AB-PHILOSOPHY03 Modern philosophy

One of the many causes of failures in man’s actions is by simply allowing or

relying everything on faith and doing things impulsively; without proper or thorough

thinking. The main difference with rational and impulsive actions is that the latter acts

with no sufficient amount of thinking or of using reason. Now in the present time reason

and critical thinking are essential for making sound decisions and even in solving

problems which can eventually lead to negative consequences.

One of the biggest problems in the present time is the notion that we are being

bombarded with information from a variety of sources that sometimes it becomes

difficult to decide which among the choices is the best. And this is where reason and

critical thinking comes into action because with these skills anyone can easily evaluate

information and make decisions based on evidence, rather than emotions or biases.

One of the basic examples of this is the capacity to evaluate the credibility of

information online. When we see a news article or social media post, we should at least

be able to use reason and critical thinking in assessing its credibility. Especially that the

most convenient way in connecting with the world is through online and everything can

now be done via online. And with its usage we can be able tp solve problems and

develop solutions. Concrete example of this is when the Covid 19 occurred and people

tried to consult via online about whether to get vaccinated or not. One may eventually

be bombarded with information from a variety of sources, including social media and

even posts from friends and family which can eventually affect our own decision

making. Now with critical thinking and reasoning we can eventually assess the

truthfulness of an information and our decisions will not be immediately affected by

biased and prejudiced opinions.

Another important characteristic the younger generations have today (including

myself) is the acting without proper thinking or acting impulsively. This is true of so many

young people today. They want or we want immediate results, and patience seems to

be running out of place. However, with this behavior it can lead to negative

consequences. Since impulsive actions are often based on emotions and biases, rather

than reason. Impulsive actions often make it difficult to achieve our goals, because

primarily goals require time and effort, which some of us do not have. It is clear that

dreams and goals are not achieved or come to full actualization by themselves.

Another drawback of having an impulsive character is the vulnerability to manipulation.

It is clear that those who act impulsively are prone to the dangers of manipulations and

are often swayed by the opinions of others, even if those opinions are not based on

reason.

To put in a nutshell, reason and critical thinking are essential for making informed

decisions and in solving problems, as opposed to impulsive actions which can lead to

negative consequences. I am therefore, being reminded of my own self and of others

to always be critical and use reason even in the simplest of most mundane of things.
