1. Which of the methods is more convenient and accurate? Show computation (taking into account the
percentage of error)

a. Rectangular Contracted Weir

b. V-notch Weir
Based on the results the V-notch Weir is more convenient and accurate based on the
computation and results of their respective percentage of error.

2. Enumerate the specifications of a standard weir.

• Height (H): The vertical distance between the crest of the weir and the water level upstream.

• Length (L): The width of the weir perpendicular to the flow direction.

• Crest Shape: Weirs can have various crest shapes (V-notch, rectangular, triangular, etc.). The crest
shape affects the discharge coefficient.

• Discharge Coefficient (C): This coefficient is dependent on the type of weir and its specific geometry.
It's a dimensionless factor used in the discharge formula to relate flow rate to the head of water.

• Type of Weir: There are different types such as rectangular weirs, V-notch weirs, trapezoidal weirs,
etc., each with its own formula for discharge calculation.

• Material and Construction: Weirs can be made of various materials like concrete, metal, or even
natural materials, and their construction should be robust to withstand water flow and environmental
conditions.

• Flow Rate Measurement: Weirs are used to measure flow rates in open channels or streams. Their
specifications should allow for accurate measurement and recording of water flow.

• Location and Installation: Weirs need to be installed properly in a channel or flume, ensuring that
the flow of water is unobstructed and that measurements are taken accurately.

• Regulatory Compliance: Standard weirs often have specifications set by regulatory bodies or
engineering standards to ensure accurate and reliable flow measurement in various applications
like water management, irrigation, environmental monitoring, etc.

• Maintenance Requirements: Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to ensure that the
weir remains in proper condition for accurate flow measurements.

3. A test measurement of flow over a standard weir 300mm high in a flume 0.609 m wide at a head of 0.158
m showed a total volume of 26.28 m3 of water discharge in 362.3 sec. the water temperature was 42°.
Assuming the measurement of flow to be correct compute the percentage of error in the discharge
computed by the weir formula. (Rectangular-Sharp Crested)
