. This innovative design optimizes space, provides different
microclimates for various herbs, and adds visual interest to the garden.

Future Integration Plans:

1. Explore additional companion planting combinations to further enhance pest

control and plant health.
2. Experiment with more diverse crop rotations to improve soil structure and fertility.
3. Expand vertical gardening initiatives to include more climbing crops and creative
vertical structures.
4. Collaborate with students to design and implement integrated planting schemes
as part of their gardening curriculum.
