AIM: to familiarize students with the use of Wh- questions

OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1- Give examples following the rule

2- Build Wh- questions

3- Fill gaps with appropriate question words

4- Ask and answer Wh- questions

PREREQUISITES: Basic vocabulary

TEACHING MATERIALS AND AIDS: board, chalks, duster and grammar books.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEM: Lack of enough words to build correct sentences

SOLUTION: Reformulation of student’s sentences

Warm- up: greeting, date telling and writing (3mns).


Lead-in and lesson announcement (2mns).

STAGE I: Presentation (deductive method) (10mns)

Wh- questions are questions that are formed with question words beginning with WH or H.

1- Who (subject: person)

E.g. Raicha likes mangoes. Who likes mangoes?

2- Where (place)

E.g. The pupils go to Tenkodogo: Where does the pupils go?

3- What (subject/ object)


E.g. The dictionary is full of words: What is full of words.

E.g. We write the lesson: what do we write?

4-Which (choice)

E.g. The teacher congratulates the best pupils: Which students does the teacher
congratulate?

5- How (manner)

E.g. Mary sings well: How does Mary sing?

6- When (moment)

E.g. We will go home at midday: When will we go home?

7- Why ( reason)

E.g. Ali got a good mark because he worked hard. Why did Ali get a good mark?

STAGE II: practice (20mns)

Step 1: Oral individual activity: 5mns

Instruction: Build questions using question words we have learnt.

Step 2: Amendment and feed-back (as students come out with answers).

Step 2: Written individual activity: 5mns.

Instruction: use the appropriate question word to fill in the gaps.

E.g. Sali copies the course: ……does Sali copy?

1- John has a pen: ……has a pen?

2- The teachers are kind: …….are the teachers?

3- My father will go to Koupela tomorrow: ……..will my father go to Koupela?

4- My father will go to Koupela tomorrow: …….will my father go tomorrow?

5- Moussa writes badly: ……does Moussa write?

Step 3: CORRECTION AND EVALUATION (5mns)

Those who succeeded to get everything right will be praised and those who failed in at least
one answer will be encouraged and made to take the correction in their exercise books.

STAGE III: Production (25mns)

Step 1: Group-work: 8mns


With your neighbour (s) of the same desk, ask and answer Wh-questions

Step 2: Findings recording and amendment: 8mns

Step 3: Follow-up activity: 2mns

INSTRUCTION: At home, perform a dialogue between you and your mother about the
importance of English.
