Will the EKHS Girls’ Soccer Team Win?

When time runs out in a soccer game and the score is tied, the game goes to a
shootout. Each team gets 5 penalty kicks. Whichever team makes the most penalty
kicks wins. If the EKHS girls’ soccer team makes 60% of their penalty kicks, what are the
chances they will win the game?

1. Is this a binomial setting? Explain.

2. Calculate the probability that the team makes exactly 3 shots. Show your work.

3. Calculate the probability that the team makes exactly 4 shots. Show your work.

4. Calculate the probability that the team makes exactly 5 shots. Show your work.

5. The other team is expected to make 2 shots. What is the probability that EKHS wins?

Use the “Binomial Distributions” applet at www.statsmedic.com/applets.

6. How can you use the applet to find the probability that EKHS wins? Find it.

7. Find and interpret the mean of the distribution.

8. Find and interpret the standard deviation of the distribution.

Lesson 6.4 – Analyzing Binomial Random Variables
QuickNotes

Lesson App 6.4 Free lunch?

A local fast-food restaurant is running a “Draw a three, get it free” lunch promotion. After each
customer orders, a touch-screen display shows the message, “Press here to win a free lunch.”
A computer program then simulates one card being drawn at random from a standard deck of
playing cards. If the chosen card is a 3, the customer’s order is free. (Note that the probability of
drawing a 3 from a standard deck of playing cards is 4/52.) Otherwise, the customer must pay
the bill. Suppose that 250 customers place lunch orders on the first day of the promotion. Let X
= the number of people who win a free lunch.

1. Explain why X is a binomial random variable.

One of the customers is surprised when only 10 people win a free lunch. Should the customer
be surprised?

2. Find the probability that 10 or fewer people win a free lunch by chance alone.

3. Based on the actual result of 10 people who win a free lunch and your answer to Question 2,
should the customer be surprised? Explain your reasoning.

4. Calculate and interpret the mean of X.

5. Calculate and interpret the standard deviation of X.
