Review: What other method can we use in converting larger unit to
smaller unit in the measurements of length?
A. Activity Activity: “ Write Me Up!” (Think-Pair-Share strategy)
A. Identify the Constant, Variable, Literal coefficient and Numerical
coefficient of each expression. Write your number in the correct
column.
Expressions Constant Variables Literal Numerical

1.) 2 x 3
2.) 8a 2 + 1
3.) 10m + 5
4.) 25 z 3 -10
5.) 40

x y +11
B. Analysis What does n represents a n ?
What is the difference between constant and variable? Numerical and literal
coefficients?
How do you identify the constant(s), variable(s) and coefficients of an
algebraic expressions?
C. Abstraction The teacher discussed how to Illustrates and Differentiates related
terms in algebra.
In the language of Algebra, the following are important terms to
remember:
n
 a where n is a positive integer
In a n, a is called the base
n is called an exponent
To read, “a raised to n”
If n is positive integer, then a is used as factor n times.
n
a = a x a x a x a… (n times)
 Terms in Mathematical expressions are composed of constants
and variables.
Constant are numbers that have fixed values while variables are
symbols or letters that may take or more than one value.
 Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent in a term
while numerical coefficient is a constant that is multiplied to a
variable. The word coefficient alone refers to numerical
coefficient.
D. Application Cite applications of constant and variables in real life situation?
IV. EVALUATION Direction:
I. Write C if the given is a constant and V it is a variable.
_____1. 18
_____ 2.x
_____ 3. -56
_____ 4. abc
3
_____ 5.
8
II. State whether the following statement is true or false.
1. The coefficient in 50L is 50
2. In 2A + 1, the only numerical coefficient is 1.
3. The literal coefficients of 3 - 4f + 8ℎ2 are f and ℎ2 .
4. The numerical coefficient of 10 is 0.
5. In 3 - 18t, the numerical coefficients are 3 and -18.

V. ASSIGNMENT Match each verbal phrase under Column A to its mathematical phrase
under Column B. Each number corresponds to a letter which will
reveal a quotation if answered correctly. A letter may be used more
than once.

Column A Column B
1. The sum of a number and three A. x+3
2. Four times a certain number decreased by one B. 3+ 4x
3. One Subtracted from decreased by two E. 4 + x
4. A certain number decreased by two I. x +4
5. Four increased by a certain number L. 4x - 1
6. A certain number by increase by three M. x-2
7. Three more than a number N. x-3
8. Twice a number decreased by three P. 3-x
9. A number added to four Q. 2-x
10. The sum of four and a number R.2x - 3
11. The difference of two and a number U. 4x + 3
12. The sum of four times a number and three
