Homework I
Assigned : 4 March 2024, Monday
Due : 12 March 2024, Tuesday, 23:59, in PDF to ODTUCLASS

(1) Air flow around an elliptical object with a thickness of 0.1 m is surveyed at constant x-stations
A and B by varying the position of a probe in the vertical direction y. These stations are sufficiently
away from the object, as shown in the figure below. The survey indicates that the x-component of
the velocity at station A is uniform and equal to u(xa , A) = U∞ = 40 m/s, but varies linearly at
station B as u(xB , y) = U∞ (0.4 + 0.6|y|/h) for |y|/h ≤ 1, and, u(xB , y) = U∞ for |y|/h > 1, where
h is equal to twice as the thickness of the body. Since stations A and B are sufficiently away from
the body the pressure there are measured both equal to free-stream pressure.
(a) If the red dashed line describes the surface of the control volume, calculate the mass flow
rate across the AB plus CD surfaces.
(b) If the air density at station A is equal to 1.200 kg/m3 , calculate the drag force on the body.

(2) An airfoil is tested in a high altitude and high speed wind tunnel. The airflow at well upstream
of the airfoil is determined to have a static pressure of 30.872 kPa, static temperature of 229.65 K,
and Mach number of 0.784.
Measurements at the points marked as A2 , B2 , and C2 in red along the three streamlines shown
in the provided figure indicate static pressure values of 46.308, 24.697, and 25.315 kPa, respectively;
static temperature values of 257.85, 218.17, and 208.98 K, respectively; and Mach numbers of 0,
0.8979, and 0.9526, respectively.
(a) What is the altitude the tunnel conditions correspond to?
(b) Discuss whether the above measured values are reasonable (i.e. consistent and/or make
sense) or not. Should one rely on the measurements at these points?
(c) Characterize the flows of the fluid particles along these three streamlines. That is, what do
these particles experience (what might be happening) along these flow lines? Discuss.
