LESSON 15—ELEMENTS OF POETRY

The persona is the one talking in the poem. The writer or the
SPEAKER
poet is not always the speaker in the poem.

ADDRESSEE The receiver of the message of the speaker in the poem.

The emotion expressed through the words and lines in the


TONE
poem.

Poems are normally written in stanza.


A stanza is a group of lines in a poem.
STRUCTURE/FORM
A line may contain only a word, a phrase, or one complete
sentence.

Rhyme- two or more words that have similar end sounds. In


poetry these words are found at the end of each line.

SOUND Rhythm- pattern of sound created when reading or reciting a


poem.

Sound Devices- onomatopoeia, alliteration, and assonance.

Expresses the poet’s ideas and emotions in a more vivid,


FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
concise, and imaginative manner.

Main topic or subject that is being talked about in a poem.


THEME The message the poet wants to convey to his/her readers
based on the theme.
