Cranes Products
The objective of the following chapters is to give a clear instruction on
• How to select suitable packing cases
• How to transport the Siemens Cranes Products
• How to store the equipment at side
▪ Outside near by the crane
▪ Inside in a storage hall

2.1 Motors

Seizure damage to bearings

If the machine is stored incorrectly there is a risk that the bearings will suffer
damage while out of use. Examples of resulting damage can include scoring and

All motors must be stored in a dry and vibration-free location and be operated in
conformance to motor instructions, see related operating manuals.

Motors with encoders are sensitive to mechanical loads. Protect encoders and
assembly and never use encoder or assembly as step to climb up.

Damage to the roller bearings

If storage conditions are inappropriate there is a risk of bearing seizure damage.
This can result in material damage, such as damage to bearings caused by
CAUTION
vibration.
Read the storage instructions from the manuals.

2.1.1 Gantry Motors

Drain Plugs

Transportation
During ocean transportation all gantry motor drain holes must be closed and all
motors must be covered/sealed for heavy sea transport. Purpose here is to avoid
any moisture ingress during transport.

Installation
After sea transport – arrival at end user’s site –the drain holes must be opened to
allow drainage of any humidity/water which might have entered.

Any accumulation of water inside the motor may cause damage of the motor
windings.

Commissioning and Operation

Old type drain plugs must be removed prior to commissioning/operation at the end
user’s site.
T-drain plug shall be kept inserted, but must be opened prior to operation of the
motor. Removing is not necessary - the T-drain plug can be opened by rotation.
T-drain plugs with felt If the drain plug is under the fan cover the T-drain plug with a
felt must be used. This T-drain plug is open and provided with a felt and therefore it
is not necessary to rotate it.

Longer down time

To protect the motors against water and dust during longer stand-still it is
recommended to re-insert the drain plugs (old type).
In such cases the drain plugs have to be opened regularly as set out in the table
below.

Figure 2-2 down time maintenance

Terminal boxes
Another critical point for the Gantry Motors is the sealing of the terminal box cover
which is often damaged after multiple opening and closing. When the sealing is

damaged, water may enter the terminal box and can cause an earth fault or a short
circuit situation.

Therefore the condition of the sealing should be checked whenever the cover is
removed and replaced if necessary. The picture below shows a new, undamaged
sealing.

Figure 2-3 terminal box sealing

By default the new 1LP/1LG motors for gantry and trolley operation are equipped
with a modified type of terminal boxes for the sizes 180 and 200. For all other sizes
these new terminal boxes need to be ordered as an option. These terminal boxes
are more robust, as can be seen in the picture below.

A correct installation and calculation of the airflow for the transformer must be
according to the manufacturers guidelines, e.g. “GEAFOL Cast-Resin
Transformers: Planning Guidelines” and “GEAFOL Cast-Resin Transformers –
Operating Instructions – Cranes Application”. Without the required airflow for
sufficient cooling, the lifetime of the transformer will be reduced and premature
failure is likely. The following two pictures show examples of a wrong installation
and a correct installation.
Wrong installation – natural airflow is hindered by use of sheet metal housing

Furthermore the fixing of the transformer to the crane construction must be

according to the “GEAFOL Cast-Resin Transformers: Planning Guidelines”. To
avoid noise and vibrations we recommend installing rubber pads to decouple the
transformer from the crane structure as shown in the picture below. See also

An insulation monitoring device must be wired to the PLC for warning and safe
shutdown procedure of the crane.
Since an earthed secondary star point of the transformer would lead to high
voltage stress on the motor windings, an IT configuration including an insulation
monitoring device with correct settings is mandatory for a crane installation.
Please refer to the application note AP05 for the correct settings. We recommend
the device Bender ISO 685 and Bender ISOSCAN EDS 440 to monitor individual
channels, if necessary, as shown in the following picture:

3.3 SINAMICS S120

Risk of failure
There exists a high-risk of failure of power semiconductors due to frequent load
changes in crane application caused by unsuitable combination of drive
CAUTION
parameter setting.
Use Application Note AP 07 for parameter setting.

To avoid frequent IGBT failures caused by fake / look-alike IGBT’s, only original
electronic parts shall be ordered from Siemens regional offices. When new power
blocks or IGBTs are mounted, the type number and other details should be double
checked. Investigations and repairs are only allowed to be carried out by trained
personnel. Please note, that any repair of power blocks has to be executed by
Siemens service personnel only!

