I’ve been really sick the past few
days and I’m still feeling pretty bad.
I should be in bed, drinking tea and
relax but noooooo! Guess what I’m
doing? I’m thinking about the future
of the SDJ, the future of our breed and
trying to finish this issue...

ing pretty but belive me there still are

and promoted by the best dogmen
around who are very much aware of
this and they are fighting to keep our
breed. I really respect them for this.
They are faced with a difficult task be-
cause of the bad name the American
Pit Bull Terrier has in show circles...

F
irst time I looked at her was
when she was 11 months old.
I put her on a bad ass JEEP/
REDBOY/CARVER dog. The funny
thing is, is that the dog I put her on
was a grand daughter of QUEEN (Ms.
JACKSON’s dam) BUSDOWN. BUS-
DOWN was a bad 2xw out of Death-
row’s MUGGZ / CH BUMPY 4XW (Loo-
ney Toons’ QUEEN’s daughter) that
beat a CH in 1:50 but passed the next
day. These two swapped it out. Ms.
Jackson fought the face with a ven-
gence and BUSDOWN was driving
for the chest and throat. BUSDOWN
put the pressure on MJ after about a
vicious ten min we broke it up. Peo-
ple were standing around the box in
disbelief as this not yet year old dog
cranked up and fought the face like

SON came about when we bred our triple bred daughter of and there as I thought I got a special

ably beat anything else her size be-
sides MJ but MJ was to slick and fast
and stayed on PEANUT muzzle and
PEANUT got where she wanted the
chest and bit hard. It was a bloody 15
min roll as both these bitches were
trying to kill each other they were
not giving an inch. We broke it up and
both these bitches were screaming to
go. That was a good schooling for MJ
because she learned that day never
let a dog get them legs cause she did
not walk on that bad baby for about a
month.
Her last schooling was on what
was suppose to be a good lil REDBOY/
JEEP dog that this famous midwest
had. On the release MJ hit that gyp
in her face on the release and never
let go. He picked his suppose bad gyp
up in three min. After that I seen all I
needed to see.
For her 1st I was hooked into
K.I.C kennel but they paid a forfit so
I then hooked into Englewood Assis-
sin’s BLACK FUTURE 2xw at 30 lbs.
She was off of E.W.A CH BLACK BOY
x E.W.A FUTURE. BLACK FUTURE
came in right on weight looking like a
lil black lion and built like a tank. MJ
came in at 29 1/4. On the release both
dogs shoot out of the corner MJ to the
face and BLACK FUTURE to the chest.
And all of a sudden BLACK FUTURE
let go of the chest and shoots in MJ
stifle. BLACK FUTURE and her back-
ers were screaming that it over thats
her hold and she don’t come out.
BLACK was in MJ stiffle for about 30
seconds. MJ peeled her out buy the
face and proceded to take her apart.
MJ was punishing her in the face and
chest. MJ broke her shoulder and
Icould see it was only a matter of
time as BLACK was calling the police.

What I did not know is that MJ was
fanged for about 7-8 min. My part-
ner brought to my attetion so the ref
unfanged the dogs and MJ started to
really chomp on BLACK face. BLACK
turns from the kissing in the mouth.
I get a quick handle and BLACK FU-
TURE curs out in 28 min.
Her second match was into Mask-
man and Justin’s SCRATCH 2xW at 31
lbs. She was a hard biting gyp that had
killed two dogs in short order under
30 min. My boy Down And Dirty Ken-
nels J told me that when he matched
into her that Maskman gyp peeled his
gyp face off. He told me u could lit-
terly grab his gyp muzzle and peel it
back to the middle of her head and all
u seen was skull and blood so I knew
she was a hard biting gyp. Ready To
Rumble had also called me and told
me this gyp had d.o.a one of C-Dubs’
gyps in short order. He told Rumble
to tell me not to bet that much money.
But I knew and felt my gyp was un-
beatable. SCRATCH comes in right
on weight at 31 but this bitch is a big
ass 31 she towered over MJ and was
longer to boot. MJ tips the scales at
30. On the release MJ shoots straight
to the face and is biting hard as hell.

MJ assulted this gyp for 20 min a turn
is called at 21min. MJ somehow knew
she had to take her out cause she felt
how hard that gyp was biting. At about
22 SCRATCH bit MJ in the chest and
MJ damn near went limp I could not
belive this gyp had that type of mouth.
The bitch must have hit a nerve. MJ
grabbed her buy the face and held
on. It took her a min or so to get het
feet back under her. I got a handle
SCRATCH to go first they dog hesited
in the corner till about the 4 count.
When she started out of her corner I
let MJ go and she smashed her in the
corner and grabbed her in the face.
MJ was mad she went across her face
and knocked 3 of her fangs out her
mouth and started to punish the bitch.
SCRATCH started to cur snapping and
that bithch was hitting MJ with 3 and
4 piece spicy everytime she bit. I got
a quick handle and MJ goes like a
rocket and grabs her in her brisket
and bit down hard SCRATCH starts to
call the police on top of that she is cur
snapping viciously I hurry up and get
a handle and Maskman and Justin’s
SCRATCH curs out at 29. After the
match Justin comes over to me while
I was cleaning up my gyp and tells me
no gyp has ever done what MJ done to

his gyp. He said all her fangs are gone
out her mouth and she had shotgun
holes in her face. I told him that what
that BULL / QUEEN blood would do to
you.
A couple of weeks after this match
I had bred MJ for the second time to
the Loose Cannon Boys’ CH THUR-
STON HOWELL III. The first time I bred
her it was to her littermate brother
CH SADAM from the repete breeding
of BULL / QUEEN. We got some damn
good dogs out of both of those breed-
ings. After that MJ was being ducked.
I collected 4 forefits with her I got
tired of puting her in keep only to get
paid forefit. So i retired my gyp as she
was gettin up there in age. About a
year and a half went by and when she
came back in heat I bred her to our
son of W.C.C’s CH KILLIAN JIMMY
JONES. She had 9 pups and started to
kill them. All of them died but a pair.
About a year after that I hooked up
with Ace & J of C.S.K. This kennel is
a class act. Ace blessed our kennel
and let me breed to their CH BOGART
a heavy bred BOOMERANG dog. He
was a killer said buy most who saw
him in action and he was a BIS win-
ner to boot. I could not wait til the
pups were born. MJ had 6-7 pups off
BOGART but she to killed all of them
but one female I named Ms KEYS. I
was pissed as MJ had raised both of
her litters when bred to SADAM and
THURSTON HOWELL. Now she has
killed all her pups but one in her
last two litters. So I told myself and
her after a damn near 3 year lay off u
don’t want to raise pups u r about to
do what u love to do best.
I called Down & Dirty and told
him to find me a 31 lbs gyp he said he
would see what he can do. He called
me back about a week later and told
me some boys out of indiana had one.
I told him to hook it for 8 weeks. Off
we go to a 3 card show with some of
the top kennels in the midwest in at-
tendence. Were hooked into Scratch
To Win Kennels at 31lbs. They were
using their BLACK PEARL dog out
of Team 316’s BLOW x The Game &
Team 316’s SELENA. BLACK PEARL
came in over the weight by a 1/4lb and
MJ was right on. So after a 3 year lay
off and at the age of seven I release
MJ she goes straight to PEARL head
riding her out. That kind of messed
me up as MJ would always come out
fighting the face with a vengence. I
guess granny MJ had other plans.
BLACK PEARL drove and MJ just rode
her out controlling her by the head.
At about the 20 min mark BLACK
PEARL starts to come on and that
made MJ mad. She switched from
the side of the head and grabbed her
in her sweet spot the muzzle and bit
down. A turn called on BLACK PEARL
at 22 min the dogs fought hard with
MJ on the head and pearl in th chest
shoulder. PEARL got a hold of MJ toe
and shook and broke it. I got a handle
at 32 min I get MJ to the corner and
noticed she is fighting fanged. I un-
fanged her in the corner. It’s PEARL
turn to go on the release she tip toed
out the corner I let MJ go and she
slammed into her and grabbed her
in the face and PEARL has now been
took out her game as she is trying
to grab legs and feet. Another quick
handle and its my time to go MJ goes
like a rocket and slams into PEARL
on her head. PEARL made one last
hurrah an grabbed MJ in the chest
and shook. I noticed MJ was not bit-
ing hard and good as i know she can.
I look down and she is fanged again
the ref told us to break the dogs and
we unfang them. We face the dogs

