1) Wood floors systems (wood joist flooring)
a) Wood Joists
▪ Wood joist floors are an essential subsystem of wood
light frame construction.
▪ The dimension lumber used for joists is easily
worked and can be quickly assembled on site with
simple tools.
▪ If properly engineered, the resulting floor structure
can serve as a structural diaphragm to transfer lateral
loads to shear walls
▪ Wood light framing is combustible, it must rely on
finish flooring and ceiling materials for its fire-
resistance rating.
▪ The susceptibility of wood light framing to decay
and insect infestation requires positive site drainage,
and ventilation to control condensation in enclosed
spaces.
▪ Lateral support required for joist ends

b) Wood Joist Framing

Wood joists may be supported by wood or steel beams. In either case, the elevation of
the beam should be coordinated with the perimeter sill condition and how the beam supports
the floor joists. Wood is most susceptible to shrinkage perpendicular to its grain. For this
reason, the total depth of wood construction for both the sill condition and the joist– beam
connection should be equalized to avoid subsidence of the floor plane.
