Siraj ud Daula fact file

Full name: Mirza Muhammad Siraj ud Daula


Year of birth: 1773
Place of birth: Murshidabad, India
Died: July 2, 1757

Early life: Siraj-ud-Daula was born in 1733 to Zain-ud-Din Ahmed Khan (Mughal aristocrat)
and Amina Begum. He was considered a lucky kid in his family because his maternal
grandfather, Alivardi Khan, was appointed Deputy Governor of Bihar shortly after his birth.
Siraj-ud-Daula was raised at the palace of the Nawabs.

Famous for: Siraj ud-Daula was the last independent Nawab of Bengal. He is famous for his
opposition to the beginning of British rule over India. Under his reign, which lasted from April 9,
1756 to June 23, 1757, Siraj ud-Daula stood his ground against the ‘British East India Company,’
which had begun capturing parts of Bengal.

Facts:
 He was betrayed by his own commander Mir Jaffar who helped British East India
Company to defeat Siraj ud Daula in the famous Battle of Plassey.
 The end of his reign marked the start of the rule of the East India Company over Bengal
and later almost all of the Indian subcontinent.
 His father’s name was Zain ud-Din Ahmed Khan and his mother’s name was Amina
Begum.
 He had three wives named Lutfunnisa Begum, Zaibunnisa Begum, and Umdadunnisa
Begum.
 He died at the age of 23-24 years old.
