John Deere X Series “H3” Conversion
Outline
This document outlines the required parts and the steps involved to install a second single port
Selective Control Valve (SCV) in order to have independent control of the three point hitch (3PH) and
the mid mount mower (MMM) lift cylinder from the John Deere SCV. It is assumed that the 3PH is
ALREADY installed. It uses the MFWD linkage to raise and lower the MMM/3PH lift arms via the
new SCV.
Note: If your tractor already has a MFWD lever then this procedure will NOT
work for you.
Read over the complete document to familiarize yourself with all that is required and placement of
parts. I’ve included a visual parts view of the hydraulic fittings so that you can see what the part
should look like.
NOTE: The new single port Selective Control Valve (SCV) will be installed underneath the frame in
an upside down position and is located on the right side of the tractor (when sitting on the tractor
seat) and forward of the rear axle. A custom mounting bracket must be made to secure the new SCV
via 2 bolts to the side of the tractor frame.
You WILL be crawling underneath the tractor a lot, so to ease the installation of all parts it would be
advantageous to remove the fender pan and jack up and elevate the front of the tractor and place the
front axle on jack stands. For safety sake, chalk the rear wheels to prevent any movement forward
and aft of the tractor.
Assumptions
1. Holes in the frame for where the SCV bracket mounts are the same for all models of tractors.
2. I “believe” that this H3 conversion “may” work on the following tractors. You will need to verify if this
H3 conversion can be done on your tractor.

Disclaimer
I take absolutely no responsibility for the accurateness of this document as I have not installed any of
the parts listed in the parts list. I am only “guess-estimating” what hardware and length of hoses that
is required from doing my H5 conversion to make this H3 conversion. You can substitute any part or
vender you may wish.
You take full responsible for any ill effects that your tractor may have after installing this H3
conversion. Use at your own risk!

Section 8 - 3PH to SCV Linkage Fabrication
1. Cut off the hex head end of the 8mm bolt (Part 31 of Appendix A).
2. Thread the cut-off 8 mm bolt in to the ball joint so that halve the threads are left showing.
3. Carefully grind off the little tabs that are on the end of the linkage part 26.
4. Drill a 5/64” sized hole close to the end of the linkage that you ground the tabs off.
5. Connect the linkage part 26 of Appendix A into the lever end (part 22) and insert the spring locking
pin (part 27) See Figure 12 for visual reference.
6. While holding the 3PH lever in the middle of its range align both the 8mm bolt and linkage in a
straight line and mark a line on the linkage where the bolt ends.
7. Cut off the end of the linkage where you marked it.
9. Weld the linkage and the cutoff bolt together and paint.
10. Thread on the 8 mm lock nut part 31, then remove and then thread it on backwards all the way to
the end of the thread of the new extended linkage.
Version 1 Page 16
11. Install the other end of the linkage into 3PH lever and adjust as necessary to have the 3PH level
in middle position.
12. When satisfied with its position install the spring locking pin (part 27) and tighten 8mm lock nut
against ball joint as shown in Figure 13.
13. Re-install fuel tank, fender deck and toolbox in reverse order that you removed them at this time.
14. Install 3PH handle base (part 17) and secure with lock nut (part 16).
15. Install cap (part 15) onto 3PH handle base (part 17).
Version 1 Page 17
Section 9 - MMM /3PH Hydraulic Line Removal
To facilitate the installation of the pressure hose installation to the new SCV, the metal hydraulic lines
running back to the MMM/3PH lift cylinder should be removed first.
Note: When removing any hydraulic hose or fitting expect that hydraulic fluid will drip and/or drain
out. Be PREPARED to catch this hydraulic fluid in a container.
1. Remove any hydraulic pressure by moving the John Deere column mounted levers back and forth.
2. Using Appendix D - Lift Cylinder and Hoses as reference, remove the metal hydraulic lines listed
as keys 1 and 12.
Note: Do NOT remove the rubber hydraulic hose extensions that are going to the MMM/3PH lift
cylinder.
3. Remove hydraulic fittings (keys13 and 14) (O-Rings will be part of these fittings.) from the bottom
two ports of the John Deere SCV. If hydraulic fitting (key14) has been replaced with a hydraulic
shutoff valve (key 17) remove it.
4. Spread a little hydraulic fluid around the O-Rings of SAE/ORB Hex Head Plug (part 6) and install
the plugs in the two open John Deere ports to permanently close them off. See Figure 14.
Version 1 Page 18
Section 10 - Pressure Side Hydraulic Hose Installation
The pressure side hydraulic hose to the new SCV will be “tapped” off the back of the existing John
Deere SCV so that BOTH SCVs will be in series with each other.
1. Spread some hydraulic fluid on the O-Ring of the JIC Male x SAE/ORB Male 90° adapter (part 2)
and install in the “P” port of the new SCV. Thread this fitting in almost all the way in with the 90°
pointing toward the front of the tractor. Do not tighten the hex nut of the fitting at this time.
2. Using Appendix E – Oil Cooler as reference, carefully loosen off the hex nut on the end of oil cooler
hydraulic line (Key 9) from the back of the John Deere SCV. It will be the hydraulic line at the top and
closest to the front of the tractor.
