Security information
Siemens provides products and solutions with Industrial Security functions that support the secure
operation of plants, systems, machines and networks.
In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is necessary
to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic, state-of-the-art industrial security concept.
Siemens’ products and solutions constitute one element of such a concept.
Customers are responsible for preventing unauthorized access to their plants, systems, machines
and networks. Such systems, machines and components should only be connected to an
enterprise network or the Internet if and to the extent such a connection is necessary and onl y
when appropriate security measures (e.g. firewalls and/or network segmentation) are in place.
For additional information on industrial security measures that may be implemented, please visit
https://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them more secure.
Siemens strongly recommends that product updates are applied as soon as they are available

2.1 Motors
All motors must be stored in a dry and vibration-free location and be operated in
conformance to motor instructions, see related operating manuals.
Motors with encoders are sensitive to mechanical loads. Protect encoders and
assembly and never use encoder or assembly as step to climb up.
Drain Plugs
Transportation
During ocean transportation all gantry motor drain holes must be closed and all
motors must be covered/sealed for heavy sea transport. Purpose here is to avoid
any moisture ingress during transport.
Installation
After sea transport – arrival at end user’s site –the drain holes must be opened to
allow drainage of any humidity/water which might have entered.
Any accumulation of water inside the motor may cause damage of the motor
windings.
The picture below shows an opened drain at the bottom of a motor to prevent
gathering of water inside the motors.
Terminal boxes
Another critical point for the Gantry Motors is the sealing of the terminal box cover
which is often damaged after multiple opening and closing. When the sealing is
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved
damaged, water may enter the terminal box and can cause an earth fault or a short
circuit situation.
Therefore the condition of the sealing should be checked whenever the cover is
removed and replaced if necessary. The picture below shows a new, undamaged
sealing.
By default the new 1LP/1LG motors for gantry and trolley operation are equipped
with a modified type of terminal boxes for the sizes 180 and 200. For all other sizes
these new terminal boxes need to be ordered as an option. These terminal boxes
are more robust, as can be seen in the picture below.
NOTE The cable connection compartment is accessible from the front. The cable
compartment cover cannot be removed until the cable feeder is earthed
Siemens recommends for any specification of cable types to refer to the respective
chapters in IEC 60204-32.
40°C max. cooling air temperature according to IEC 60076-11/VDE 0532; Heat
losses inevitably occur during operation of transformers. These losses must be
dissipated from the transformer room.
CAUTION
See application note: GEAFOL Cast-Resin Transformers – Operating
Instructions – Cranes Application
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved
A correct installation and calculation of the airflow for the transformer must be
according to the manufacturers guidelines, e.g. “GEAFOL Cast-Resin
Transformers: Planning Guidelines” and “GEAFOL Cast-Resin Transformers –
Operating Instructions – Cranes Application”. Without the required airflow for
sufficient cooling, the lifetime of the transformer will be reduced and premature
failure is likely. The following two pictures show examples of a wrong installation
and a correct installation.
Wrong installation – natural airflow is hindered by use of sheet metal housing
forced ventilation should blow to outside.

Correct installation – housing made of steel grating to allow air exchange. Sufficient
spare between ceiling and top of transformer

An insulation monitoring device must be wired to the PLC for warning and safe
shutdown procedure of the crane.
Since an earthed secondary star point of the transformer would lead to high
voltage stress on the motor windings, an IT configuration including an insulation
monitoring device with correct settings is mandatory for a crane installation.
Please refer to the application note AP05 for the correct settings. We recommend
the device Bender ISO 685 and Bender ISOSCAN EDS 440 to monitor individual
channels, if necessary, as shown in the following picture:
Risk of failure
There exists a high-risk of failure of power semiconductors due to frequent load
changes in crane application caused by unsuitable combination of drive
CAUTION
parameter setting.
Use Application Note AP 07 for parameter setting.
To avoid frequent IGBT failures caused by fake / look-alike IGBT’s, only original
electronic parts shall be ordered from Siemens regional offices. When new power
blocks or IGBTs are mounted, the type number and other details should be double
checked. Investigations and repairs are only allowed to be carried out by trained
personnel. Please note, that any repair of power blocks has to be executed by
Siemens service personnel only!
The sizing and the configuration of the units must conform to SINAMICS
engineering manual V6.3, chapter 1.12/1.13 and the cranes application note AP07
Power cycling capability of IGBTs. The cranes application notes overrule product
manuals.
3.4 Motors
For correct cable installation and wiring, always follow the Siemens application
note “Cabling and Wiring Guidelines for Cranes”:
AP10 Cabling and Wiring guideline
A wrong connection of the cable shield, the usage of wrong cable glands and other
general installation faults may cause frequent interruption of the crane operation.
The following picture shows a wrong installation due to not using clamps to build up
a proper surface for the shield connection.
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved
The following pictures show the U-clamp types used to connect the screening
braids of the screened (shielded) cables. These clamps have opposite pressure
sleeves which provide a larger surface area for the screen connection, hence a
better protection against electromagnetic influences. U-clamps made from non-
magnetic materials such as stainless steel (e. g. PUK type K-AC LW) are
recommended for this type of installation.
Figure 3-7 Connecting power cable shields on strain relief bar in cabine
• Signal cables and power cables must be routed separately (to eliminate
coupled-in noise).
• The minimum clearance shall be 20 cm. If the minimum distance is not
possible then partitions between power cables and signal cables as shown in
following the photo should be provided.
• The partitions must be grounded at several points along their length.
Figure 3-10

Hence each PE cable must be terminated individually in the motor terminal box.
A bad example is given in the picture below. No EMC cable glands are used.
Screens are connected to junction box PE via long “pigtails”
The example below shows how the use of EMC cable glands completely avoids
pigtails of the tinned copper braided shield connecting cable up to the PE terminal
point. As shown at the internal view of the terminal box, the external shield is
properly cut away and the shield is connected to the metal cable gland and to the
housing of the motor terminal box.

