ABOUT CHAMBER MUSIC
These Suzuki Violin School pieces are scored for two violins, on~ viola and one cello. This grouping of instruments is called a string quartet.
I

In the da~s before radio and television, people made their own entert:a;inment at home. Learning to play an instrument was as much a part of education
as math qr social studies. Members of a particularfamily would gath6r in the "parlor" or "drawing room" after the evening meal and make music.
Guests t9 the home would be invited to join in. .

Since mu'sic played by small groups of people was originally perlormed in rooms (chambers) in people's houses, this music became known as Chamber
Music. Ul1like symphonic music oi opera, chamber music requires very little space and can be played just about anywhere.

In achamber group - such as a string quartet -there is only one playerforeach part in the music (not Jike an orchestra where as many as ID people
play eact¡ part). Wj)en you play in a chamber group, you are a soloist; your part is necessary to the music whether you have an "easy" part - or !!
more difficult one.

Chambd'groups do not usually need conductors. They often work with a coach who listens to them play and offers suggestions about tempos, dynamics,
expression and bowings. But really it is the players themselves who "conduct" their perlormances. Whoever starts playing first usually "leads" the .
-
music u~ing body movements and facial gestores. If everyone starts playing at the same time, one ofthe players wiII act as leader helping keep -
the grou~ together. In a string quartet, this person may be the first violinist - but it could be any of the group.
¡
Some mu~icians like playing in chamber groups betterthan any other type of music-making. They like the idea of playing as soloists while also making
music in ,he company of friends and musical colleagues.
¡ .
Haydn, 1fozart, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms arejust a few ofthe great composers who wrote music specifically for such groups as string
quartets. These composition.s, in fact, while really being "symphonies" or "sonatas" for four instruments, became known as "String Quartets". So-
a "string guartet" can be either a group of musicians - or a piece of music.

Most cha(nber groups are known by names which they choose. Some famous string quartets ~ho play and make recordings today are The Julliard
'
String Qu:artet, The Tokyo String Quartet and The Kronos String Quartet.' .c
