Abstract Title: GENDER ROLES IN PHILIPPINE LITERATURE AND ITS

INFLUENCE TO
GRADE SEVEN STUDENTS
Abstract No: ICEDU 2024 A 476

Abstract
This study identifies the gender roles displayed in the selected Philippine literary materials and its
influence on Grade Seven students from Rizal Technological University school year 2020-2021. The
researchers used mixed methods for gathering and analyzing the data; content analysis for assessing
the presence of gender roles in the materials and a descriptive approach to analyze the collected
pertinent data of this study. The data was gathered through the collected literary materials from the
syllabus of the university and was analyzed by the researchers through the coding system to
categorize the data. A survey questionnaire was used and answered by 83 respondents to collect the
data needed. The following inferences were formulated: male characters showed substantially
visibility than female characters and they were consistently assigned in more active
roles/occupations/tasks. While female characters were frequently assigned with
roles/occupations/tasks that required less power and strength and less knowledge based. Moreover,
the findings indicated that such presentation of gender group character influenced the grade seven
students on how they view gender roles and gender identity. To which, the attribution of the
characteristics and roles done by authors to the characters reflected on the subjects’ responses. Lastly,
based on the responses, the researchers concluded that the gender roles displayed in materials has an
implication to students on their view on gender in terms of work specification, characterization, status,
portrayal, and representation. The researchers recommend that the grade seven English literary
materials shall be revisited. The Department of Education shall require writers and publishing
companies that work for the department to attend seminars and training on gender sensitivity and
inclusivity.
