Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

LESSON TRIGGER
• Is the moon a light source?
The moon is not a light source, the
light source is the Sun.

• How do we see the moon at night?

We see the light reflected from the

Sun on the moon.

Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

LESSON TRIGGER

• Why is there a reflection of the

moon in the water?

we can see the moonlight
reflected on the water.

Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

PRE-EVALUATION Open page 112

We see objects either because they give off light or reflect light. If
an object is not a light source such as a chair, we see the chair
because it reflects light off its surfaces.

Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

MAIN CONCEPT
• Light travels away from a light source in straight lines.
• Light reaches a surface and bounces off. This is called a reflection.
• Rough surfaces bounce light off in all directions.
• Smooth surfaces reflect light in one direction.
• When light reaches our eyes, we see objects.
• We cannot see in the dark as there is no light reaching our eyes.

MAIN CONCEPT
• Recall and name shiny objects that reflect light off the
surface.
Mirror, glass, water, The Moon

• Recall and name rough objects that do not reflect light

very well.

Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

WATCH
• What's the term use to describe the process of light bouncing off
objects?

Reflection is the process of light bouncing off a reflective, smooth surface.

• What type of surfaces can reflect a large amount of light?

Shiny surfaces, such as mirrors.

Lesson 2: Reflection of Light

CRITICAL THINKING

Why do we need light?

Without light we would not be able to
see. We would be in darkness.

How does light reflect off surfaces?

Light is reflected in many different ways.
Light that is reflected of an object enters
our eyes and we see that object. Light is
reflected of light-coloured surfaces easier
than dark-coloured surfaces.
