Scope and Delimitation

of the Study

CHRISTIAN DAVE A. BALASA

Scope and Delimitation of the Study
In formulating the “scope and delimitation,” it
is essential that the researcher has already
defined the major variables of the. Study which
are contained in the title of the research and the
general statement of the problem. An example of
a major variable is the level of behavior of
freshman students.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
Scope
The scope of the study is determined by the
major variables of the study while sub-variables
and their characteristics, attributes, or indicators
serve as the delimitation. It is also beneficial to
mention the locale or setting of the research and
when the data will be gathered.

Delimitation

Delimitation pertains to the boundaries of the

study with respect to the major variable/s, and is
further clarified by the sub-variables. Each delimitation
must also be further defined by its indicators.

Example
SCOPE (Major variable/s) - level of behavior

DELIMITATION (Sub-variables) — facial

expressions during recitation, communication, skills,
body gestures.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
Indicators for Facial Expressions
a. The students smile when answering the question.
b. The students manifest confidence in their facial
expressions.
c. Mannerisms are noted in the faces of the students.
d. Different expressions are noted from the students.
e. Students seem to look surprised when asked about some
concepts.

Example
The study was conducted to determine the strategic plans of hotels and
inns in the new normal. The study does not include factors affecting the hotels
and inns to stay afloat during the pandemic. This present study employed
descriptive research design and utilized 16 purposively selected hotels and
inns in Roxas City and Iloilo City. To collect the necessary data, a researcher-
made questionnaire was used. The data was analysed using descriptive and
inferential statistics. This research was carried out during the second
semester of the academic year 2020-2021. (Bandellon, R. A. F., et. al.
Strategic Plans of Hotels and Inns in the New Normal, 2021)

Example
This study sought to discuss the mathematical reasoning skills and
conceptual understanding in selected topics in Pre-Calculus of Grade 11
STEM students for the school year 2020-2021. This descriptive-
correlational study was limited to the Grade 11 STEM students of Hercor
College High School Department. The selected students were chosen
through random sampling as the participants of the study. Corresponding
and inferential statistics were used to analyse the gathered data. (Alegre,
D. P. V. et. al, Mathematical Reasoning Skills and Conceptual
Understanding of Grade 11 STEM Students, 2021)

Example
The respondents in this research were the people who used barter as their medium of
exchange, “barterers”, from one single location-Pontevedra, Capiz, specifically the randomly
selected Coastal Areas of Malic and Isagani. The researchers chose Pontevedra, Capiz because
of the socio-economic condition present in the area that was related and relevant to the study and
also as it did fit to the time frame and resources of the researchers. The randomly selected
respondents were asked by the researchers for consent and approval to answer the questionnaire
provided by the researchers and to collect data until the desired number of respondents which
was 50 were reached. This study was focused on the bartering management practices which was
the rendered habits of barterers, goods that were being bartered and problems encountered by
the barterers in the selected coastal areas of Pontevedra, Capiz to maintain the goods medium of
exchange. This study was conducted for the Academic Year 2019-2020. (Bulquerin, E. K. B. et.
al., Bartering Management Rendered by the Barterers in the Selected Coastal Areas of
Pontevedra, Capiz, 2020)
