PRAYER
Let us all
remember that
we are in the
Most Holy
Presence of God.
In the name of
the Father, and
of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Creator of all
things, true
source of light
and wisdom,
origin of all
beings, graciously
let a ray of your
light penetrate
into the darkness
of my
understanding
Take from me
the double
darkness in
which I have
been born,
an obscurity
of sin and
ignorance.
Give me a
keen
understanding,
a retentive
memory,
and the ability
to grasp things
correctly and
fundamentally.
Grant me the
talent of being
exact in my
explanations
and the ability
to express
myself with
thoroughness
and charm.
Point out the
beginning,
direct the
progress, and
help in the
completion
I ask this
through Christ
our Lord.
Amen.
I will continue
O, my God to do
all my actions
for the love of
you. Amen.
Our Lady of
the Holy
Rosary, pray
for us!
St. John
Baptist De La
Salle,
pray for us!
Live Jesus
in our
hearts,
FOREVER!
In the name of
the Father, and
of the Son, and
of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.
VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
Prepared by: Ms. Kimberly Rose P. Vitobina
Imagine a world where there is no language
– no words, no alphabet to put together,
nothing to represent what we see, hear, feel,
and touch.
1. Semantics
- It is the study of meaning, particularly how
it is interpreted by speakers and listeners.
- It looks at individual words and their various
definitions.
Verbal Communication is Rule-governed
1. Semantics
- Semanticists – people who study semantics
– Are interested in how language and its
meaning change over time.
Verbal Communication is Rule-governed
2. Syntax
- It is the study of the way in which words are
arranged to form phrases and sentences.
Verbal Communication is Rule-governed
2. Syntax
- For Example:
- In the English Language, the usual sentence
pattern would be S-LV-PN (subject- linking
verb- predicate nominative; e.g. Pinky is you
sister.)
Verbal Communication is Rule-governed
2. Syntax
- For Example:
- Syntax changes the meaning of the same
set of words, depending on how the
words are arranged.

2. Syntax
- For Example:
- The declarative statement, ‘Pinky is your
sister,’ when we rearranged into “Is Pinky
your sister?” becomes a question and
acquires a different meaning.
Verbal Communication is Rule-governed
3. Pragmatics
- It is the study of language as it is used in
a social context, including its effect on
the communicators.
Example:
• The word “awesome”, when said it with a big
smile, means the person is excited about a
situation.
