What is the author's Purpose?

An author is a person who wrote something.

A purpose is a reason for doing something.

The author’s purpose is the reason why someone wrote something.

✔ Informational/Factual text is defined as text with the primary purpose of expressing

information about the arts, science, or social studies. This text ranges from newspaper

and magazine articles to digital information to nonfiction trade books to textbooks and
reference materials.

✔ Informational/factual texts endeavour to inform, to entertain, or to persuade through

the use of facts and information.

⮚ to entertain – gives amusement or enjoyment

(15 mins./day)
⮚ to persuade – to believe something, especially after sustained effort; convince

✔ an Informational Report. It is a factual text type that classifies, describes, and gives

true information about people, animals, things or phenomena. It begins with a general
classification or definition, then list a sequence of related information about the topic

and ends with a concluding comment.

How to find the author’s purpose?

1. Ask yourself, “Is it a story, poem or play?” If so, it was probably written to
entertain.

do something?” If so, it was probably written to inform.
3. Ask yourself, “Is this text trying to get me to do something?” If so, it was
probably written to persuade.

D. Problem/Application (Group Activity)

Brainstorming: The class will be divided into groups. Each group will be given a copy of the exercises.
After 10 minutes each group will post their work on the board. Assigned group reporters will do the
reporting in class.

Group 1

Directions: Read each paragraph. Write the purpose of the author in writing whether to
inform, entertain or persuade. Write your answers on the blank provided.

1. Water from this river will overflow if there are no trees to stop it. And if this will happen. Our
plants and animals will die, and people will be very much affected. Let us do thru-planting
activities. Let us all unite our efforts so that we will all survive in this world.

2. An old man suffering from a nagging backache went to see his doctor. The doctor wrote the
prescription and told the man to apply it on his back. After a week, he came back still
complaining about the pain. The doctor asked him if he followed the directions. The man turned

and on his back was the prescription firmly posted.

3. The earth is made up of three layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core. The outer layer,
called the crust, is between 16 and 40 kilometers thick. It floats on a thicker layer known as the
mantle, which is 2,895 kilometers thick. The core, which is 3,475 kilometers thick, is
surrounded by the mantle.

Group 2

Directions: Read each paragraph. Think about the authors’ purpose in writing them. Write E if
the purpose is to entertain, I if inform, P if persuade.

1. Once upon a time in a faraway village there lived a beautiful maiden named Ursula. All the
men in the village wanted to win her heart. But Ursula only loves one man and he is Artemio.

2. Our city is getting dirty; people do not show concern anymore. Yet people are the ones

making this place beautiful once more, you can do it. Together we can make something out of
it.

3. At no time in history have humans produced so much waste. Ours is a throw-away society.
No matter which area is examined, it is found that for health, safety, advertising, or other
reasons, we produce more waste. We must implement ways to make use of people’s waste to
prevent further damage to humanity.

(10 mins./day) 4. The year is 2020. Global warfare is raging. Not one country against another. This is all-out
war-humans against computers. Back in 2018 – what seems ages ago – the Athan Computer
Group perfected a revolutionary new chip that enabled computers to learn. And learn they did –
at a rate incomprehensible to humans.

5. Residents of a small village in Mabini Bohol can now look forward to a continuous supply of
clean and safe water with the completion of a water system project. The new water system in
Barangay Tangkigan here, which was funded by the Santa Monica Parish, was formally
inaugurated last week.

because she was complaining of chest pain. I hope to visit you this coming summer vacation.

away. Plants, insects, and bodies of animals are sometimes buried in layers of sedimentary
rocks. Because of heat and pressure, they become parts of the hardened rocks.

3. Laughter is one of the greatest healing devices known to man. Laughter is powerful and can
help people in many different ways. It has the power to cure something as little as a bad day or
to heal the wounds of a terminally ill person. So, try a smile and laugh on for size and live a
longer happier life with loved ones.

4. A family of mice were surprised by a big cat. Father Mouse jumped and said, "Bow-wow!"
The cat ran away. "What was that, Father?" asked Baby Mouse. "Well, son, that's why it's
important to learn a second language."

5. Playing video games can be a great way to unwind and have fun. But if you’re so addicted to
gaming that it feels like it’s taking over your life, you may have a video game addiction. A
gaming addiction is no joke—in 2018, the World Health Organization officially classified it as a
mental health condition, called “gaming disorder.” Fortunately, there are things you can do to
get your addiction under control. Try setting limits for yourself and keeping busy with other
activities. Any kind of addiction can be incredibly tough to overcome, so don’t be afraid to get
help. If you’re not able to shake it on your own, reach out to a doctor or therapist.

B. Directions: Read the informational report below and identify whether it classifies or
describes. Write your answer on your answer sheet. (5 points)

clothes when it is cold.
