Cosy Afghans

Miscellaneous Remarks

Before we start with our Cosy Afghans Crochet ALong we would like to point out
that we are two non-professionals who have created this pattern, totally free,
for you with great pleasure. We did our very best to create a beautiful and
varied pattern!

The name Cool ‘n Cosy is chosen for it’s cool, but yet tough look. Besides that, it
is a very soft afghan. Sweet ‘n Cosy is a very sweet, soft and cuddly afghan.
Because of their sizes these afghans are ideal to use whenever and wherever
you want: on your couch during cool evenings or as baby blanket, for example.

We would like you to

read this PDF-file with
great attention. It
could clarify a lot and
could answer the
questions you may have
about the Cosy Afghans
Crochet ALong
beforehand.

READ CAREFULLY, this is very important!!
Reading your pattern with great attention
saves you from making half the mistakes.

Note: Begin reading the instructions from

start to finish. Then, step by step, read the
instructions again whilst crocheting at the
same time. If possible, let someone else read
Cosy Afghans

out the instructions to you, when you’re having

troubles understanding the text. To make
things even clearer, we’ve added diagrams and
we’ve made a video of each of the squares.

When making this CAL we use “stitch markers”. We use them to indicate the
right side of the square and place them in row 1 and later on in the corners so
we can use them when joining the squares in the last part of this CAL.

If you join this Cosy Afghans Crochet ALong we assume you know how to crochet
the basic crochet stitches and you know how to turn.

These afghans are made with squares, using front post- and back post stitches.
A sampler, you could say, with a variety of patterns.

We’ve made these squares with different sizes crochet needles.

We’ve used sizes G, H, I and 7 (4, 4,5, 5 and 5,5 mm.). Using these different
sizes is necessary to reach the right size for every pattern, with the same
amount of stitches.
It is perfectly fine to use a smaller or larger needle when you think
this is necessary to reach the right size.

Every pattern has a different number of rows. This is due to the used stitches.
One time we make double crochets and another time a pattern contains single
crochets, mostly it is a combination of different stitches.

To make it easy to join the squares, in part 8, we make a row of single crochets
around each square. We crochet 30 single crochets along each side. On top and
bottom this is easy, just use the stitches that are there. Along the left and
right side, you have to divide those stitches evenly.
Cosy Afghans

Our squares measures about 8”. A small difference will not be visible after
joining. Of course, you can block your squares to one size.
It can appear, by crocheting loosely or tightly, your squares end up having a
different size. Make sure all your squares are the same size.

We recommend to weave in the ends of

your threads after every week. That
way you don’t have to weave in a lot of
ends at the end of the project. Doing it
every week, will only take a few minutes.

We weave in our ends with a needle and “weave” between the stitches, up and
down. This way the ends will not “peep out”.

Almost every row, parts of the pattern have to be repeated. This is

indicated with a * (repeat from * until the end of the row). Sometimes you have
to read very well to make sure you know exactly which part you need to repeat.

We’ll be turning our work after every row. We’ll be crocheting on the right side
and on the wrong side. To be on the safe side, every row number on the right
side is colored in red.

We’re using 5 colors, you are free to use as many

colors as you wish.
The finished size of our afghans is approx. 160 cm x
115 cm (63” x 45”).

Now let’s move on to our yarn, which can be the most

pleasant or hardest thing ;).
Which yarn do you prefer, which one works for you?

We’ve used for our Cosy Afghans Crochet ALong

2017, Durable Cosy fine, 105 meters per ball. This is
a mixed yarn, 58% cotton, 42% polyacryl.

This brings us to the important question: How much yarn do you need?

For our Cool ’n Cosy we’ve used the following colors: white (color 310), vintage
green (color 2134), mint (color 2137), teal (color 2142) and baby blue (color
2124).
For our Sweet ’n Cosy we’ve used: white (color 310), light pink (color 203), linnen
(color 2212), deep fuchsia (color 238) and flamingo pink (color 229).
We’ve used 7 balls for each color.

In total, we’ve used about 3700 meters.

For both color combinations, there will be packages available as from September
and you can pre-order in August in Dutch stores.

Of course, you can choose your own colors, after

all it will become your own afghan.

The finished size of your afghan is depending on

the kind of yarn you’re going to use, the size of
Cosy Afghans

your crochet needle and whether you crochet loose

or tight.
If you want to make your afghan smaller or bigger,
just make less or more squares. We’ve made 35
squares.

Are you going to use a different yarn? Please be aware the size of your squares
can be different and maybe you have to make more or less squares to reach the
same size we did. Of course, you can make bigger squares by using more
stitches. You will have to adjust the scs on the sides as well.

When using another stitch amount, please make a note, so you always know what
your stitch amount is.

Every row starts with a so called “side
stitch”. At the beginning of a row you
can make turning chains (1, 2 or 3,
depending on the kind of stitch). At
the end of this row you crochet a
stitch which is the same height as the
used stitches. Notice that front post
double crochets and back post double
Cosy Afghans

crochets are shorter than a regular

double crochet. Therefore, you can end
a row with a half double crochet, for
example to avoid the sides are higher
than the middle of your squares.

Some of the patterns don’t really have

a right or wrong side. It doesn’t matter if you end with an even or odd row, as
long as each square of that pattern is the same size. Some of the patterns do
have a right or wrong side. Pay attention to make the final sc row is made at the
right side. You can mark your first row with a stitch marker, that way you always
know which side is the right side and what is the bottom of the square. This also
helps you when we’re going to join the squares.

We are going to make our afghans in 8 parts. Every fortnight we will post a part,
starting September 15th 2017 and the last part will be published at December
22nd 2017.

Do you have any questions about the pattern?

First read through the responses in the Facebookgroup “Haakplein” because you
might find your answer there. If you don’t, you can always ask your
question/problem in the group, in the post made for that part.
Helping each other is also part of Crochet ALong.