In the same way the mounting plate for cable screen contacts has to be isolated
from the cubicle structure and connected with a cable to the main plate to keep the
same potential on all parts.
The next picture shows a wrong installation.

Figure 3-14
At least the cable glands must be tightened without damaging the cables and the
cable must be long enough to enter the gland free of bending stress.
Figure 3-15
New installations: Siemens recommend only to use new membrane drain plug type
for the ease of maintenance.
The advantage of this plug type is no further need for opening and closing the drain
plugs during the service intervals. Possible rain water ingress into the terminal
boxes during commissioning will flow off automatically while the risk for damages to
winding, bearings and other parts is minimized.
The type designation of the new membrane drain plug is “Universal’ Drain ¼” ECD
284+”.For ordering a motor with this new type of drain plug, please send your order
with E-Line information: “with Universal’ Drain ¼” ECD 284+”
Cable glands
For Gantry motors the use of wrong cable glands (see below an example for
protection class IP55/56) lead to water ingress into the terminal box and the motor.
Correctly sized cable glands must be used to ensure full tightening. Furthermore
the cables must enter the terminal box from the bottom side to avoid water ingress.
The following picture shows a correct installation.
The correct overlap of the motor shaft and the coupling is between 0.01 mm and
0.02 mm. However, in praxis cases were observed where the measured overlap
was up to 0.05 mm. Damages caused by too much overlapping are shown at the
following pictures.

3.5 Auxiliaries
To avoid failures of the cameras, do not weld the mounting brackets while the
camera is installed.
CAUTION
To avoid failures of the cameras, the housing should be removed from the
mounting bracket, before the mounting bracket is welded. Investigations of
recurring failures of cameras for sway control highlight concerns regarding the
mounting of the camera housing on the crane structure. In all observed faults the
EPROM of the camera was deleted. This may have been caused by welding the
mounting brackets while the camera is already mounted on the brackets.
The following picture shows the condition in which the camera housing is mounted.
Any welding on this assembly is to be avoided.
CAUTION
The fan delay time (parameter 295) needs to be set to 600 sec to prevent
overheating after load operation.
High magnetizing currents in short time periods lead to a reduction of the IGBT
lifetime, caused by thermal stress. To avoid this issue right from the start the fast
magnetizing (parameter 1401.6 = 0) must be disabled. The purpose is to keep the
magnetizing current as low as possible to increase the lifespan of the IGBT’s.
Therefore the current should be traced and the magnetizing time needs to be
adapted to get a maximum current peak of 70 percent of the nominal current. For
detailed information regarding the correct parameter settings the application note
“AP07 Load Change Semicondustors_en.pdf” should be read.
4.3 Motors
CAUTION
Cranes motor have usually insulation of the stator winding according to EN 60034-
1 (IEC 60034-1), utilization to temperature class 155 (F) for a coolant temperature
of up to 40 °C. Recommended temperature settings for warning and switch off are
listed below (all values in °C).
For self-ventilated motors, we recommend lower values for warning and tripping:
Trolley warning 130 (max. 145) 1LL8317-4PC90-Z (self-ventilated)
Trolley trip 145 (max. 155)
Cranes motors have usually a temperature sensor type KTY84-130 or Pt1000. The
built-in type is given on the name plate.
When the motor winding insulation is measured by opening the motor terminal box
the following has to be adhered to avoid temperature sensor damage (see below
pictures): It is mandatory to short-circuit the temperature sensor terminals before
connecting any test voltage for insulation measurement.

Field observations show that sometimes a 110V heater was connected to a 220-
240V supply. This would destroy the heater. All system integrators, commissioning
engineers and other who connect/test a motor shall check the motor heaters on
right configuration of heater terminals, see below diagrams and pictures
respectively.

The cable shields need to be in conformance with the Siemens “Cabling and Wiring
Guidelines for Cranes” to avoid faults arising from interferences and unwanted
currents in the installation. See also:
AP10 Cabling and Wiring guideline
4.4 Auxiliaries
4.4.1 Air conditioning
The air flow design in the E-room must provide sufficient and correct cooling. A
wrong configuration of the air conditioning system leads to humidity and
condensation, which is responsible for around 50% of the drive failures.
It is required to adjust the air-conditioning with one setpoint of 30°C (86°F).
The maximum difference in temperature at any point in the E-house should
be ±5°C (±9°F). This setting serves to prevent humidity and condensation in
the E-house.
In case of a crane shut down, external heating/air conditioning must be used to
maintain the E-house temperature in conformance with the equipment (storage)
specifications. All air conditioning systems have to be adjusted to the mentioned
set point to ensure a uniform temperature and a sufficient air flow in the E-house.
Qualified personnel only shall be deployed for any works on Siemens Cranes
Products.