and on release MJ stopped playing
wit her and shot in an grabbed her
muzzle and did not let go she was de-
stroying her. PEARL to like the rest
of them started to call the police. MJ
is in good and PEARL is done in she
was getting killed she was laid flat
on her back ready to meet her maker
when all of a sudden MJ lets go and
shoots for her throat like all them bull
dogs are known for and I got a quick
handle and PEARL curs out on the
scratch line at 40 thus making MJ a
champion. MJ also won Best In Show
that day. She also put Abraham’s
BULL and Loony Toons’ QUEEN on
the R.O.M list that day to. She is truely
an ace by everyone that seen her. She
now is retired for good and is going to
bred to the best dogs.
She will be bred to CSK’s SAIGON,
Geno’s LIL BULl, and Down & Dirty
CH SOONER and hopefully GR CH
TANGO. I would like to send a shout
out to my kennel partners Looney
Toons / DVK’S Wilson without u bro
none of this would have been pos-
sible also to my brothers Killumanti,
M-pak and Pelle Pell, Rob of Sterling
Knls. Also I want to give a big shout
out to my mans Ace & J of C.S.K.,
thanks for all the advice and info on
this line of dogs. And boys we have
some unfinished business. To all our

As a young man
in the early 70’s
there were guys in
my area a lot older
than I was out fight-
ing dogs, but at the
time none if them
had pitbulls, they
just had any kind of
dog that was will-
ing to fight. I knew
about pitbulls, as
there were people
in my family that
had them. One day
I asked my dad if I
could get one and he
said to me “as long
as you can keep the
yard up and the cars
cleaned”. This was
something I was al-
ready doing anyway,
so basically it was
my father’s way of
saying that I would
have to work for it...

How did you get started Joe?
I was only fourteen years old
when he got me that pup, and from
that point on I was hooked! I named
that puppy Gangster, and over the
next 3 years I was stopping all the
dogs in the neighborhood with him. It
was over those few years when I first
started hearing about guys that were
really into the pitbull game, and from
that point on I knew it was my goal to
be a real bulldog man. The first dog-
man I met was “Big Daddy” G.Wilcox,
and it was he who showed me what
a real bulldog looked like. One day I
was at a guy’s home who knew Mr.
Wilcox, and as Mr. Wilcox was pass-
ing by that day he decided to stop in
and say hello. We ended up talking
dogs for hours, he and I just really hit
it off, and it was then when he invited
me over to his home. Well you know I
had to bring Gangster with me, I just
couldn’t help wanting to show this
“real dogman” that I had a first class
bulldog. I will never forget the smile
on his face as he listened to me talk,
I already knew everything and Gang-
ster and I had the bulldog world in our
grips. Mr. Wilcox asked me if I wanted
to see how bad my bulldog really was,
and I quickly replied with “YES!” I just
couldn’t wait to see the look on a real

dogman’s face when he finally gets to
set his eyes on Gangster.
I remember sitting up in the loft of
Wilcox’s barn waiting for him to return
with his dog, and that’s when I heard
this god awful screaming getting
closer to the barn. I thought to my-
self “what the hell is that?” and next
thing you know Mr. Wilcox is coming
through the loft door with a brindle
dog in his arms that is fighting like
hell to get loose and screaming to go.
It wasn’t even 20 minutes and I could
see that Gangster was in big trouble,
and that’s when he said to me “that’s
enough, let’s go ahead and get them.
You have an ok dog, but he is no pit
dog”. It was Mr. Wilcox who gave me
my first real bulldog, and with that
bulldog I won my very first match. We
called that dog Cisco Kid and he was
a real bulldog. From that day I never
looked for anything less in a dog, and
I learned to never make a dog out to
be more than he really is. Mr. Wilcox
Joe Abraham at 14 year old of age
and I became very good friends, and
he introduced me to many of the dog-
men around the area.
Major Influences?
The sport itself was a major in-
fluence to me because as young boy
I always loved to compete. This was
a way for me to compete by not only
using my physical abilities but also
my mind. A fool with a dog is just that,
so knowledge is always the key. I re-
member seeing some old pictures of
dogmen when I was a kid; these men
carried themselves like real profes-
sionals. I don’t remember the gentle-
men’s names in the photographs but
I will never forget the way they were
dressed. They were wearing nice
suits and fancy hats, and just looked
like true gentlemen. I always liked
to stick to that same look, so I guess
you could say that was one of my in-
spirations right there. I took the sport
very seriously, and anything serious
must be handled professionally. I felt
in order to be a true professional you
must first carry yourself as such, and
this is why I was always dressed up
when I would compete. I guess if I had
to choose what inspired me the most
I would say it was the fact that I got
to compete with something I love, and
that’s dogs.
Why did you choose the bloodline
you use the most?
I chose the line I use most be-
cause they came from a family of
good dogs. Even when I went and
bought a dog or pup from another
kennel it had to come from a fam-
ily of solid bulldogs. There are many
dogs out there that become champion
or grand champion that have little to
no good dogs in the generations be-
hind them, and even when these high
caliber dogs are bred there just isn’t
any high percent of bulldogs show-
ing up off of them. Sure I like to breed
to a champion or grand champion,
but that’s not always what I am look-
ing for. Some dogs can produce and
some can’t. The dogs I use came from
a family of bulldogs that did what they

had to do to win. I really love blood
that produces a high percent of dogs
that are willing to race. The more
dogs that are willing to go, the better
the odds of getting one that you will
be happy with. The dogs don’t have
to all come out aces, just give me a
good amount that are willing to give
me 100% and I can work from there.
Do you make a distinction be-
tween a match dog and a stud dog/
brood bitch?
Many people have their own opin-
ion on what a stud dog should be, but
an opinion is just someone’s own per-
sonal belief. That’s what this sport is
all about, each man using their own
knowledge and ideologies to create
and compete with the best animals
possible. A stud dog for me has to
be of match quality but doesn’t nec-
essarily have to be a matchdog. He
doesn’t have to be an ace, but he will
have to show me some kind of game-
ness along with the ability to pro-
duce the genetic traits in his line. He
doesn’t have to be a winner he just
has to show me that he has what it
takes win. I am looking for certain
characteristics in the dog that I am
hoping that he can pass on. He pos-
sesses certain attributes that I am
looking for in an animal, so now its
time to see if he can produce those
same qualities that he carries with-
in himself or his genetic makeup.
Weather he is a grand champion or a
no time winner has nothing to do with
his ability to pass down his charac-
teristics. He has already shown you
that he has something worth trying
to add now you can only hope he has
the ability to reproduce it. I like my
stud dog to come from a line of match
worthy dogs that have not only shown
to be solid bulldogs but to have pro-
duced them as well. I have seen many

