Integrated Water Resources
Integrated Water Resources
TANZANIA.
ABSTRACT
The increased demands for fresh and clean water due to population growth, rapid urbanization,
economic growth, climate change and variability, and poor management of the resource has
reportedly have been accelerated from year to year (Ministry of Water 2020). It has been estimated
that 12% of deaths in Tanzania are related to inadequate clean safe water, sanitation and hygiene,
and numerous water bodies are polluted (Guerra & Ledesma 2015). The challenge is that integrated
water resource management should cope with complex cross cutting issues, community
involvement on water supply projects in order to maximize the resultant economic and social
welfare in an equitable manner, without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystem. Even
though the government has adopted water policy of 2002 and act of 2009, the implementation of
IWRM may face the technical and managerial challenges. This paper briefly reviews the
implementation of IWRM and related principles and provide an overview of potential related
issues and progress towards implementation of IWRM. The needs for review of water policy were
identified. The recommended actions for improving the future IWRM are suggested. Challenges
to improve the capacity buildings of IWRM related to enabling environment, institution
frameworks and management instruments are verified to contribute to the future directions for
efficient problem solving ability.
