STOICHIOMETRY

 The relationship between the relative

quantities of substances taking part in a
reaction or forming a compound
 In other words, being able to calculate how
much of each substance produced and what is
leftover when given the starting or ending
amounts
 Outside of Chemistry, this process is known as
dimensional analysis

CONVERSIONS!
 What are some units of time?
 Think to yourself! How many seconds are in a minute?
In an hour? A day? A week? How did you solve it?
 This is how Ms. Pham solves how many seconds in a
week!

3
CONVERSIONS!
 Let’s go the opposite way, how many minutes in 1635
seconds? How many hours? days? weeks?
 This is how Ms. Pham solves how weeks in 1635
seconds!

4
CONVERSIONS!
 This same method is used in other conversions,
including chemistry, but that is for another day.
 Today, let’s just focus on normal conversions (AKA
dimensional analysis)!!!

5
RULES
 Always look at your conversion factors and try to map out what
you need to do. Every conversion factor is 1 step that needs to be
taken!
 In the step, half of the conversion factor will go on top, half of the
conversion factor will go on the bottom.
 Always match units from the previous step! Whatever unit was on
top in the previous step will go on the bottom of the current step!
 You will always multiply by the top numbers and divide by the
bottom numbers!

6
COMMON CONVERSION FACTORS

No need to memorize! These will be provided if they are needed!

7
EXAMPLE 1
 How many centimeters are in 3.87 kilometers?

8
EXAMPLE 2
 How many seconds are in 124 days?

9
EXAMPLE 3
 How many milliliters of water are in 5.7 gallons?

10
EXAMPLE 4
 35458 inches are equal to how many kilometers?

11
EXAMPLE 5
 How many ounces in 3 kilograms?