champions and grand champions that
could not produce a match quality
dog. I have spoke with gentlemen that
have said they would never breed to
male that has not won a single match,
yet some of these same guys would
breed to a dog that has lost before.
I’m not talking about a loss while
coming; I am talking about a dog that
has taken the count. When I ask them
why they would breed to a quitter
they say “because he could bite like
hell”. If a person is lacking mouth and
they see a dog that either has great
mouth himself, or has proven to pro-
duce dogs with good mouth then they
make a decision such as this one.
Just because a dog is a cur doesn’t
mean he can’t produce an ace, but I
know I would not be backing my bitch
up to him and that’s a fact. When your
bulldog is in the thick of it you don’t
want thoughts of his cur daddy sitting
in the back of your mind, well at least
I don’t anyway. I’m all for adding what
you’re lacking, but I won’t take the
chance of letting any more curs in.
When you have a good stud dog he
should be able to produce whatever
is in his genetic makeup. He should
be able to produce all the good traits
in his line, but not necessarily always
combined together into one dog. Not
every dog he produces will be an ace,
but a good number of them will con-
tain at least one desired trait you are
looking for in an animal, some may
even have it all. Lets say your stud
dog produces a litter of pups, and in
that litter you get one that can bite
like hell but scratches like a turtle,
yet in this same litter you get another
that can’t bite through a paper bag
but comes across like a rocket. Lets
say your stud puts some dogs on the
ground that have the ability wrestle
and stay out of trouble, and in the
same litter has dogs that will just
do nothing but shoot to the backend
like barnstormers, you can see he
has the ability to produce many traits
that you desire so now you just have
to figure out how to get them all into
one bulldog. A good stud dog does
not have to give me all around aces
every time I breed him, just give me
a good amount of dogs that I can win
with and I will do the rest. A matchdog
doesn’t have to always be an ace, to
me it’s a dog that you look at and say
to your self “I can win with this dog”.
A good stud is going to give you
high percent of dogs with the ability
to win, weather it’s by mouth, game-
ness, slickness, etc. Once you see
that your stud dog has the ability to
produce the good traits that make up
his genetic background the next step
will be to try and put all the traits you
desire together in one dog. This is
easier said than done, but ultimately
this is what we are aiming for.
The odds of you getting what
you’re looking for are much better
when you are keeping and culling the
entire litter yourself. You can always
farm them out, but over the years we
have seen that this does not work.
Some people simply don’t have the
same eye as what we have and just
aren’t familiar enough with the dogs
in the line. Most people are just look-
ing for these hard mouthed rough
dogs. Don’t get me wrong I love a hard
mouthed dog, but it’s not the main
thing I look for or breed for. I believe if
a good stud dog has some dogs in him
that can really bite then he will have a
good chance of passing it on if he is
truly a producer. A good stud is going
to be able to throwback generations
and produce the traits that are in his
linage. A stud in my opinion should
always be checked for some type of
gameness, the last thing you want to
breed is a cur.

Now when dogs turn out good or
bad we can’t always put it on the stud
because the pups will also carry the
bitch’s blood as well. I will say this,
I am much harder on a male than I
am female when it comes to breed-
ing, but everything must be checked.
There are a lot of bitches out there
that have never been touched and
still produced some very good dogs,
but the same way you can breed for
gameness you can also breed for shit.
I have heard many guys say that they
wanted to breed for top pit dogs, and
I always told them that gameness
starts within them. Many people are
just fearful to look and see what they
have. So many guys these days are
just breeding dogs so they can have
pups to sell, and even though it may
be hard on dogmen to keep them all
they should always be trying to bet-
ter their dogs with each breeding they
do. You can’t just breed dogs by look-
ing at the pedigrees; it just doesn’t
work that way. I have all the faith in
the world in my line of dogs, but that’s
only when I am breeding them or
picking the breeding being done with
them. A line of dogs can turn to shit
very fast if you have no idea what your
doing. A champion in this day in age
means nothing, there is just too many
frauds out there with their off the
chain bullshit looking to make a quick
buck. If I was to breed to a dog that
has never been matched it would be
because of the men who owned him
and not his pedigree. I would breed to
any checked stud dog on a real dog-
man’s yard before I would breed to a
paper champ in the hands of some-
one who has never done a thing in
these dogs. A good stud/brood dog
should be more than just a pretty
pedigree; they should be a tested
dog with the ability to produce qual-
ity animals like the ones behind them.

They should always have
something to offer each
other. Remember, from
the structure of your bull-
dogs all the way down to
the desired performance
characteristics within
their genetic makeup is
ultimately what you’re
breeding for. Learn your
line of bulldogs and stick
with your program. If ei-
ther the stud dog or brood
bitch are not everything
you want in a bulldog then
each should compliment
one another for what they
are lacking, hoping to
create what you are re-
ally looking for. You will
see the Queen of Hearts
a lot in my pedigrees, and
that’s because she is the
dog that I am trying to get
close to or recreate. Just remember,
no matter how many times you see
the name of a champion throughout
a pedigree has nothing to do with the
quality of your animals if you are not
breeding to better the dogs them-
selves. I have no problem inbreed-
ing and line breeding as long as I see
that the quality of dogs I want are still
there. A good stud/brood dog for the
most part should produce its genetic
characteristics no matter what it is
bred to. This is why people pay money
to breed their females to studs dogs
that are known for putting bulldogs
on the ground, they are looking to
better the dogs on their yard. This
is why I loved my little Bull male; he
produced solid dogs no matter what
I bred him to.
Bull was very tough dog to
breed; he wanted nothing to do with
it. I didn’t plan on matching Bull af-
ter I tested him, I pretty much just
Abraham’s BULL
planned on breeding him when I felt
his ingredients were needed. The dog
was so damn fight crazy that I just
went ahead and matched him anyway.
After Bull won I wanted to get some
dogs on the ground off him. I figured
he would need to be bred artificially
but I didn’t want to waste a breeding
to one of my good females because of
human error due to my lack of artifi-
cial knowhow, so I did my own experi-
ment. This is a pretty funny story that
can be vouched for by many dogmen.
My wife had a pet chow that I noticed
was coming into heat so I went ahead
and did a breeding with her and Bull
to see if I could get it right. The chow
ended up having a litter of pups that
I gave away to friends of mine that
were looking for guard dogs. These
guys were all dogmen, but some-
times it’s better to have a non-pitbull
or a mix breed out there in the open
to bark and warn of thieves. I ended

up keeping one that I
chained in front of my
house next to the gate
that grew up to be a pretty
good guard dog and an
even better roll dog. My
friend Ken Allen who
owned Tornado planned
on buying a matchdog
from another known dog-
man and wanted to see
her roll. They met up at
my place and Ken asked
me if I could use one of
my dogs to put on his
bitch and I said “okay”.
When the other guy got
there with the dog I went
and grabbed my chow/
pitbull, which looked like
a pitbull just with a little
longer hair. I remember
Ken saying “I don’t want
that cur, go grab a bull-
dog!”, and the other guy was saying
the same thing. So to make it happen I
went ahead and bet the guy $200 that
my mutt would go 15 minutes with his
big money dog, and it was on! Man
that chow/pitbull was beating the hell
out of that other dog, and we just let
them bang. At 40 minutes the chow
had her toes and stuff broken off, but
when I let that bitch go she came like
a jet. Many dogmen know this dog be-
cause she was right out there at my
house and she was rolled on many
dogs and never once did she pull up.
By no means would I ever match her,
breed her, or sell her, but she was fun
to bring around every now and then to
make a man feel like shit.
What were the most successful
combinations you have made?
My most success combinations
were Bolio, Maloney, and Boomerang
to Redboy. When I bred Queen to Buck

