Hyponym and Hypernym
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 85% of the students will be able to:
a. differentiate between hyponyms and hypernyms;
b. construct sentences using hyponyms and hypernyms; and
c. acknowledge the importance of word relationships by creating a poem
using hyponyms and hypernyms.

The teacher will ask the following questions:

How can you differentiate fiction and non-fiction?
Can someone give an example of fiction and non-fiction?
Directions: With your partner, closely examine the provided picture and
work together to identify the words that best describe the photo. You
have a total of 5 minutes to analyze the image and compile your list of
descriptive words.

After completing the activity, the teacher asks the following

• The teacher will discuss the hyponyms and hypernyms and their
differences.
In this lesson, the word relationships hyponym and hypernym are discussed.
Hypernym refers to the general classification under which a hyponym belongs.
For example, the word "animals" is a hypernym. Under the general classification of
animal are cats, dogs, birds, and centipede all of which are hyponyms. The terms
hyponym and hypernym are derived from the ancient Greek words hupo ("hypo"
which means below or lower), huper ("hyper" which means over or beyond), and
onoma ("nym" which means name).
Study the table below that shows other examples of hyponyms and
hypernyms.

Instructions: The teacher will present the list of hypernym-hyponym pairs on the board
and instruct students to study them.
The teacher will ask questions:
Can you identify the hypernyms and hyponyms in each pair? Encircle the
hypernym and underline the hyponym.

hyponyms and hypernyms?
Instructions: The teacher will instruct the students to create five sentences utilizing
hyponyms and hypernyms.
Directions: On your half-sheet of paper, compose five sentences that demonstrate the
use of hyponyms and hypernyms.
IV. Evaluation (15 minutes)
Directions: Working with the same partner as in our previous activity, you will create
a poem that demonstrates the use of hyponyms and hypernyms to convey word
relationships. In your poem, identify and encircle the hyponyms, and underline the
hypernyms. Your poem should comprise four stanzas, and your activity will be
evaluated based on the provided rubric.
