1. Course definition
• Numerical analysis is the study of algorithms that
use numerical approximation (as opposed
to symbolic manipulations) for the problems
of mathematical analysis.
1. Course definition
• In numerical analysis, a numerical method is a
mathematical tool designed to solve numerical
problems. The implementation of a numerical
method with an appropriate convergence check in
a programming language is called a numerical
algorithm.
• The most popular numerical methods include
finite difference method (FDM), finite volume
method (FVM), boundary element method
(BEM), finite element method (FEM)…

2. Objectives
• Course “Numerical Analysis” provides the
fundamental knowledge about errors, numerical
methods in linear algebra, approximation of
derivatives and integrals, approximate solution of
differential equations and computing skills using
the finite element method.
• Mastering the stiffness matrices and equivalent
nodal loads, the learners can perform hand
calculations, program or use an available finite
element software in order to determine stresses,
strains for deformable solids.