their son Bull seemed to be a very
good producer, and when I bred him
to Ch Sunshine it produced a solid lit-
ter of bulldogs. Sunshine was bred
similar to Queen. Many years ago I
bought a son of Bass Tramp Redboy
and Marlowe’s Brandy Girl named
Medlin’s Red Ace. After I bred him a
few times I sold him to Mr. Stevens. I
bred Red Ace to some dogs I got from
Marlowe, and later on I crossed Bull
back into some grand daughters of
Red Ace and came up with some re-
ally good dogs.
How do you feel about heavy in-
breeding?
Inbreeding can be okay as long as
the dogs are still coming out match
quality, but I only do it when I am
trying to preserve a dog that is seen
most in the pedigree. I am still check-
ing my animals and at the same time
I am trying to recreate the dog that
is seen most. This is why you want
to breed from a good family of bull-
dogs; there will be a lot more to throw
back on. Too much inbreeding can
make dogs weaker and sickly. Now if
you see me with a heavy inbred dog
its because I have seen something in
him or her that I have seen in his or
her ancestors, but in order to do this
you must know the line of bulldogs
you are working with. How can you
recreate something you know noth-
ing about? Most inbred dogs I owned
were used as stud dogs or brood
bitches, but they still had to show me
that they were bulldogs.
What is the main quality you are
looking for in a match dog?
The main thing I look for in a
match dog is the ability to win. I look
at a dog and ask myself if I feel I can
win with this dog. In some ways it’s
different than picking a stud dog, and
I will tell you why. A match dog may do
some things that you may not like, but
yet he still has a way to win. You may
not want to pass these genes down
through your breeding program, but
you still have a dog you can win with.
Weather or not people are talking bad
about him and the things he does has
nothing to do with the fact that he is
still competing and winning. Sure ev-
eryone wants to show up with an ace
killer, but the main goal here is to
win. I have certain things I look for in
a match dog, but above all I just want
the dog to give me 100% and show me
he has what it takes to win.
I like a dog that can fight on their
feet and wrestle with a bigger dog. I
have saw a lot of dogs that just want
to hang out and make a comeback
or just lay around and work from the
bottom, but if you do that with me I
am going to kill you. I like a dog with
a hard mouth, but even if they don’t I
am still okay with that as long as they
are on their feet bringing some pres-
sure. I want my dogs very powerful!
Sometimes the power alone can be so
overwhelming that it will make many
of them just give up, even if they are
not getting bit hard. I try to come with
stamina because most my dogs are
very aggressive and work at a very fast
pace. I also like them to have some pit
smarts, but more than anything I look
to come with gameness. Gameness
can get you the win most of the time,
and it will definitely need to be there
when you get hot in the late rounds.
Gameness alone can’t always win, but
it can compete with the best of them
if they are up on their feet and work-
ing to win. I’m not saying that a hard
mouth dog can’t beat a game bulldog,
but you do need to know what that
hard mouth dog will do when doesn’t
have the chance to take control of the
fight. I guess it just all depends on the

two dogs in the race.
I remember going in Frank Bunce
years ago; he had a champion named
Cassius Clay that had beat dogs well
under the hour mark but had also
been 2 hours as well. Frank had been
around these dogs for a long time
and he was a dogman. I saw Frank
win a lot of matches so I felt that
this would be a good test. Frank’s
dogs were known for gameness, and
I know he had a lot of Ozzie’s stuff
over there that could clamp. I was
using my Sunny Boy dog and he had
it all. I remember telling some guys
there that it wouldn’t be Sunny Boy’s
mouth that got us the win, it was go-
ing to be his power. On the day of the
match I seen that Dog Walker was
handling Frank’s champion for him,
and the match started at such a fast
pace that I knew it wouldn’t be long.
Cassius was a slick head dog, so I
knew we had to bring the pressure
if we wanted to keep up. They both
came out the gate fast and met in the
middle, and Sunny Boy took him right
back to where he came from. Sunny
went into his side and shook him off
all four feet, and when he went down
Sunny hit him right in his throat and
was putting it to him! I saw Ch Cas-
sius’ eyes and I knew he was done,
and within 12 minutes he wanted out.
We got a handle at 14 minutes and
Cassius the 4xw was counted out.
Before this everyone thought Cas-
sius was a game dog because he had
seen hours in the pit against top dog-
men, so it goes to show that the time
limit a dog has fought for has nothing
to do with how game a dog is. Mouth
is not the solution for testing a dog’s
gameness, but its constant relentless
pressure that will have the other dog
packing it in. Ideally when I am com-
ing I want to come with gameness,
stamina, power, wrestling ability, a

mouth. You definitely need some real
gameness, because no matter what
there will come a time that your bull-
dog will have to overcome diversity.
Mouth alone is just not going to do
it in the fast lane. I have seen many
good head dogs just make a fool out
of a very hard mouthed dog.
Tell me about your schooling
methods….
I like a dog to show me he wants
it. I never make a dog do something
that they don’t want to do. I like to
walk something by them and see if
they show me that they want to get it
on. Once I know that they want some
action I will go ahead and give it to
them. I don’t like rolling them a lot,
so I make sure the first roll is with
a really good dog. I’ve seen so many
guys try to start two young dogs up on
each other when neither one of them
is fully cranked. Everything you do in
schooling should be to teach them
what you want them to learn. If you
roll your animal on one that will not
come right out and put in work then
you have just gave your puppy a bad
schooling lesson. When mine is ready
he is going to see 20 minutes right out
of the gate. I may break them apart
every 5 minutes to let him know this
is a game, kind of like when you take
the hide or toy from a pup and he tries
like hell to get back at it. If they show
me anything I don’t like then the test
will go longer because I want to find
out what is really on his mind. This
is why you must use a good dog when
schooling one; you need to see how
they feel about pressure. Some dogs
I may need to only look at once to see
what I need to see. I won’t roll a dog
more than three times, and all this is
done before they are 2 years old. The
roll dog that I am using to school my
pups with will be taken out of the box
first, and I will let my pup watch him
leave. It makes them want it more
and they feel like they have chased
the other off. This makes it their pit
now, and they will remember what
time it is when they are put back in it.
What is your experience with
dogs that start at a real young age?
Do you believe in the saying “early to
start….early to quit?
I don’t believe just because a dog
starts young that it will quit early.
Some lines of dogs start at a very
young age and some don’t, it is what
it is. Just because a pup starts at a
young age doesn’t mean it should be
rolled, at lot of times with these dogs
the mind can get ahead of the body. A
lot of young starting pups are ruined
because a guy is rolling them just so
he can show others how hot is pup is
or its willingness race. Believe it or
not a dog only has so many fights in it,
and the bad thing is you never know
when it’s at its end until it is too late.
I feel that each roll or match takes a
little bit out of them. Now I will say
that if they are not being hurt during
these rolls and matches then they
still have more to give. I guess it all
depends on what they have to endure
during these races.
I saw a dog years ago that was
a really good bulldog. This dog had
won a match prior to the one I had
seen, and I heard it was a very hard
match. Well the match I had seen was
no easier, it was a very hard battle
that went over an hour. The dog was
brought back out again 9 months
later for his championship, and the
owner was telling me that he just
didn’t seem to have the same drive
as he once did. At about 3 minutes af-
ter the dogs came out and hit the one
who had shown to be a true warrior in
two previous matches was no longer

