DETERMINATION OF PH OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT

ISO 3071
Scope:
This international standard specifies a method for determining the pH of the
aqueous extract of textiles. This method is applicable to textiles in any form.

Principle:
The pH value of an aqueous extract of a textile is measured electrometrically
at room temperature by means of a glass electrode.

Terms & Definition:

pH: co-logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration in an aqueous extract.

Reagent:

• Distilled or deionized water,

• Potassium chloride solution (0.1 mol/l),
• Buffer Solutions, pH 4.0, 7.0, 10.0 or others as needed.

Specimen Preparation:
• Take a laboratory sample representative of the bulk of
the textile material, cut the sample into pieces having
approximately 5mm sides or of such a size as to allow the
test samples to wet out rapidly,
• To avoid contamination, handle the material as little as
possible, then take 3 test samples of 2±0.05g each.

DETERMINATION OF PH OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT

ISO 3071
Testing Procedure:

• Preparation of the aqueous extract

Place each test sample and 100ml of extracting solution(either water
or potassium chloride solution) into a stopper flask, agitate the flask for a
short period by hand to ensure that the textile material is properly wetted
out, then shake it mechanically 2h±5min at room temperature.
• Measurement of the pH of the aqueous extract
Take the aqueous extract into a beaker, immediately immerse the
electrode to a depth o at least 10mm and stir gently with a rod until the pH
value stabilizes, no need record the value for 1st sample.
Measured the pH of aqueous extract from another 2 samples and
record the pH values as the 1st and 2nd measurements.

Calculation:
• If the difference the two pH values, expressed to
the nearest 0.1 pH units, is greater than 0.2,repeat
the procedure with other test samples. When two
valid measurements have been obtained, calculate
the mean value.

PH OF THE WATER-EXTRACT FROM WET PROCESSED TEXTILES

AATCC 81-2012
Purpose and Scope:

• This test method determines the pH of wet processed textiles.

• To make a quantitative determination, the chemicals which influence pH must be removed
from the textile specimen, collected as a water extract and then accurately measured by a
pH meter.

Principle:

The specimen is boiled in distilled or deionized water. The water-extract is cooled to room
temperature and the pH is determined.

PH OF THE WATER-EXTRACT FROM WET

PROCESSED TEXTILES
AATCC 81-2012

Specimen Preparation:
Use a 10±0.1g specimen of the material to be tested, if the
specimen is difficult to wet out, then it should be cut into
small pieces.
Test Procedure:
• Boil 250 mL of distilled water at a moderate rate for 10 min,
then immerse the specimen and cover the beaker, boil for
an additional 10min.
• Allow the covered beaker and contents cool to room
temperature, then remove the specimen and allowing the
excess liquid to drip back into the extract.
• Determine the pH of the extract using pH meter.

PROCESSED TEXTILES

Evaluation:
• The pH of the water-extract depends on the
chemical treatment previously given the textile,
the pH of the wash water, and the efficiency of the
washing operation.
• Normally the pH of the water-extract will be
higher after caustic boiling than after bleaching. If
the textile is scoured after bleaching, the pH may
be lower.
• Textiles with high pH values may exhibit yellowing
tendencies, create shade change.