The sizing and the configuration of the units must conform to SINAMICS
engineering manual V6.3, chapter 1.12/1.13 and the cranes application note AP07
Power cycling capability of IGBTs. The cranes application notes overrule product
manuals.

3.4 Motors

Problematic voltage drops

A shielded motor cable is necessary to enable the noise current to flow back to
the converter in a defined manner. Using non-shielded motor cables, the noise
CAUTION
current flows in an undefined manner back to the converter, e.g. via the crane’s
steel structure, cable ducts or cabinet frames. The noise current induces a high-
frequency component which may result in problematic voltage drops.

3.4.1 Wiring and Cabling Guidelines

For correct cable installation and wiring, always follow the Siemens application
note “Cabling and Wiring Guidelines for Cranes”:
AP10 Cabling and Wiring guideline

A wrong connection of the cable shield, the usage of wrong cable glands and other
general installation faults may cause frequent interruption of the crane operation.
The following picture shows a wrong installation due to not using clamps to build up
a proper surface for the shield connection.

Figure 3-6shielded connection without clamps

The following pictures show the U-clamp types used to connect the screening
braids of the screened (shielded) cables. These clamps have opposite pressure
sleeves which provide a larger surface area for the screen connection, hence a
better protection against electromagnetic influences. U-clamps made from non-
magnetic materials such as stainless steel (e. g. PUK type K-AC LW) are
recommended for this type of installation.

• Signal cables and power cables must be routed separately (to eliminate
coupled-in noise).
• The minimum clearance shall be 20 cm. If the minimum distance is not
possible then partitions between power cables and signal cables as shown in
following the photo should be provided.
• The partitions must be grounded at several points along their length.

Improved sealing for option K11

Due to multiple opening/closing of the terminal box, the sealing might be damaged.
In this case the sealing has to be replaced by a new one. We recommend to order
and to use the below given terminal covers and drain plugs for outdoor installed
hoist motors.

To avoid water ingress in terminal boxes for N compact motors in crane

applications, an improved sealing of the terminal box cover plate shall be used, see
the below picture. For the typically used terminal box position ‘box above’ (option
K11) on N compact motors (1LL8, 1LL8 and 1PQ8, all frame sizes) the special
design of the sealing avoids water ingress into the terminal box.

New membrane plugs for drain holes

Old installations: Correct maintenance is required with the standard drain plugs to
prevent accumulation of condensation water and/or rain water in motors during
commissioning of N compact motors in crane projects.

New installations: Siemens recommend only to use new membrane drain plug type
for the ease of maintenance.
The advantage of this plug type is no further need for opening and closing the drain
plugs during the service intervals. Possible rain water ingress into the terminal
boxes during commissioning will flow off automatically while the risk for damages to
winding, bearings and other parts is minimized.
The type designation of the new membrane drain plug is “Universal’ Drain ¼” ECD
284+”.For ordering a motor with this new type of drain plug, please send your order
with E-Line information: “with Universal’ Drain ¼” ECD 284+”

Cable glands
For Gantry motors the use of wrong cable glands (see below an example for
protection class IP55/56) lead to water ingress into the terminal box and the motor.
Correctly sized cable glands must be used to ensure full tightening. Furthermore
the cables must enter the terminal box from the bottom side to avoid water ingress.
The following picture shows a correct installation.

3.5 Auxiliaries

To avoid failures of the cameras, do not weld the mounting brackets while the
camera is installed.

CAUTION

3.5.1 Sway Control camera

To avoid failures of the cameras, the housing should be removed from the
mounting bracket, before the mounting bracket is welded. Investigations of
recurring failures of cameras for sway control highlight concerns regarding the
mounting of the camera housing on the crane structure. In all observed faults the
EPROM of the camera was deleted. This may have been caused by welding the
mounting brackets while the camera is already mounted on the brackets.

The following picture shows the condition in which the camera housing is mounted.
Any welding on this assembly is to be avoided.