willing to fight. Some lines of dogs
can be matched at 15 months old
and be okay, and some can’t. This is
why knowing your line of dogs is very
important. I think maybe because a
pup starts young that were looking
for more, but in all actuality it means
nothing. Sure, I am always happy
when I have a pup that starts young
because I know I can sit on him and
not have to worry about if it’s going to
crank up or not down the road, but I
still never rush it. I believe a cur is a
cur no matter when he or she decides
to start. I have had slow starters and
fast starters that have both turned out
to be really good dogs, so don’t look
at a fast starter to be any better than
a slow starter. I won’t sit here and
down another man for his beliefs on
how a dog should or shouldn’t start,
because what works for one man may
not be the same case for another.
Some guys are okay with having a 3
year old dog that they are still waiting
on to start, but that’s just not my kind
of dog. At 2 years old I want to know if
I have a match dog or not. Learn your
bloodline and you will then know a lit-
tle more about how your dogs should
start. The bloodline a man runs is go-
ing to have a big part in the quality of
his animals. Now the blood doesn’t
mean shit if it isn’t coming from
someone who knows what they are
looking at. Many guys run the same
bloodline yet there is a big difference
in the caliber of their animals. Some
people just really have no clue what
a good dog looks like, and that’s be-
cause they never seen one before. My
suggestion for the guys with the hot
pups is just to let their bodies grow
and catch up to their crazy minds,
and don’t rush. The dog game is like a
chess match, and every move should
be thought out.

Patrick’s INVICTO at one year old.
Invicto was bred by Pat Patrick and purchased as a pup by
Pachacamac Kennels of Lima, Peru. Invicto came to Peru in
1993. 1993 would be the starting point of an entire legacy to
come and the year where the history of the sport in this Coun-
try was changed forever. 1993 was the year where the legacy
of this great animal began to be written as the most important
producing stud that ever lived in Peru and South America. This
great animal was responsible for producing countless winners
and producers of winners. There was a time where almost ev-
ery winning dog in this part of the world had Invicto running
through their veins, even though while at the peak of his stud
career the sport in Peru was still at its early stages. It wouldn’t
be fair to judge his production record, considering that only to-
wards the end of the 90’s the sport in Peru began to take off
with several Conventions a year, comparing to the beginning of
the 90’s when Invicto was in his prime and producing bulldogs
after bulldogs, but who rarely got the chance to compete.

I
t is really a shame that so many
great animals did not get the
chance to show themselves in
the lime light. We had monsters off
of Invicto and were not able to match
them due to the minimal amount of
dogmen and Conventions at the time.
How frustrating could be to know
that you have such great animals, but
are not able to do much with them?
This was mostly the case in the early
to late 90’s, ergo the reason I say that
it wouldn’t be fair to judge Invicto’s
production record, considering that
while at his best years of youth and
health, Invicto’s best offsprings were
wasting away at the end of a chain be-
cause of the lack of competition.
The sport in Peru started to move
at a faster pace toward the end of the
90’s with more and more Conventions
a year and each year thereafter. Many
of his sons and daughters began to
win and to show what an amazing
producing stud the old man was. Not
only were his direct offsprings win-
ning, but his grand kids as well.
The name “Invicto” was being
heard not only in Peru, but in several
other Countries in South America.
He was loved by many and hated all
the same. Dogmen knew that if you
were bringing an Invicto dog you were
bringing a bulldog, one who would
stay there all night if needed be. As
such, the name Invicto became the
one to beat, you both loved the blood
and used it, or you hated it and tried
to wreck it.
One of the many things that sepa-
rated this great stud from the rest
was his ability to produce producers.
Not many producing studs are able to
produce offsprings who in turn be-

come good producers and so on. In-
victo was just that, an animal that not
only left many great animals behind,
but one that made sure his bloodline
was carried on into the future and the
path of greatness, by throwing great
producers as well.
If we take a look at some of the
best producers that came directly
off of Pat Patrick’s yard from 1990
through 2009, I can assure you that
you will not find one dog that pro-
duced better than Invicto, or even
come close to him. I’m talking about
real numbers here, not imaginary,
made up in someone’s mind. In point
of fact, Invicto is one of the best pro-
ducers that ever came directly off of
Pat’s yard. Don’t take my word for it,
do your own research and make your
own conclusions.
Let’s take a look at some of the
most important animals that came di-
rectly off of Invicto or bred down from
him. We are not going to list them all,
but the few we are listing here will
help us see the major impact and in-
fluence that Invicto had and currently
has in the South American game dog
world.

This is just a taste of the many

great animals Invicto left behind.
Each one of the animals mentioned
above played an important role within
this family. Some were great per-
formers and some became excel-
lent producers. The real kicker here
would be comparing the ratio be-
tween animals produced, the amount
of shows and the amount of dogmen
in this area, to other studs who came
directly off of Pat’s yard, but who lived
in countries like the USA, which have
a huge amount of shows per year
and a greater amount of dogmen per
capita. Using this criteria will evi-
dently and without a question prove
that Invicto was the most important
producer that came directly off of
Pat’s yard ever, but since in the sport
of gamedogs the “what if” is left out
for dreamers and “wannabees”, then Patrick’s INVICTO - February 2005
we will never know. Real numbers is
what counts and only real numbers
get printed in the history books.

Now, when I talk about the In-

victo’s legacy, this doesn’t mean that
we have reached an ending point and
there is no more, absolutely not. In
fact, the best is yet to come.

Fortunately Invicto continued to

produce up until a very old age, thus
giving us two last litters, one at 13
years old and one at 14 years old.
These litters were; Invicto bred to Pi-
mienta and Invicto bred to Miss Red-
neck. We still have 2 living offsprings
off of the Invicto to Pimienta litter and
3 off of the Invicto to Miss Redneck lit-
ter. They are:

young and at only the beginning stag-
es of their brood careers, but even
though they are, they have already
produced winners in the case of Com-
mander and Olimpia.
Invicto II, Tuffy and Mr. Redneck
are the youngest and have just start-
ed to be bred within the last 2 years.
In the case of Mr. Redneck he hasn’t
even been bred yet.
Knowing this blood like the back
of my hand and considering that I own
the last 3 living sons off of Invicto, I
can say with certainty and with true
authority, that Invicto II is THE heir
and successor of the old man Invicto.
Invicto II possesses all the quali-
ties to be acknowledged and recog-
nized as one of the best sons the old
man Invicto ever produced. Unfortu-
nately, circumstances got in the mid-
dle of Invicto II becoming a contract
winner or even more. We had Invicto
II hooked twice when at his prime and
both times collected forfeits. The first
FF collected was at 4 weeks to show
date and the second time at only 10
days to D day.
We continued to have his weight
open for months after collecting the
last forfeit but we had no takers, until
it was finally decided to retire him.
Many would think this idea to be
crazy, risking one of the last 3 liv-
ing sons of the old man and espe-
cially one of such caliber, but that is
not why Invicto II wasn’t shown. We
knew we had a bulldog, we wanted to
show him, our own believes told us to
show him first before being bred, we
wanted to continued our tradition, but
things just didn’t work out that way
Imperios Knls’s TUFFY and unfortunately Invicto II was re-

tired without being able to prove the
world, what a first class bulldog he
was and still is.
His stud career started a little late
since we never bred to him while he
was on the trail. Only about a year and
a half ago we began to use him in our
breeding program. He was slowly in-
troduced and bred to a couple of our
brood females. We started to notice a
pattern only few months after his first
litters were born; crazy early starters.
As the months went by and were get-
ting older they continued to show that
they “wanted” and were “ready”, so
their wish came true.
We now have several of them in
school and are showing to have and
excel on the same traits that made
this family of bulldogs so successful,
and even though the oldest are only
19 months old, some are almost done
with school and ready to hit the cir-
cuit.
Our profound knowledge of this
family, plus the tangible prove of In-
victo II producing great animals in
only two litters, was enough to con-
vince us into basing our yard on this
great animal and new heir of the In-
victo legacy.
We have since bred almost every
bitch we own to Invicto II, ergo to give
him the well deserved opportunity to
leave his mark in the sporting game
circuit of this part of the world. So far
every single litter Invicto II has pro-
duced has given us the same results;
early starters with incredible prey
drive and intensity. No matter how the
females are bred, he still throws the
same traits to his offprings. We can’t
over look these tremendous qualities
as a producer.
It wouldn’t be right not to mention
Commander as another great bulldog
and son of the old man. Commander
has already produced winners and
there are many more ready to enter
the circuit. We are using Commander
as a catalyst and refreshment to our
already tight but very much competi-
tive family of bulldogs. Commander
has a special place in our breeding
program and we are carefully in-
troducing Commander to key brood
females. We are expecting great re-
sults, results that will be up to par
and beyond the quality of bulldogs
that came from this amazing family.
We thank the editor of this great
magazine for giving us the opportuni-
ty to give the reader a small glimpse
at what this great, but pretty much
unknown family is about.

