Cacao, A Sweet but Good Treat

The journey of cacao in the Philippines began in San Jose, Batangas, where the country
pioneered cocoa bean cultivation in the late 1600s. Over the years, commercial cocoa farms and
processing facilities sprouted, turning cocoa into a lucrative commodity by the 1950s. In 1980,
the government's strategic tax incentives spurred a cocoa renaissance, with Mindanao emerging
as a prime region for cultivation, blessed with the perfect blend of land and climate.

Fast forward to 2023, and the Philippines proudly produced 9,341 metric tons of cacao beans,
according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. The Davao region claimed the crown as the top
producer, contributing 7,258 metric tons, followed by Central Luzon and Zamboanga Peninsula
with 338 metric tons and 329 metric tons, respectively.

Beyond being the source of our beloved chocolate, cacao is a nutritional powerhouse, boasting
a myriad of health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, minerals, and fiber, cacao has become a
delightful ally in promoting overall well-being.

 May Reduce Cancer Risk: Loaded with antioxidants such as epicatechin, catechin, and
procyanidins, cacao combats free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic
conditions, including cancer.

 Helps with Inflammation: The antioxidants in cacao also play a role in controlling
inflammation, safeguarding against diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

 Supports Heart Health: By releasing nitric oxide and promoting vasodilation, cacao aids
in blood flow, potentially reducing hypertension and the risk of heart disease.

 Helps Control Blood Sugar: Cacao flavanols promote insulin secretion, stabilizing blood
sugar levels and lowering the risk of diabetes.

 Enhances Cognitive Function: With a touch of caffeine and theobromine, cacao

stimulates the central nervous system, potentially improving cognitive function.

As the Philippines continues to bloom its cacao, the journey from historical roots to modern-day
health benefits is both fascinating and heartening. From the colonial introduction to a
flourishing industry, cacao has become a gift that keeps on giving — not just in delectable treats
but also in promoting a healthier, happier nation.
