Activity for Asynchronous Classes Day 2

Speed, Distance, and Time

✓ Speed is the rate of distance travelled per unit of time.

𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅
Average speed =
𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒏

✓ The unit of speed is measured as kilometer per hour (kph) or meter per second (mps).

✓ You can also apply Techan’s triangle using this format:

✓ D= distance = speed x time

✓ S= speed = distance/time

✓ T= time = distance/speed

Examples:

✓ A cyclist travels 100 km in 8 hours. What is his average speed?

𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 100𝑘𝑚
Average speed = = = 12.5 kph
𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 8 ℎ𝑟𝑠

✓ At the given rate, find the distance if he travelled for 5 hours.

Distance = speed x time = 12.5 km per hour × 5 hours = 62.5 km

Activity 3.3

Solve the following problems. Show your solutions and box your final answers. Don’t forget to write the
units/labels. (5 points each; 20 in total)

1. If a car travels 400 meters in 20 seconds, how fast is it going?

2. If a person can drive his car in the speed of 50 km per hour, how far can he cover in 2.5 hours?

3. A cyclist travels for 3 hours at a speed of 40 km per hour. Find the total distance he covered.
4. A train travels at a speed of 35 km per hour and travel a distance of 280 km. How long did it take
the train to complete its journey?
