JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

How can this be?!

LESSON 1: THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE
RELIGION OF ISRAEL
Learning intention: To understand that the new religion God
commanded Moses to institute had the basic characteristics
of all religions
THE NEW RELIGION THAT
GOD COMMANDED MOSES
TO INSTITUTE HAD THE
BASIC CHARACTERISTICS
OF ALL RELIGIONS
In the journey of God’s Chosen People through Sinai, God
gave instructions to Moses about the establishment of a new
religion. God gave the Jewish religion all the characteristics of
a major religion.
The origins of the Jewish religion begin with God calling
Abraham. Its most basic experiences of God were those
received through Abraham, the twelve Patriarchs, Moses, the
Passover and the Sinai Covenant.
The Jews received further experiences of God over the next
twelve hundred years and the Jewish faith developed from
these experiences.
The origins of the Jewish religion begin with God calling
Abraham.

Look at the information about Moses at the link above. Just read the first paragraph. “As the
interpreter of these Covenant stipulations, he was the organizer of the community’s religious
and civil traditions.” This means that Moses established the basic characteristics of all
religions!

LESSON 2: THE PROPHETS

Learning intentions:
1. Define “prophets”
2. Describe the role of the prophets (including their personal
characteristics)
3. Explain the impact the prophets had in their community
DEFINITIONS

A prophet is a messenger sent by God, a person who speaks for God.

He or she witnesses to God (by their life)
He or she calls people to conversion (to change their sinful ways)
They may also foretell the future (usually how things will turn out badly if they do not change their ways)

Prophets often are killed for their message. This especially evident when they openly pronounce the sins being
committed and call on people to change their sinful ways and repent.
Some well-known prophets in the Old Testament are: Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Micah.
ROLE OF A PROPHET
Prophets were people called by God to proclaim the word or teaching of God and to speak in God's name to others.
The prophets acted out of their deep commitment to God.
They spoke out when they saw that people were not living as God wanted.
It was often difficult to be a prophet who was like a conscience for society, challenging the way people lived and the injustices
they saw around them.
Their work also involved criticising and calling others to work to change what was bad or evil in their society, challenging
 is contrary to God's law
whatever in society

They were continually strengthened by God as long as they continued to fulfil God's mission.
A Prophet hence stands between God and man. In the case of the prophet, he delivers the Word of God from the top down -
from God to humanity (remember a priest is a mediator from bottom up - from humanity to God)
•In this way a prophet is also a mediator between God and humanity.

TASK:
Choose 5 of the Old Testament
messianic prophecies in the table.

fulfilment and make notes about
how Jesus appears.
HOW JESUS FULFILLED THE PROPHECIES
The Messiah will be born in Bethlehem Ephrathah- In Luke 2:1-7 the prophecy the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem
Ephrathah. Was fulfilled when the bible says “ Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of
David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.” And the quote “He went to be
registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her
to deliver her child.” These quotes tell use that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, therefore fulfilling the prophecy that the messiah
will be born in Bethlehem.
The Messiah will be born of a virgin- In Luke 1:26-38 the prophecy the messiah will be born of a virgin was fulfilled when
the bible says “The virgin’s name was Mary” and the sentence “now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you
will name him Jesus.” These two quotes tell us that mary was a virgin and that she will be the mother of Jesus( the messiah),
therefore fulfilling the prophecy that the messiah will be born of a virgin.
HOW JESUS FULFILLED THE PROPHECIES
The Messiah will come to Jerusalem to bring salvation somewhere between AD 26-33- k