not a “flavor of the month” bloodline.
We have kept this family tight, right,
but most of all competitive for many
years. We have also kept it away from
peddlers and non active people.
Most would agree that for a good
animal to be successful, depends al-
most entirely in who owns this partic-
ular animal. If they fall in the wrong
hands then the animal is doomed, but
if they fall in the hands of true dog-
men then the sky is the limit. As such,
we will continue with our tradition,
by trying our best to place these ani-
mals with the right dogmen and not
letting our animals fall in the hands
of peddlers, who would ruin our work
and years of dedication, by making
our family a popular “flavor of the
month” bloodline, instead of being
what it’s always been, one of the most
successful families to ever grace the
world of gamedogs.

aving decided upon the
breeding program as has
been briefly outlined, my
next step, of course, was to find and
obtain the necessary bitches with
which to implement it. This is not
an easy task at any time, or in any

must be daughters of certain studs,
their procurement becomes increas-
ingly difficult. Suffice it to say here,
with no other explanation than that it
took me about two years to find and
obtain them, I DID get a daughter of
each of the above three studs. More-
over, in most respects they evidenced
the traits for which their sires were
notable, and for which I had chosen
them to found a strain.
With only the mention of my foun-
dation BITCHES given above, I am
sure I have not sufficiently stressed
their importance. It is a much-used
aphorism that no stable is better
than its mares, and no kennel bet-
ter than its bitches. That, of course,
is true. The most valuable acquisition
a would-be dog breeder can make is
that of a good bitch or bitches. With-
out one or more of these, the tasks

teristics she alone manifests can be
determined only by testing them as
breeders.
Here as an illustration is just one
example of many observed during my
experimental dog breeding days. In a
litter of eight there appeared only one
who was white. Structurally she was
the best of the lot and quite a supe-
rior specimen. Bred a total of seven
times during her lifetime, she herself
never produced a white, nor did any
appear in succeeding generations, at
least not up to the fourth, when I lost
track of them. She either did not car-

ry the genes for white, or the genes
for pigment, which she carried, were
dominant. On the other hand, several
of her sisters did whelp whites.
Bitch’s Background of
Utmost importance
While one of the tenets of all
animal breeding is selectivity, this
does not mean that a superior bitch,
with nothing behind her in sufficient
strength to dominate, can be expect-
ed to produce as well as another who,
although somewhat less perfect in
her own structure, has a family tree
inbred or line bred upon superior
quality.
The sometimes heard statement
that “Like produces like” is far from
being a dependable truism, BOTH are
of importance, the over-all quality
and type of the bitch, as well as her
family tree, but of the two the latter
will be found to have the more influ-
ence both for good and for bad. The
first article in this series explained
why this MUST be true.
It is my desire to get away from the
subject of my personal operations,
in the matter of building a strain, as
quickly as possible. Supplying a re-
cord of all, or of even a few, of the
inter-related matings would be, I fear,
not only somewhat confusing, unless
pedigrees were given for study, but
would also result in book-length ar-
ticles unsuitable for a magazine, and
particularly for one read by fanciers
of all breeds. However, in order to
explain the “how,” it seems neces-
sary to continue with that subject to a
somewhat greater length.
Having obtained the three foun-
dation bitches, each related to the
others through their sires, and with
one having both Pfeffer and Arras
close up in her pedigree, I was ready
to begin breeding operations, ready, I
thought and hoped, to start a breed-
ing program from which would even-
tuate a noteworthy strain of dogs.
Choosing the Males
If it has not already been noted
by my readers, I should call atten-
tion here to the fact that, since my
start was made with bitches sired
by three closely related males, I was
able to dispense with some years of
preliminary matings. Had three unre-
lated sires been chosen, it would have
taken several generations of breeding
before I could have had in my kennel
bitches so closely related in blood as
to make inbreeding and line breed-
ing possible. With two of the foun-
dation males having the same sire
(plus other related blood), and the
third a close-up descendent of the
great German Sieger, U.s. Ch. Utz v.
Haus-Schutting. as were the others,
I was actually STARTING with line
bred animals. (Had either Odin, or his
half-brother Pfeffer, been a bitch, and
one bred to the other, that would have
been inbreeding.)
Therefore one can see how quickly
I was “cooking with gas” or, perhaps
stated mores understandably, doing
planned line breeding, when I bred
either an Odin daughter to Pfeffer, or
the reverse—and I immediately did
both. The results to be anticipated,
as described in my first installment
explaining what can be expected from
inbreeding and line breeding, were
quickly brought forth and plainly vis-
ible. It took only a few generations
until the type I had wanted to estab-
lish and “set” was obtained.

While none of the three males
upon which I started the strain was
perfect in all characteristics (no dog
as yet has ever been), it should be
pointed out that not only were they
quite superior specimens in them-
selves but each compensated the
other in one or more respects. This
being true, when some unwanted or
undesirable trait showed up, com-
pensation could usually be found in
one of the others.
Foundation Blood Intensifies
P.S. Even with regard to let’s say
four generations of game proven but
SCATTER bred dogs the results will
be a very low percentage of prepotent
dogs, if any.
By the early 1950’s”, Lloyd C.
Brackett had become a legend
in his own time. In part because
of his candor when addressing
problems related to the breeding
of canines. All of his methods and
ideas were not new but his ideas
about how to use it attracted at-
tention. Brackett believed in pedi-
gree analysis, litter evaluation,
the use of line and inbreeding and
a record system that was easy to
use. While Brackett is best known
for his emphasis on the use of line
breeding he was not afraid to in-
breed if the situation dictated it.
Brackett understood the value of
using quality dogs that were re-
lated to each other. This approach
allowed him to concentrate the
genes needed to produce desired
traits. His techniques for reduc-
ing error and improving quality
focused on the careful selection of
breeding partners.

magazines and radio as well as through our organizations web-
site. In all instances we will use facts and educational articles
to foster an environment of acceptance in the community.

his fledgling group is devoted
to spreading the truth about
the “vicious breed conspiracy”
pioneered by groups such as PETA
and the HSUS. Started by breed en-
thusiasts, owners and breeders of
the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is di-
rected at spreading truth over the in-
ternet and providing common ground
for all pit bull owners as well as
other breeds targeted by Breed Spe-
cific Legislation. Click here to find out

