Enhancing Youth AI Skills to Leverage Community-based Interventions

Project Brief:

The goal of the “Develop youth’s Artificial Intelligence skills and awareness to leverage
community-based interventions focused on the advancement of gender equality and equity to
combat social, economic, and political problems faced by the engaged youth in their local
communities” project is to foster innovation, inclusive governance, and civic engagement
among 20 Palestinian youth (ages 18-30) in the northern West Bank.
In collaboration with Hassib Al Sabbagh Incubator and AI specialist consultant Dr. Mona Al
Demaidi, Shiam implemented the 3-days bootcamp that focuses on developing their AI
technology skills and utilizing community-based interventions to address issues of gender
equality and equity in an ethical and safe manner to 5 participating youth teams. The training
covered concepts, theories, techniques, practical implementation, as well as ethics and bias
associated with using AI. Through the 3-day friendly competition, the youth teams fostered
innovation and entrepreneurial skills to initiate AI-powered ventures that offer unconventional
solutions to socio-economic challenges, including employability, geo-political isolation, and
gender equity in their local communities.
Following the AI challenge, three teams were incubated in Hassib Al Sabbagh Incubator in the
American University of Jenin to further help the teams develop their AI ideas into prototypes.
