● Temperate deciduous

forest is a biome that has

many deciduous trees
which drop their leaves in
the fall.

● The temperate
deciduous forest is a
biome that is always
changing. It has four
distinct seasons: winter,
spring, summer and fall.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe Deserts and Grasslands
Biomes

2. Determine types of plants that

grows in Deserts Grasslands Biomes

DESERT AND GRASSLAND BIOMES
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE
DIFFERENCES OF DESERT
AND GRASSLAND BIOME?
A desert is a barren area
of landscape where little
precipitation occurs and,
consequently, living
conditions are hostile for
plant and animal life.
LOCATION
The desert biome covers about one-fifth
of Earth’s surface. This biome has a layer
of soil that can either be sandy, gravelly,
or stony, depending on the type of
desert.

In North America, there is a desert

extending from Mexico, north to eastern
part of Washington. Huge areas of desert
are also found in South America, Africa,
Asia and Australia.
The largest is the Sahara
Desert, a subtropical
desert in northern Africa. It
covers a surface area of
about 3.5 million square
miles.

Africa—the wind is hot and

dry and rain almost never
falls.
\
Desert plants have special
adaptations for the
conservation of water and for
the completion of their
reproductive cycles. Most have
widespread, shallow roots that
allow them to absorb the
maximum amount of water when
it is available.
GRASSLAND
LOCATION
Grasslands, or prairies, are found
in the interiors of North America,
Asia, South America, and
Africa.

The grasslands of the world

include the
steppes of Russia, the pampas of
South America, the prairies of
North America, and the Savanna of
South
Africa.
Tropical grasslands are
close to the equator and
are hot all year long. The
grasslands in Africa are
called savannas or
veldts and are home to
animals like zebras, lions
and ostriches.
CHARACTERISTICS
● Vegetation structure that is dominated by
grasses.
● Rainfall and soils insufficient to support
significant tree growth
● They occur in both temperate and tropical
climates where rainfall ranges from 25 to 75
centimeters a year.
● The soil of the grassland is often deep and
rich and these areas havebecome the most
productive farmlands of the earth.
