Rhinos are a keystone species— they have a disporportionately large effect on their ecosytem.
The extinction of rhinos would mean the loss of millions of years of evolutionary history, and unique genetic diversity that
science has yet to fully understand and bene t from. 1

The low rhino population speci cally
impacts the community around
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Many members of this community gain
their livelihood from wildlife preservation.
Tourists visiting rhinos also fund many
local schools.
If the rhinos are gone, fewer tourists will
come, and the community will suffer.

McKinsey Problem Solving Framework
• What is the problem? The Rhino Population in Kenya is very small.
• Who is a ected? Many other species of wildlife, communities that depend on income from
tourists, the world at large (that could bene t from genetic diversity and the beauty of these
animals.)
• What will make a solution successful? If the rhino population in Kenya reaches 10,000.
• What are the boundaries of this problem? Only within Kenya, no species other than rhinos.
• Who or what can stop you from implementing the solution? This is a complex problem and
the without adequate funding and the cooperation of many di erent people, it will not be
solved.

Proposed
Solution #1
By the end of 2024, pass a new
law in Kenya that that prevents
all current rhino habitats from
being developed or used for
agriculture.
Acceptance Criteria:
Users should have a working map where any
specific rhino’s location can be clearly
requested and seen.
10
To see if the solution #1 was working,I would measure the
following:
All rhino deaths and rhino births each year. I would measure this
by collecting the data gathering by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Rhinos are unique and beautiful animals who play a
critical role in maintaining ecosystems. They also attract
tourists, who provide an important source of income for
many communites.
Female white rhinos are able to start producing offspring when they are
about 6 years old. A female rhino can give birth to one calf about once
every 2-3 years.
They gradually decline in fertility until they stop at about age 30, but
many die before reaching this age.