Note: The ORB to ORFS adapter (key 13) must NOT be removed from the back side of the JD SCV.
3. Spread some hydraulic fluid on the O-Ring section of 3/8" ORFS Hex Head Plug (part 5) and
thread it on the end of the metal hydraulic line that you just removed. Fully tighten the Hex Head Plug
(part 5).
4. Take the “P” port custom made hydraulic hose (Part 12) and thread it up underneath and through
the tractor. The 45° ORFS connector end will be toward the front of the tractor where John Deere
SCV is and the other straight JIC connector end toward the new SCV.
5. Carefully push or bend up the metal hydraulic line (that you just “plugged” off) just enough to be out
of the way so that you can thread on and tighten the 45° ORFS connector end of the custom
hydraulic hose onto the John Deere SCV. See Figure 15.
Version 1 Page 19
Figure 15 – Pressure Hose Connection to the Rear of John Deere SCV
6. Thread on the straight JIC connector end of the hydraulic hose onto the “P” port hydraulic fitting
that was installed in Step 1 of this section. Tighten hose connection ensuring NOT to rotate the
hydraulic hose when doing so.
7. Finally, tighten hex nut on the “P” port hydraulic fitting to “seat” the O-Ring into the new SCV.
Version 1 Page 20
Section 11 - Tank Return Hydraulic Hose Installation
The tank return hose will be installed by intercepting the hydraulic line from the hydraulic steering unit
and the rubber hydraulic hose going to the oil cooler.
1. Thread in the hose barbs (parts 7 and 9) into the tee (part 8) so that the straight hose barb (part 7)
is in the center of the tee (part 8) and both right angled hose barbs (part 9) are on the ends of the tee
(part 8). All three hose barbs should be pointing in the same direction. Since these are NTP fittings I
would use Teflon tape or thread seal on the threads.
2. Using Appendix E – Oil Cooler as reference, loosen the hose clamp (key 3) and remove the one
end of rubber hydraulic hose (key 8) and hose clamp (key 3) from the metal hydraulic line (key 9).
3. Reroute that hose and connect it (with the hose clamp) to the center hose barb of the tee fitting that
was assembled in step 1 of this section and in doing so, determine the best location for the tee fitting
underneath the tractor.
Note: Do NOT shorten this hose and do not tighten hose clamp at this time.
4. Taking the hydraulic hose (part 10) install one end of it with a hose clamp (part 11) onto the “T” port
hose barb fitting (part 3) on the new SCV. Tighten hose clamp and tighten hex nut to “seat” the O-
Ring on the hose barb fitting (part 3) into the new SCV.
5. Thread the hose through the tractor to the “tee” fitting. Cut to length and install the end of the hose
with a hose clamp (part 11) onto one of the hose barbs of the tee fitting. Do not tighten the hose
clamp at this time.
6. Take the remainder of the hose (part 10) and install it to the metal hose barb fitting of metal oil
cooler line (key 9 of Appendix E) and secure with hose clamp (part 11).
7. Cut to length and install the other end of the hose with hose clamp (part 11) to the remaining hose
barb fitting of the tee.
Version 1 Page 21
Section 12 - MMM /3PH Hydraulic Hose Installation
1. Spread some hydraulic fluid on the O-Ring of ORF to JIC adapters (part 4) and install them fully
into the “A” and ”B” ports of the new SCV.
2. Take custom made hydraulic hose (part 13) and connect the 90° JIC end to the “B” port of the new
SCV and the other ORFC end to the closest end of the MMM /3PH hydraulic hose.
3) Take custom made hydraulic hose (part 14) and connect the 90° JIC end to the “A” port of the new
SCV and the other ORFC end to the other (furthest away) end of the MMM /3PH hydraulic hose.
4) Tighten both 90° JIC hydraulic hose end connections at the SCV first, then the ORFC ends at the
MMM/3PH ensuring not to twist the hydraulic hose when tightening.
Version 1 Page 22
Section 13 - Test and Verification
1. Lower tractor if it has been raised for SCV installation.
3. Start tractor and immediately look underneath for any hydraulic fluid leaks.
5. Incrementally increase the rpm of the tractor’s engine and check for leaks each time until full
throttle is reached.
6. At full throttle, move both the John Deere column mounted levers back and forth. Again check for
any hydraulic leaks underneath the tractor.
7. Pull back on the newly installed 3PH lever. The 3PH/MMM arms should rise up.
If not, then the “A” port and “B” ports hydraulic hose connections are backwards on the new
SCV. Remove them at the SCV and switch the hose connections around. Start tractor and
repeat Step 5. Again check for any leaks.
8. If Step 7 is successful then test out the 3PH/MMM by moving the 3PH lever back and forth. Proper
operation is witnessed by the 3PH/MMM arms are raised when the 3PH lever is pulled back and the
3PH/MMM arms are lowered when the 3PH lever is pushed forward.
9. When satisfied that there are no leaks in the hydraulic system stop tractor and check hydraulic fluid
level. Top up if necessary.
10. Secure any hydraulic lines with tie wraps so that they don’t come in contact with any moving
parts.
