Philosophy of Education in Today's World and Tomorrow's: A View

from 'Down Under'

Philosophy plays a crucial role in an educational institution. According to John Clark

in his paper, Philosophy of Education in Today's World and Tomorrow's: A View from
'Down Under', philosophy influences change in schools, classrooms and policy in an
increasingly global economy. Students learning are affected with what philosophy
their institution is following and how the administrators and educators understand the
philosophy they are implementing hence the importance of learning and
understanding an educational philosophy before applying it in the curriculum. There
are prominent and knowledgeable individuals that could share their knowledge about
the subject matter specially towards young aspiring educators. The only problem
would be that even though many are excelling in the field of educational philosophy,
there is a shortage in terms of young individuals taking the path of mastering the
concept of educational philosophy. There is quite a number of reason for this, one of
them would be that the low quality of teacher graduates unwilling to go for further
studies such as accomplishing master's degree, this is according to the World Bank
in a survey conducted in 2018.

The purpose of philosophy in education is to identify and clarify the beliefs, values,
and understandings of an individual or an institution with respect to education hence
the importance of knowing and fully understanding the philosophy of education you
want to practice (The Scots College, 2019). Being an aspect of education that what
use to be first order source of innovations and delivery of instruction it has now
become second-order conceptual analysis as John Clark stated in this paper. There
are some reasons that had lead to these predicament, some are the lost of contact
with the specific subject wherein educational philosophy have been indoctrinated
and a wide shift in the focus of the subject due to global modernization (Kristlockov,
2018). Educational Philosophy has now shifted to be a field focusing on the
development of the delivery of instruction to being caught up in semantic debates of
which philosophy is better hence the result for professionals in the field to seek for
helpful advice and turn their backs on the discipline (Meridene, 2016). Going back to
the purpose of educational philosophy, another problem arises for most of the
designed models are highly westernized and are hardly localized which leads to the
result that they are not designed to be practiced in particular regions due to different
geographical location that has different priorities and needs. Lack of localization in
the modern educational philosophy leads us back to the lack of individual that are
willing to continue that study and educational philosophy hence John Clark
mentioned that there is a dwindling number of philosophers due to retirees not being
replaced.

In order for educators to deliver quality education, unity among an institution's

governance, management, and teaching. With the promotion of educational
modernization these three concepts that helps in running the school were separated
hence resulting for misunderstandings and chaotic educational institutions. With this
predicament, not having a sound environment in a school could affect the delivery of
instruction which defeats the purpose of giving quality education (Nozick, 1975). Out
of this concern there has been reaffirmation's towards educators values of
democracy. Community, caring, cooperation and justice as the important factors and
principle of education in an increasingly globalized world which mostly consists of
individualism, competition, and ICT control. New and innovative theories with
regards educational philosophy are being introduced in order to improve and localize
the designs of educational philosophy though these efforts are recognized there are
also other factors these modernization attempts for many factors are also being
greatly affected that could hamper the quality of education being delivered by
affected educators.

The questions "Can a sufficiently large and robust community of philosophers of

education be maintained and reproduced to ensue that there are still enough
scholars left to teach and research the subject?" is lurking in the field of educational
philosophy as mentioned by John Clark. In the attempt of the modernization of
educational philosophy there has been an issue on the dwindling numbers of
younger philosophers who can continue the legacy of senior and seasoned
philosophers (Colgan, 2017). It should be recognized that above all the
achievements and great contribution of these philosophers there should also be a
spotlight pointed towards the down-under of this field wherein would it be able to
sustain the longer term remains of older staff as they step-out of the world of
academics and whether they could be replaced by younger philosophers. For now
what we should focus on is where could we fit philosophy of education in todays
world.

At the end of all these discussions, the most important issue that every present
philosopher should focus on if for them to prove that NO PHILOSOPHER IS
INDISPENSABLE and that they should defend that philosophy of education is also
indispensable as John Clark mentioned in this paper. There should be efforts in
promoting the field of education and must also recognize that the role of philosophy
of education in the modern world is to help the learners at a young age of how they
could contribute to their community of the future at the same time promoting the
importance of philosophy of education to attract the younger generation to accept the
challenge of the development and research in this particular field.
