The White-winged Guan is an animal native to Peru, it was discovered in 1876 by the

Polish scientist Jean Stolzman on the island of La Condesa in the Tumbes region. The
white-winged guan belongs to the species Penelope albipennis. The bird is
characterized by its black plumage almost throughout its body and a few white
feathers on its wings, which is why it gets its name. Its habitat is found in the coastal
regions of Peru, regions such as Lambayeque, Piura, Tumbes, including Cajamarca. In
addition, its ecosystem has to be a dry forest like that of the coastal regions. The
species was found in danger of extinction due to the following causes: * House
indiscriminately by the inhabitants. *Deforestation of the trees of the forests where
the av lives. *Lack of knowledge about the importance of conserving endangered
species. *Little intervention of the organizations in charge of making the species. A
couple was seen in 1878 in the Piura region and was not heard from there for 100
years. According to the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), they
thought that the species had completely disappeared and that the ones they saw were
the product of a mutation. The species had the support of a German orthologist
named María Koepcke who was obsessed with finding it, losing hope, she entrusted
this work to a farmer and businessman from the Olmos district, named Gustavo del
Solar, who together with the other peasants searched for through forests, rivers and
streams to the bird, being seen and captured for studies, conservation and
reproduction in protected areas. In 2001, the Chaparrí forest was created in the
regions of Lambayeque and La Libertad, whose objective is to conserve the dry forest
and the same species. To ensure the stability of the species, SERFOR, in coordination
with the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and the National Service of Natural
Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), celebrated in 2016 the National Plan for the
Conservation of the White-winged Guan until in 2021. Today this species is already
stable and has gone from being an endangered species thanks to the intervention of
the authorities and people responsible for the region, so much so that some pairs have
already been released into their natural habitat.
What actions can be done to help the white-winged guan?
