MUSIC
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to do the following with 80% accuracy:
 listen perceptively to music of Southeast Asia
 analyze musical elements of selected songs and instrumental pieces heard and
performed

INTERACTION

This time, we focus on the different music of Southeast Asia, their similarities with
our own music; the basic elements of music and how they express their feelings
towards each other, history, beliefs, and their environment through vocal and
instrumental music in Southeast Asia.

INDONESIAN MUSIC
The traditional music of Indonesian tribes uses percussion
instruments. Percussions instruments are instruments in which the
sound is produced by striking, scraping, or shaking an object.
Like those of the other Asian countries, the musical system of
Indonesia is the product of the different musical styles found
between the music of the Ancient civilizations of Java and those of other native
cultures along the Southeast Asian borders.
Number of songs have been written for school children and the songs are centered
on their lives and on the happenings in villages.

INTERACTION THAILAND
It is a country located in the centre of mainland Southeast Asia. Located wholly
within the tropics,
Thailand encompasses diverse ecosystems,
including the hilly forested areas of the
northern frontier, the fertile rice fields of
the central plains, the broad plateau of the
northeast, and the rugged coasts along the
narrow southern peninsula.

THAILAND MUSIC
Thailand is mostly famous for its sunny beaches and tasty food. But it is indeed a
hidden gem when it comes to the music of Thailand. The musical traditions in
Thailand are very diverse, impressive and worth exploring. Its position much
influences the musical traditions in Thailand in South East Asia.
Like those of the Western musical instruments, Thai instruments are classified
according to a system which is said to be borrowed from India during the ancient
times.

THAILAND CLASSIFICATION
OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
These classification which are according to use are:
1. Piphat Ensemble
2. Mahori Ensemble
3. Khruang Sai Ensemble

Ensemble
-a group of people who perform music together,
or a collection of things intended to be used together

PIPHAT ENSEMBLE
 is made up of persussion and wind instruments, which are played at court
ceremonies and theatrical presentations.

Pinai

is a woodwind instrument which plays the


melody part.

RANAT EK

Is a wooden xylophone which plays the


“principal” part in the music.

Khong wong

Is a circle gong. The musician sits inside the


frame and plays the instruments with a pair
of beater made of cow skin.

TAPHON

Is the rhythm provider drum

Klong That

Is another rhythm provider instrument.

Ching

Is the cymbals and time keeper. It produces fine and


shrill sounds.

1. mahori ENSEMBLE
 Is made up of both the piphat and khruang sai instruments, and
traditionally played by women. Now, it is both played by men or women.
What is common to Thai music and other Southeast Asian is that, their
music is used for dance and theatre forms.

2. KHRUANG SAI ENSEMBLE


 Was mostly composed of stringed instrument to accompany singing,
dancing, and on holidays.

Chakee
Is a zither instrument.

Sao-s aam-saay
Is a fiddle instrument similar to Japanese “shamisen” and
Chinese “san hsien”.

Sao-duang
Is a fiddle instrument.
