A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

I. LEARNING COMPETENCIES

 Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadrilaterals
(parallelograms, trapezoids, and kites) and triangle similarity.

 Performance Standards
The learner is able to investigate, analyze, and solve problems involving
quadrilaterals (parallelograms, trapezoids, kites) and triangle similarity through
appropriate and accurate representation.
 Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
1. define and illustrate similar triangles;
2. differentiate triangle similarity and triangle congruence; and
3. find the similarity ratio and scale factor of similar triangles.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Introduction to Similar Triangles

B. References: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9

C. Materials: Chalk, LED Television, Laptop, Power Point Presentation,

Instructional Materials, and Badge.

III. LESSON PROPER

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

Class, let us start this day by seeking the

guidance of our Almighty Father through a
prayer.
2. Greetings

Good morning class!

Good morning Ma’am!
Before you take your seats, kindly
arrange your chairs properly and pick up
those pieces of papers under your
chairs.

3. Checking of Attendance
For our attendance, Class secretary do
we have absentees for today?

I’m glad to report that everybody is present

today Ma’am.
Thank you so much!

4. Review of the Past Lesson

What was our previous topic?

Ratio and Proportion
What is Ratio?
Ratio is the comparison between two
quantities of the same units
What is proportion?
Proportion is the equality between two
ratios.
Very Good Class!
Since you have now the knowledge
about Ratio and Proportion, we will now
proceed to the next topic.

5. Motivation

I have prepared a game entitled

“Memory Shape”. In this game the
students will memorize the positions of
the same shapes before the teacher will
hide all of it so that they can match it.
The player who will match the shapes
correctly will receive a badge.
(the students will participate)

Very Good Class! Those students who match it

correctly will receive a badge.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Activity

Before we proceed to our discussion,

let’s have another activity entitled “What
Pair are We"

Mechanics:
1. The teacher will provide an envelope
containing figures.
2. The groups must identify whether the
pair of figures are similar or
congruent figures and why did you
say that they are similar figure or
congruent figure
3. The groups will be given two (2)
minutes to finish the activity.

Is it clear class?
Yes, Ma’am.
Lets start.

(the students will do the activity)

2. Analysis

a. How did you find the activity?

(answer may vary)
b. How can you say that figures are
similar?
A similar figure can be considered similar if
two polygons have :
 Corresponding angles are
congruent and;
 Corresponding sides are
proportional

Correct!
Now, we can proceed to our topic
which is Introduction to Similar
Triangles.

SIMILARITY VS. CONGRUENCE

SIMILAR FIGURES CONGRUENT

FIGURES

 same shape  same shape

 the and same size
corresponding  the
angles are corresponding
congruent angles are
 the congruent
corresponding  the
sides are corresponding
proportional sides are
 denoted by ~ congruent
“is similar to”  denoted by ≅
“ is congruent
to”

SIMILAR TRIANGLES
 same shape
 the corresponding angles are congruent
 the corresponding sides are
proportional
Corresponding Congruent Angles
∠A ≅ ∠P
∠B ≅ ∠Q
∠C ≅ ∠R

Similarity Correspondence: ABC ~ PQR

SIMILARITY RATIO
 it is the simplest form of the ratio of the
lengths of two corresponding sides of
similar triangles.

Similarity Ratio: 𝟑

SCALE FACTOR
 It is the amount of enlargement or
reduction needed to get a similar figure
from the other.
 This is the ratio of the dimension of an
object in its diagonal image to its actual
size.
Notice that when the scale factor is less than 1,
the similar figure is a reduction. When the scale
factor is greater than 1, the scale factor is
enlargement.

Example:
MNL needs to be reduced by a scale factor of
¼. How long is the shortest side of the reduced
image?
1 𝑥

4x = (1)(8)
4x = 8

What can you say about this quotation?

Anyone from the class?
Thank you, this quotation likely refers to
teamwork, for a group to function effectively,
they should have the same goals, and (answer may vary)
understanding. This emphasize the
importance of communication and
competence within a group to achieve
success. It is like our topic, for us to
determine the similarity of a triangle we need
first to identify the things that makes them
the same.

IV. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Kindly study our next topic about applying Triangle Similarity Theorem.
