Learning Competency:
 The learners should be
able to utilize appropriate
statistical tools in
descriptive and inferential
statistics.
OBJECTIVES:
a. explain a standard deviation;
b. calculate several problem sets
related to standard deviation; and
c. recognize the importance of
standard deviation in real life.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the best measure of dispersion,
and how?
2. How to calculate or determine the
standard deviation based on the acquired
data?
3. How to identify that the problem is
sample problem or population problem?

Standard deviation measures
the spread of a data
distribution.
- Measures the typical distance
between each data point and
the mean.
2. How to calculate or determine the standard
deviation based on the acquired data?
Steps in solving Standard Deviation:
S1: Find the mean.
S2: Subtract the mean from each score.
S3: Square each deviation.
S4: Add the squared deviations.
S5: Divide the sum by the number of scores (population
standard deviation). If it is a sample population
standard deviation (number of samples minus 1).
S6: Take the square root of the result from Step 5.

3. How to identify that the problem is sample
problem or population problem?
You have to look at the hints in
the question. With population,
you will usually see words like all,
true, or whole. For sample, words
will be like a representative,
sample, this group, etc.