We are currently registered as a
Nonprofit Corporation with the Wash-
ington Secretary of State. We have
begun proceedings to gain 501(c)3
status with the IRS and hope to ac-
complish this by mid year of 2010.
Any responsible “pit bull” owner
will tell you that all dogs are equal-
ly dangerous and that the owner is
the defining factor. However, many
animal extremist organizations are
using Breed Specific laws and ordi-
nances as a stepping stone towards a
larger goal by convincing people and
media outlets that the specific breed
of a dog is the defining factor in public
safety. We will touch on their larger
goal later, first understand what they
are doing to eliminate this particular
breed.
Animal extremist groups are us-
ing the millions of dollars donated to
them every day, with the intent of sav-
ing animal lives, to eliminate various
dog breeds. At the forefront of this ac-
tion is the American Pit Bull Terrier.
They are pioneering breed bans and
breed specific spay/neuter ordinanc-
es. They are using money to adver-
tise and execute elaborate “pit bull
fighting busts” and to sway voters in
their direction through yellow jour-
nalism. Many innocent families have
been torn apart by this recent turn
of events. Innocent children and par-
ents watch as their beloved pets are
confiscated and killed in towns where
recent breed bans have taken place.
Responsible and law abiding breed-
ers are arrested, their years of hard
work washed away and companions
killed as “evidence” in a circumstan-
tial case against them. Even more
active showing owners are forced to
spay and neuter their breeding stock
or face large fines and even impris-
onment simply because of the breed
they have chosen to love.
American Pit Bull Terrier own-
ers are being treated like criminals.
Many of us are doctors, lawyers, civil
engineers, vet techs, groomers and
many more respectable professions.
However, in the eyes of the laws being
created we are all treated like drug
dealers and gang members. Those
of you who don’t own pit bulls might
not worry now. However, in many ar-
eas German Shepard Dogs, Labrador
Retrievers, Chow Chows, Akitas, Hus-
kies and many more breeds are be-
ing added to the “endangered breed
lists.” Currently, 1/5 of recognized dog
breeds are either banned or regulat-
ed somwhere in the United States. All
it takes is one irresponsible owner to
have their dog attack a child or adult
and for the media to report it and the
Animal Interest groups to use this
as fuel to pioneer more severe laws.
Once they have that tiny bit of fuel
against your breed of choice, they will
start to systematically elimate it. Just
as they are now doing to ours.
The ultimate goal of these “Ani-
mal Interest Groups” is even more
sinister than you might think. They
not only want to either spay/neuter
or kill every animal that they deem
“dangerous.” In truth, they want to
spay/neuter every single companion
animal in this country until eventually
there are no new companion animals
born. Once all the existing companion
animals are dead and no new ones
are being produced, they will have
won. They believe that owning an ani-
mal is “slavery” and cruel. Regard-
less of how much like a member of
your family you treat your pet people
as PETA and HSUS think it is bet-
ter off dead than living as a “slave.”
This information is shocking for most
people. And it is hard to understand.
But, unless you enjoy the thought of
a future with no dogs or cats then you
need to listen now. You need to join
the fight against them. Don’t let them
take away our right to have pets.

LUPITA if you look in the older SDJ’s all our match reports
are there. Last I noticed that Super Kennels’ CH 357 is not
on the ROM list.

turned out to be an extremely game
dog. Billy was matched and won sev-
en conditioned contests against lo-
cal dogmen of the area. Bob used to
smile after impressing you with the
first part of Billy’s story, and would
remark “After Billy’s 7th win I be-
came over-enthused with the old boy.
I matched Billy into what was one of
the toughest pit dogmen I ever faced
with a dog, which was Jim McKen-
zie from Jackson, Tennessee”. After
one hour & four minutes, Bob had
picked up a game but beaten Billy,
with Bob being somewhat puzzled
as to what went wrong. Bob was so
puzzled he rematched the same dog
a few months later! It was a replay of
the first, with Bob picking up a game
scratching dog that had been getting
whipped just a little more convinc-
ingly. Bob then sent Billy to a dogman
in Lousiana, since he lost everything
he owned in the ‘Great Depression’ of
the 1930’s.

The toughest of Bucky’s fights was
his 6th fight against Cranker’s 2xw

cold in the pit at one hour 57 minutes,
in August 1938.

Bob’s Braddock Jr. sired by Ar-

mitage’s (Corvino’s) and by Corvino’s
By Blue, was a favourite of Bob’s

Jr. had won two tough contests. Bob
matched him at catchweights into a
red dog owned by a Detroit detective.
Bob had already seen the big red dog
fight before, and although the red was
a great deal bigger, Bob believed the
red was a rank cur. The match took
place in May 1939 with Braddock
Jr. fighting off the bottom the whole
fight, always in hold against the 12
pound larger dog. The contest had
finally come down to an hour & 37
minutes, when Bob being a bit wor-
ried about Braddock Jr. being down
so long, asked the red dog’s owner if
he would consider a draw. The Detroit
officer agreed almost as soon as the
words came out of Bob’s mouth and
began shaking Bob’s hand very quick
like, as if someone had healed him in-
stantly of cancer. Bob, at this point of
the story would shake his head saying
“ I had thought he had the fight won
several times because of the turning
and running that big red dog was do-
ing, but that big ol boy would scratch
hard every time, when I could get
Braddock Jr. to let him go”
Bob had several other favourite
bulldogs that were exceptional in
ability, one being a spotted, one eyed
dog named Colonel, that Bob ac-
quired from Harry Clark. Colonel won
six conditioned contests, all showing
class, ability along with well tested

gameness. Colonel’s last match
against Paul Sweeny had a very spe-
cial place in Bob’s heart. Paul Sweeny
had fought an unbelievable amount
of dogs without a loss over an 11 or
12 year period. The old Colonel dog,
who was six and a half years old at the
time of the match, ended Mr. Swee-
ny’s long winning streak. The contest
took place near Detroit and the dura-
tion of the contest was a bit over the
hour mark, with a thousand dollars at
stake, which was a fair piece back in
1939. The worst Bob could ever say
about Colonel was that he never sired
a single pup.
Some other dogs that Bob both
bred himself and felt were way above
average were two dogs – a male
named Dusty and a female named
Patsy. Dusty was a red dog with a
black face out of Neblett’s Black Mike,
a son of CH Bucky McCoy & Pierson’s
Dolly, which was out of W.C Roper’s
red nosed dogs. Although Dusty was
never matched, Bob saw to it that he
was tested hard. Dusty produced very
game dogs. Patsy was claimed by Bob
to be the best female he ever owned.
She was a dark brindle female with
a white ring around her neck. Patsy
was sired by Neblett’s Black Bobo,
who was a son of CH Bucky McCoy.
Her dam was Neblett’s Little Cookie,
who was a pure Colby bitch that Bob
bought from John Colby.
When the subject of other dogmen
was brought up in a conversation,
Bob would name Corvino, by far the
best dogman that he knew personally.
There were others who stood out in
Bob’s mind whom he also referred to.
They were Charlie Tyler of Cleveland,
Paul Sweeny of Ohio, Red Howell, Jim
McKenzie of Tennessee, Fred Schro-
eder, Al Cole and Dick Cole.

In late 1946 at the age of 51, Ne-

blett moved from Detroit, Michigan
to Neosho, Missouri. It was there he
purchased some land, set up a busi-
ness and built his kennels. Bob didn’t
do anymore matches for one reason
or another, although he did handle
a dog in a fight once for fun against
a well known dogman from Kansas
City. The fight took place in Missis-
sippi and the duration was a little over
the hour mark. The dog Bob handled
lost, and was owned/conditioned by
Earl Skaggs. Bob felt if he had worked
the dog himself of if the Skaggs dog
was in a little better shape, he would
have won with no problem.