Instructions
4.1 Software

A back-up of all software and parameters has to be made and systematically

stored at site. This is to enable minimum down-times for a repair or any
replacement of electrical components which might be required.
CAUTION

A regular back-up of the software and parameters has to be made and

systematically stored at site. Beside the SPS, SIMOTION and SINAMICS part, also
software of supplied systems like CMS or black box systems should be taken into
account.
Provision of correct as built parameter sets and installed SW versions support
quick maintenance in case of down time.

4.2 SINAMICS S120 parameters

© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

Do parameter setting of SINAMICS S120 according to Application Note AP07 to

prevent the IGBTs from thermal stress.

CAUTION

The fan delay time (parameter 295) needs to be set to 600 sec to prevent
overheating after load operation.

High magnetizing currents in short time periods lead to a reduction of the IGBT
lifetime, caused by thermal stress. To avoid this issue right from the start the fast
magnetizing (parameter 1401.6 = 0) must be disabled. The purpose is to keep the
magnetizing current as low as possible to increase the lifespan of the IGBT’s.
Therefore the current should be traced and the magnetizing time needs to be
adapted to get a maximum current peak of 70 percent of the nominal current. For
detailed information regarding the correct parameter settings the application note
“AP07 Load Change Semicondustors_en.pdf” should be read.

4.3 Motors

To avoid humidity accumulation in the motors, the motor-heating must be turned

on when the crane is not in operation

4 Commissioning Guidelines and Instructions

4.3.1 Motor temperature settings

Cranes motor have usually insulation of the stator winding according to EN 60034-
1 (IEC 60034-1), utilization to temperature class 155 (F) for a coolant temperature
of up to 40 °C. Recommended temperature settings for warning and switch off are
listed below (all values in °C).

Hoist warning 145 1PH8352-7GC40-2BX0-Z (forced ventilated)

Hoist trip 155

For self-ventilated motors, we recommend lower values for warning and tripping:
Trolley warning 130 (max. 145) 1LL8317-4PC90-Z (self-ventilated)
Trolley trip 145 (max. 155)

Gantry warning 130 (max. 145) 1LP4188-4CA98-Z (self-ventilated)

Gantry trip 145 (max. 155)

4.3.2 Megger/insulation measurement of windings

Precaution to winding temperature sensors.

© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

Cranes motors have usually a temperature sensor type KTY84-130 or Pt1000. The
built-in type is given on the name plate.
When the motor winding insulation is measured by opening the motor terminal box
the following has to be adhered to avoid temperature sensor damage (see below
pictures): It is mandatory to short-circuit the temperature sensor terminals before
connecting any test voltage for insulation measurement.

4 Commissioning Guidelines and Instructions

Minimum value of insulation resistance Ris

The minimum value of the insulation resistance (Ris) of the motor winding is
irrespective of the temperature class of the insulation system. The minimum values
are dependent on the condition of the winding, the operating time and the rated
voltage of the machine.

For machines with rated voltages up to 1 kV the minimum permissible value of

insulation resistance (Ris 25 °C) at a winding temperature of 25 degrees Celsius,
the insulation is given in below table, (winding to earth; for three-phase windings =
three-phases to earth).

4.3.3 Motor heating

Crane motors are normally equipped with anti-condensation heaters (= space

heaters). The number of heaters is dependent on the frame size. For bigger motors
mostly there are two heaters built-in which can be connected in parallel for an 110V
supply or in series connected for 220 – 240 V.

Field observations show that sometimes a 110V heater was connected to a 220-
240V supply. This would destroy the heater. All system integrators, commissioning
engineers and other who connect/test a motor shall check the motor heaters on
right configuration of heater terminals, see below diagrams and pictures
respectively.

4 Commissioning Guidelines and Instructions

4.4 Auxiliaries
4.4.1 Air conditioning

The air flow design in the E-room must provide sufficient and correct cooling. A
wrong configuration of the air conditioning system leads to humidity and
condensation, which is responsible for around 50% of the drive failures.
It is required to adjust the air-conditioning with one setpoint of 30°C (86°F).
The maximum difference in temperature at any point in the E-house should
be ±5°C (±9°F). This setting serves to prevent humidity and condensation in
the E-house.
In case of a crane shut down, external heating/air conditioning must be used to
maintain the E-house temperature in conformance with the equipment (storage)
specifications. All air conditioning systems have to be adjusted to the mentioned
set point to ensure a uniform temperature and a sufficient air flow in the E-house.
