2. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

: Photoelectric reflex sensors detect all materials, problems may occur with
transparent objects or objects wrapped in shiny transparent film

: Standard application: pallet detection on roller conveyor

2. Principle of operation

New Employee Program 7

2. Principle of operation

Four kinds of reflection

Proximity sensors Retro-reflective sensors

Total reflection
Mirroring or metal surface

Diffuse reflection
Matted surface
Retro-reflection
Triple reflector, reflective tape

Mixed reflection
shiny surfaces e.g. paint, coating

2. Principle of operation

2. Principle of operation

Reflector with triple structure (active) Reflective tape with ball reflector (passive)

The triple structure turns light waves by 90° Reflective tape with ball reflector do not work with “WL”
(with polarization filter) – light waves are not turned by 90°

e.g. reflector PL80A: e.g. reflective tape REF-7610:

2. Principle of operation

Reduction of sensing range with low cost reflector

Sensing range (datasheet)

Reduced sensing range “SICK” reflector

“Low cost” reflector

New Employee Program 13

2. Principle of operation

Reflector size should be the same as

light beam diameter.

If the reflector is too small the operating

reserve is reduced or the operating
2 range cannot be fulfilled.

New Employee Program 15

2. Principle of operation

Object size should be the same as light

beam diameter.

If the object is too small the object might

not be detected.

New Employee Program 16

2. Principle of operation

When using a smaller reflector smaller

objects can be detected – however the
operating reserve is reduced or the
operating range cannot be fulfilled.

New Employee Program 17

2. Principle of operation

Material with a depolarization effect

Challenge:
• Plexiglas, laminated film or film crossover cause depolarization effects.
• The interference is not caused by the shiny surfaces, but by the material
itself.

Solution:
1. Changing the angle of reflection

2. Reduction of system sensitivity (if possible)

3. If not possible, use WSE

3. Product applications
detection of uneven objects

- Position-independent detection within the light array reflector

0.5 – 4.5 m
- Targets > 12 mm will be detected
constant light
array of 50 mm

- The installation costs could be reduced by up to 50

% in comparison to a light grid or to several
individual light switches
- Main application:
- Different heights of target
- Perforated targets

6. Summary

: Benefits
 Only one active part needs to be installed
 Large sensing ranges possible (up to 45 m)
 Simple adjustment mechanism
 Easy mounting
 Safe detection of all objects, including objects with shiny surfaces
 Detection of transparent objects (sensor for transparent objects are needed)

: Constraints
 No reliable detection of small objects at large distance
 Dual lens sensors need a minimum distance between sensor and reflector
 Problems possible with depolarization
