4.Function
Methodical approach in Plastics Product Design
Define the function of the part with life requirement.
State space and load limitations of the part
Define all the environmental stress that the part will be exposed to in its intended
functions.
Select several materials that appear to meet the requirements.
Do several trial designs using different materials and geometric to perform the
required function.
Evaluate the trial designs on a cost effectiveness basis.
Determine the appropriate manufacturing process for each design.
Select the probable part design, material and process.
Make (Prototype) model if necessary, to test the effectiveness of the part.
Build prototype tooling
Make prototype part and test parts to determine if they meet the required function.
Redesign the part if necessary based on the prototype testing
Retest
Make field tests
Add instructions for use.
WHY PLASTICS?
In general plastic offers impressive
advantages over metals, such as,
– No Corrosion.
– Light in weight with Good strength to weight ratio.
– Very cost effective.
– Faster production.
– More Design freedom
– Good electrical, mechanical & chemical properties
– Available in wide range of colors
– Reduced assembly time
– Less cycle time for production
LIMITATIONS OF PLASTICS
Some of the limitations of the Plastics are;
– UV resistance and outdoor weathering
– Strength, surface hardness and abrasion
resistance.
– Flammability
– Thermal Expansion
– Orientation
– Temperature resistance

THREADS
2. Threads by moulding
- American standard
- Square
- Acme
- Buttress
- Bottle
- Sharp V (Not recommended)
- Unified screw thread
THREADS
Threads used in moulded plastics
THREADS
Profiles of threads used in moulded plastics
THREADS
A split thread does not mean that the thread is split, but
the mould that made the thread is splited in to two parts.
A split thread generally leaves a visible parting line.
THREADS
Removing Threaded Parts from the Mould
Some designers may prefer to telescope the two pins butt together.
MOULDED HOLES
Holes parallel to draw
B - type screw is a blunt point, spaced thread screw with tapered threads
for fast driving. BP – type similar to B with 45o included angle unthreaded
cone point for aligning holes in assembly. U – type is a multiple thread
drive screw with blunt point, intended for making permanent fastenings.
L – type is a special type nylon screw, which is a combination of thread
forming and thread cutting. End of screw has tapered flat edge to start the
thread, remaining threads are full diameter threads.
FASTENERS
Mechanical Fasteners
FASTENERS
Mechanical Fasteners
D - type screw is a blunt point, with thread pitch similar to standard machine screw,
easy to thread in hole. F – type similar to machine screw, with blunt point, has 5
evenly spaced cutting grooves and large chip cavities. G – type is a machine screw
with single slot that forms 2 cutting edges. T – type has a blunt point, with wide flute
that gives more chip clearance, it is easier than D. BF – type has blunt point, has 5
evenly spaced cutting grooves and large chip cavities, drives faster & good pull out
strength. BT – type is same as BF without cutting grooves.
BF & BT types requires lower driving torque.