Neblett’s BRADDOCK JR Unlike many men, Bob Neblett

always placed pit bulldogs in his life
as a “hobby”, because “business”
was something you either conducted
or had to take care of, not something
that you loved. A feeling that Bob had
which he voiced with pride was that
he couldn’t own any other breed of
dog and probably would never had
owned a dog if it weren’t for the
game, fighting pit dog. This statement
was true in Bob’s life through his con-
tinuous dedication he showed to the
breed. The evidence of Bob’s dedica-
tion came in the quality of bulldogs
he bred along with the visual purity
of Neblett breeding in pedigrees. Few
men claim to have bred dogs 40 or 50
years can hand you a pedigree with
75% of the dogs in that pedigree hav-
ing the same prefix or their last name
on them. Bob was a man who could!

On June 4th of 1980, early in the

morning while mowing his lawn, Bob
Neblett had a heart attack and passed
on to glory a few hours later at the
age of 85.

Here’s a fine example of what the

pure Neblett strain, crossed over had
produced. Maloney’s CH Strider was
born out west in the yard of Jim Bur-
ton. He was given to a young boy as
a birthday present as a pup. Strider
was aptly named not only for his
running ability, but also for the fact
that ‘The Strider’ (of the Hobbit sto-
ry book) meant the ‘Protector’, and
Strider was just that. He was raised
with children as a loyal house pet.
Strider simply loved Butterfinger
candy bars, and was both treated and
behaved as if he was one of the kids.
Even when it came time to line up due
to misbehaviour, he took his place in
the line with his head bowed as they Neblett’s DUDE McCOY
all received a stern calling down.

As Strider grew into adulthood, he

was left at home more and more often
by the children, because as one small
fry termed it “he can’t hold his tem-
per”. He was adopted by a New Mexi-
can dogman who later traded him to
Don Maloney, under whose direction
he earned his Championship. He was
so loved that there wasn’t a dry eye
evident when Strider peacefully died

pects. The dogs are the same age and
same weight, but mine is able to re-

that his prospect had gotten thrown
around like a rag doll. I explained to
him that his dog did well considering
the circumstances. The circumstanc-

healthy, but he was soft. The dog had
probably never achieved maximum
stress in his whole life. The only other
time that dog had previously “broke a
sweat” was when he got worked up
and barked at his neighbor. I know
the majority of you guys think that
conditioning is only 6-8 weeks of work
preparing for the show, but I am go-
ing to have to disagree. On my yard,
conditioning starts very young. I like
to start laying the foundation for my

There are two types of condition-
ing, mental and physical. Physical
conditioning is when we are trying to
build stamina, speed, strength, and
agility. Mental conditioning is basical-
ly building the foundation for physi-
cal conditioning and developing the
dogs confidence. From the time I get
my pup to the show I put a lot of time,
effort, and thought into him. When I
first pick the pup up I like to bring him
inside to get to know his personality. I
like to develop his attitude by playing
with him and assuring him that he is
now a member of my pack. I like to
talk to my dogs as much as possible
our bait, which is our mental trigger
for the heart to start pumping. At this
age all I am trying to accomplish is to
teach the young guy how much fun it
is to chase and catch the hide. When
he catches the hide I let him work it
for a minute or two. Then I tell him NO
and make him release the hide. When
he lets go, I start all over again. This
teaches him discipline, on my yard I
am the pack leader. The reason we
start with the hide at such a young
age is simply we want to get the dog
used to getting excited when he sees
Mr Hide. Mr Hide equals fun to him,
fun equals work for us. Save the ex-
treme work for when he is in keep, I
can not repeat this enough. Your pup
should not be worked like a fully ma-
ture hound until he is one! To much
and to hard of work at a young age
will cause way more harm than good.

We build off of the flirt pole and
hide exercise to the carpet mill when
our charge is about 7 months old.
Again, we are not trying to condition
the pup physically, only mentally. So
we put him on the mill and see if he
is going to turn the mill on his own.
Some dogs take to the mill naturally
while others require repitition. If he
doesn’t take the mill naturally we
introduce Mr Hide. The dog sees his
good friend Mr Hide and this makes
him excited. We tease him with the
hide until he takes a few steps. If he
doesn’t take right to it, don’t worry
he is just a pup. Take him off and put
him up. You have to understand that
the very idea of being on a mill might
be intimidating for a young pup. It is
a big, noisy, man-made machine that
he is attached into. Plus when he
walks, he doesn’t go anywhere! The
whole idea of walking and not going
anywhere is kind of a lot to process.
So we just keep trying until he gets it.
By the age of 12 months we have
probably put this yearling on the car-
pet mill anywhere from 5-10 times.
At least once a month, no more than
twice a month, depending on how
many times it takes to get him used
to this tool. We use this mill to in-
troduce the pup to the mechanics of
millwork. The slat mill is usually loud
as hell and the free-spinning nature
of it can spook the hell out of a young
pup. The carpet mill turns slowly, qui-
etly, the belt is soft, and it just feels
more stable under his feet. Basically,
we use the carpet mill to build con-
fidence and then we graduate to the
slat mill. After we get the yearling to
work the carpet mill confidently, we
start to put him on the slatmill. Re-
member, we are not conditioning his
body, only his mind. We are not trying
to physically work this young dog, just
getting him familiar with the tools of
his trade. When we are able to get this
little guy to run wide open on the slat
mill we take him off and give him a
treat. Repetition is the key to learn-
ing. If we put the animal on the mill
and he is scared, we just leave him
on and talk to him. Tell him, “come
on boy” while you flirt the cow hide
in his face. Just keep repeating this
once a week until you get the dog to
feel comfortable enough to actually
work. We are trying to achieve a full
stride for no longer than a few min-
utes. When we achieve a good couple
of minutes of wide open running, we
take the pup off the mill and give him
a treat.
Basically we are going through
the process of a keep starting at an
early age so that when it is time for
show season our animal is complete-
ly ready for a good keep. By the time
our prospect is 18 months old he is
already working all of the tools of his
trade. This is the age that I start my
practice keep. After the practice keep
I will have a pretty good idea of my an-
imal’s show weight, how much work
he can handle, and what types of work
he enjoys. After the practice keep is
over I like to travel to conformation
shows to see how well he takes to
traveling. Besides having fun, meet-
ing other bulldog lovers, and seeing
some finely tuned athletes we also
get to practice making weight. After
we win a few ribbons it’s time to hit
the woods and start school.
I know a lot of you guys are think-
ing, “Why put all this time and ef-
fort into a dog that has yet to prove
himself?” Well, I have found that af-
ter putting all of this work into my
hounds that I will make it to the show
9 out of 10 times. I am not going to

get into my schooling practices or ac-
tual keep work, but you should have
an idea of what type of animal you
are feeding before you actually ac-
quire the animal. If I buy or breed a
dog I usually have a pretty good idea
of what he should be capable of when
he grows up by looking at his parents,
grandparents, etc. Not all dogs are
true to pedigree, but a good family of
dogs should consistently produce the
same traits. If the individual has the
genetic potential to be a Champion I
feel as though it is my responsibility
to make sure he earns his title and
his place in the history books. This
program has allowed me to compete
against seasoned dogmen with good
success in my very first few showings.
It has also made the percentage of
dogs that I have raised able to make
it to the show much higher than most
of the guys that I have met. I can hon-
estly say I believe that Champions are
made from the brood pen to the box.
You can’t take a bullshit bred dog and
make him into a Champion, but you
can take a well bred dog and unleash
his full genetic potential.
P.S. This is just a general guide-
line that has worked for me over the
years. Just remember, the whole
idea of this article is to teach our
charge how to work effeciently and
to build a base for a keep while hav-
ing fun!
