ASHRAF HASSAN Abrasive waterjet machining (AWJM) is a new machining process, the
advantages of which include low cutting temperatures, no heat damage to the material being cut,
minimal dust, and low cutting forces. It is same as abrasive jet machining except working medium is
water. But, the traverse speed, hydraulic pressure, stand-off distance, abrasive flow rate and type of
abrasive are important. It provides cool cutting action for glass and ceramics so it can machine
delicate and heat-sensitive material. Disadvantages: It cannot used for machining material which
degrade in presence of water. As the water and abrasive make contact with raised surfaces on the
interior of a workpiece, it erodes the surface removing the unwanted particles much like a grinder or
sandpaper. A precision tooling cutting head, when used properly, can last from 500 to 1000 hours. A
key factor for its use is its efficiency and speed, eliminating down time and work stoppage. A dust
collection system is a basic requirement to prevent atmospheric pollution and health hazards so the
extra cost will be there. A mixing chamber is there in the nozzle where the abrasives get mixed with
the high-pressure water. It is a process that is used to cut and shape brittle, thin, and hard materials.
A narrow stream of high velocity water mixed with abrasive particles gives relatively inexpensive
and environment friendly production with reasonably high material removal rate. But most of the
authors considered common process parameters like hydraulic pressure, traverse speed, stand-off
distance and abrasive flow rate. It is capable of cutting softer materials (WJM) like rubber, plastics
or wood as well as harder material (AWJM) like granite. This thesis proposes a parameter selection
approach, taking the interrelations among the parameters that affect the process. Abrasive WaterJet
Machining is extensively used in many industrial applications. The function of the abrasive particles
is to enhance the cutting ability of the water jet. A narrow stream of high velocity water mixed with
abrasive particles gives relatively inexpensive and environment friendly production with reasonably
high material removal rate. An abrasive water jet cutter is 1000 times more powerful than a pure
water jet cutter. Here the machining parameters will Traverse Speed, Abrasive Flow Rate and Stand
of Distance. In the present paper an attempt is made to review the research work carried out so far in
the area of AWJM. For machining hard materials like carbide, ceramic, etc. Effect of mixing ratio on
Material removal rate: As the mass flow rate of abrasive increases its velocity decreases and will
thereby decrease the available energy for erosion and ultimately the material removal rate. It is an
environment friendly and relatively inexpensive process with reasonably high material removal rate.
The process parameters which mainly affect the quality of cutting in AWJM are Hydraulic pressure,
traverse speed, stand-off distance, abrasive flow rate types of abrasive, etc., The quality parameters
considered in AWJM are Material Removal Rate (MRR), Surface Roughness (SR), Depth of Cut,
kerf Characteristics and Nozzle wear. Other parameters can also be considered for optimization,
which influence the quality parameters. The addition of an abrasive makes a water jet cutter capable
of cutting anything regardless of its hardness or thickness. In the three axis process, the workpiece
remains stationary while the cutting tool moves along the three planes. Download Free PDF View

AWJM research relating to performance measures improvement, monitoring and process control,
process variables optimization. Since it can cut anything, tooling does not have to be changed when
moving from one product to the next. Though the process is not complicated, how it is applied varies
widely. Each of those methods has one significant disadvantage, which is the amount of heat they
produce during the cutting process. WJM is mostly used to cut soft and easy to machine materials
such as thin sheets and foils, wood, non-ferrous metallic alloys, textiles, honeycomb, plastics,
polymers, leathers, frozen, etc. The size of the abrasives is around 10 to 50 microns. The process is
free from chatter and vibration as there is no contact between the tool and the workpiece. The cutting
process is directly affected by the power provided by the cutting head. Main Parts of Water Jet

cutting is an essential part of aerospace part production from the manufacturing of jet engines to
custom designed control panels. It is an effective machining process for processing a variety of Hard
