Note:

1. Also, considerations and reference to the standard /code to which the equipment has
been built has to be given due attention.
2. Related reference standard may also be referred during inspection / test.
3. In addition to requirements stipulated in this document, Project site/ Client specific
requirements are applied and shall be followed all the time.

Over view of the Procedure for Thorough Examination:

Subsequent to client request, the unit has to be thoroughly examined. Apply applicable
codes/standards to evaluate any discontinuities either as Satisfactory OR Unsatisfactory with any
part or function.

1.1 The Documents to be reviewed prior to examination are:

 Previous certificate/Reports of Load test.

 ID No & Safe Working Load clearly marked on the wire rope.
 Manufacturer certificate
 Color Code if applicable

3. EXAMINATION

3.1 Ensure that the rope diameter, construction and Effective Working Length (EWL), agrees
with that stated on the certificate of Test and Thorough Examination. EWL is the length the
bearing points of the terminal fittings, whether soft eye, thimble, shackle, link or other.

3.2 If the rope has reduced in diameter or increased in length, it can be assumed that it has
been stretched due to overload or partial collapse of the inner core. Partial collapse of the
inner core is indicated by lack of spring in the rope.

3.3 Construction of wire rope will be free from broken wires, kinking, bird caging, distortion
etc. refer to section of typical examples of wire rope deterioration for other mechanical
defects which shall be cause for rejection.

3.4 A wire rope sling must be removed from service if any single length (of the complete
length) of ten diameters of the total number of visible broken wires exceeds 5% of the total
number of wires in the rope.

3.5 All parts of the wire rope will; be free of any corrosion, wear as shown by flats on the outer
wires, or lack of lubrication.

3.6 Separate the strands with a specially designed tool (i.e. wire rope clamps) to examine the
inner core for wear, broken wires, corrosion and sufficient lubrication.

3.7 Ensure correct ferrule has been fitted for the diameter of the rope.

3.8 Ferrules must be secure and thimbles/eyes shall fit correctly with no stretch due to possible
overload, twist, cracks or any other possible damage.

3.9 Wire ropes end loops shall not terminate inside the ferrule.

3.10 If fitted, examine master link/quad assembly for wear, corrosion, cracks, etc., and security
of fitting.

4. ACCEPTANCE LEVEL / REJECTION CRITERIA

 Missing or illegible Identification Number or Safe Working Load is not acceptable

 Wire rope sling found Nicks, cuts, gouges etc. shall be rejection
 Wire rope shall allowed 6 randomly distributed broken outer wires in a length of 6d
 Wire rope shall allowed 14 randomly distributed broken outer wires in a length of 30d
 Wire rope reduction 10% of its nominal diameter
 Wire rope should not appear in any distortion (kinking, crushing, core collapse, knotting
etc.)
 Wire rope should not appear in any heat damages (discoloration of the wires, weld spatter
etc.)
 If damage found in ferrule of wire rope sling, that will be rejected
 The minimum length of plain rope between the inside ends of ferrules terminating a sling
leg shall be 20 times of nominal rope diameter for ferrule secured eye slings
 The minimum length of plain rope between the tails of splices shall be at least 15 times the
nominal rope diameter for spliced eye slings

4.1 Usage of High temperature conditions:-

 Wire rope sling having aluminum ferrule secured eyes should not be used at temperature in
o
excess of 150 C .

o
 Sling made from fiber core should not be used at temperature in excess of 100 C.

Such sling which has accidentally been subject to ABOVE temperatures should be withdrawn from service

 Wire rope sling made with hand spliced or steel ferrule secured eyes enables them to used a
o
temperature up to 400 C. However, a reduction in the strength occurs.

INSPECTION FREQUENCY: EVERY (6) MONTHS

The wire rope slings are tested to proof load testing to 2 x SWL.

Reduction in SWL as shown in the table

Temperatures oC Reduction in SWL
UP TO 100 0%
100 TO 200 10%
200 TO 300 25%
300 TO 400 35%
OVER 400 Not recommended
