Sound Absorption
Free-Field – condition that occurs when
sound waves are free from the
influence of reflective surfaces.

Reverberant Field – sound field made of

reflected sounds.

The more absorption in a room, the less

the build-up of sound energy in the
reverberant field.

Sound Absorption
The effectiveness of a sound-absorbing
material can be expresses by its
Absorption Coefficient (α).
- the fraction of the incident sound energy that
a material absorbs

α = Ia/Ie
where:
α – sound absorption coefficient
(unitless)
Ia – Intensity absorbed by the material
Ie – Intensity encroaching the material

α = 0 ----------------- no sound energy absorbed

Sound Absorption
α = 1 ----------------- perfect absorption w/ all
incident sound energy absorbed

Total Room Absorption (a)

a = ΣSα

Where
a – total room absorption (in Sabins)
S – surface area (in ft2)
α – sound absorption coefficient

Materials w/ medium to high sound
absorption coefficient (usually ≥ 0.20)
are referred to as sound-absorbing.

Those w/ low absorption coefficient

(usually < 0.20) are referred to as
sound-reflecting.

Absorbers:

1. POROSITY (Fuzz)
2. THICKNESS
3. DENSITY
4. FACINGS (smooth vs. textured,

Sample problem:
A small room of 12 ft. by 10 ft. by 9 ft. high has all
walls and floors finished in exposed concrete.
Ceiling is completely covered with sound-
absorbing spray-on material. Sound absorption
coefficients are 0.02 for concrete and 0.70 for
spray-on material both at 500 Hz.
Find the NR in this room if sound-absorbing panels
are added to 2 adjacent panels with α of 0.85 at
500 Hz.
